Hi, I just 27 teeth removed and immediate dentures Saturday. I am only 34 years old and thought I was prepared, boy was I wrong. I had watched tons of YouTube videos and everyone seemed fine the next day. Not me. The plan was to be awake but the surgeon refused so I went under. When I woke up I was being wheeled to my car. I got a price of paper with VERY little details on aftercare. Last night I took them out to gargle and the top was fine but the bottom was painful, it took a lot to put it back in place. I woke up in the middle of the night to serious throbbing. It felt like they were in the wrong spot. I took ibuprofen and ice and was eventually able to go back to sleep. I’m sