My name is daniel. Im 23. When i was 20 i developed an abscessed tooth and had to get it pulled. I reckon no big deal. Then months later i had 2 more with the same problem and done got them ones pulled. By now ive had 7 teeth pulled, every tooth has decay, and currently fighting a very bad life or death infection. I spent last week in the hospital because that there infection done spread throught my blood, people always say they understand the pain. Now let me tell yall, the pain was so bad my whole head, jaw, ear, neck, and shoulder hurt, i was dizzy and crying and my buddy took me to hospital, i had to stay and be hooked up on I.V antibiotics. A week later now and in 2 weeks from now i go get full dentures. Im completely scared. Only 23 and will have to spend the rest of my life with dentures, i have panic attacks and often cry just thinking about it. And thats not me i dont cry and i dont panic, im just a good ole mountain boy who loves my mountain and nature and always calm. Im not being put under just taking the numbing shots and getting every tooth pulled and leaving with immediate dentures. Im not good with facial pain at all. I cant imagine being in that kinda pain i was in last week. This makes me madder than a wet chicken. I really dont know what im doing here, maybe hoping for advice or comfort. People please let me know what youns gone threw and if it gets better. Sorry for the long post, just venting. Too embarrassed to talk about this with others i know.

Daniel, do you have to get the dentures so soon after the infection?
Yes your so young for dentures but it will be a piece of cake compared to what you've been through.
I was in hospital last year with severe infection that ended up with some of bone on lower gum having to be removed. I know what pain is that is not even on a scale of 1-10. A dentist had removed lower teeth and due some irresponsibility on his part I got a severe infection.
For removal of my upper teeth I only had partial IV sedation which pretty much knocks ya out and waking up is only for seconds and I would be back out again.
I went to a University hospital for all this and after 30 days they started making molds and working on dentures over 2 months while my mouth healed.
I appreciate and am grateful for no pain like I experienced and teeth. Still getting used to dentures and bottom doesn't stay in well yet.
Hang in there and do update us.

Thank you cindy. Well the immediate dentures are temporary for 6 months so my gums can form to the right size for the permanent ones, i was told to leave the immediate ones on often but to also take them off often to let my gums rest, they'll also have some kind of pad i believe to be easy on my gums. My molds have already been made through aspen dental. How long have you had dentures?

Daniel, it won’t be nearly as bad as you think. The infections I had that pushed me to finally go to the dentist were much worse that getting 28 teeth extracted at once. Once those teeth are out, you will enjoy not having to worry about going through those infections and decayed teeth any more. Poof. It all just goes away. There is a ton of upside to doing it. And some downside of course adjusting to dentures. But, many millions have successfully done it before us so it can’t be that bad. The first few days of healing aren’t bad at all either. Advil seems to work fine for most of us for the discomfort. Ice for the swelling. And multiple daily saltwater rinses for the healing. I had bone grafts and implants done at the same time so my mouth was really traumatized. But it wasn’t bad at all. Buy some Ensure drinks because they satisfy your hunger before you can eat and they give you nutrition so you don’t feel weak and wobbly for the first week.

I never really had any bleeding other than the first night when I oozed a little. I had the immediates in as bandages. I work at home so I didn’t have to think about taking off like you do. But if it were me, I would plan on a week off if possible. That would get you through the swelling and getting used to the immediates. Others could advise you better about work I think.

Daniel I know that sound horrible. But it really isn't that bad. I'm 67 and had 20 teeth removed at one time. The surgeon will give you a mouth rinse that will help a lot. I purchased some green alcohol and put it on my face. It got rid of the bruising and soreness. I think you will be fine. Just decided this is something I have to do for myself so I'm going to just get er done !!

Don't let him or her run you off Daniel. I don't think many "trolls" come to a denture blog to make fun of people. LOL. You came here for help and I know this place is a good place to get it. Just ignore that post and seek help here. There are many people with a lot of different stories you could relate to. I hope you stay around and ask for advice and read a lot of the post. It's really not as bad as we make it out to be once it's over. The unknown is always scary and more often than not, we face our fears and wonder what we were so afraid of. LOL. If I can help in any way I will. Good thoughts coming your way.

oh gosh, I could never guess on something like that. I only know that I had seven teeth taken out that were broken off to the gum line and I didn't take anything for pain. I'm on suboxone and can't take pain killers. My mouth was sore but not painful.. Warm salt water rinses really helped my mouth feel better. Everyone's ability to deal with pain is different so you won't know until it happens. I always go with expect the worse and hope for the best. LOL. Whatever you go thru, we're here for you to vent about it. Hang in there.

First let me say slow down and breath Daniel. It won't be nearly as bad as you are building it up to be and not nearly as bad as the pain you just went through.
Although everyone's pain level is different , I myself just had the numbing shots and had 23 extraction done ( I had plenty of infection in the gums that busted through when pulled ) , they will give you antibiotics , to help get rid of it all when pulled . The dentures will be a huge relief to you, and although they will take sometime to get used to. I am 8 months into the process , and received immediates right after the extraction,  but did not have a huge amount of swelling , did have bleeding but it stopped later that same night, and had very little pain . I did not even finish the ibuprofen 800 mg's that they prescribed for me.
Eat a big meal the day before your eday, buy some mothwash with no alcohol in it, and some salt. ( for salt rinses ) , you will be eating soft food at least for a few days . So stock up on eggs, noodles or rice. yogurt,  soup broth whatever soft foods you like .
 Everything will be ok .

Also i cant take nsaids like ibuprofen they are too rough on my stomach so i think im just going to have to deal with what ever pain there is

You might have to take the next day off, but that should be it. The dr. can order something that you can take. I can take Ibuprofen, so that's what my Dr. I have stomach problems also, but I take Prilosec for that.

I was nervous also, but it was fine with just the Novocain.  Just follow the instructions the dentist gives you and it will be okay.  My brother was in his early 20's and had a denture since then.  Although he recently passed away at 76, he carried out his life and found that the denture did not interfere with doing whatever he wants.  As for me, I'm only 2 months since they pulled my teeth and gave me an immediate denture.  I would definitely recommend using Fixodent to keep the denture from rocking which hit on my sore spots.  With the denture secure, I can eat most things now unless they are very hard.   Trust your dentist and enjoy your new smile.

HI Daniel,

You're going to do fine - if you can survive an ordeal like you had with all that infection, these extractions most likely will be a walk in the park for you.  Well, maybe not THAT easy - but I've known a few mountain folk in my time, and it's my experience that they're sturdy.  My money's on you.

My extractions were done Sept. 22nd - all of the teeth I had removed were bad because of infection and gum disease, and I lost a bunch of bone as well.  I do still have my front teeth, but all my molars and premolars are gone.

Still, even with a horrible set of partial dentures that didn't fit me at all, I was eating pretty well by Thanksgiving.  It's almost 6 months exactly now and I've got my permanent partial denture now.  It fits so well and it's so light that I almost don't even notice I'm wearing it.

I'm telling you this because you're going to face quite a stretch where you have these hard plastic things in your mouth that just don't seem like they're ever going to work out right. You're going to think (at least for a minute) that you would have been better off just fighting infections for the rest of your life.  I want you to know that just about everybody goes through that period of time, doubting themselves.

When those thoughts cross your mind, would you please think of this message and hang on?  Just trust the process.  It might take you longer, and it might go by faster for you - but it WILL go by.  You'll get to that place where you're really, truly, genuinely happy that you went through it all.

Keep posting as you go through the journey!

I don't mean anything mean from this but did your teeth problems come because of      using Meth. A lot of younger people right now are in your situation and it comes because of snorting meth, heroin. If so try to stop and most definitely have your teeth taken care of. A friend of my daughter's brother (about your age) just died from his teeth. He was snorting heroin. You can get by this and still have a great life just don't put it off.

Daniel I had my dentures 7 months now. Dentist gave me Vicodin as well and I only took one on first day. If you don't want to take the Vicodin then try taking ibuprofen with an 8 oz glass of milk drink about 1/2 of it take the ibuprofen and drink the rest of the milk. The milk will help coat your stomach so it shouldn't bother you as much. If at all.

As far as work goes I was off for 3 days and back to work. I work retail with Meijer ( if you've never heard of them there like Walmart, only we're much better). The biggest problem I had was learning not to slur my words that only took a few days.

You'll be ok!! As someone who's delt with their share of abscesses, this recovery has been a cake walk. Tomorrow makes 2 weeks out from getting my remaining 9 bottom teeth, 2 top molars and 1 other tooth that lost its crown out. The worst pain was my jaw joint from my mouth being held open.

I'd say the first 2 days after you should rest and just veg out. I know I felt a good bit better after 2 days
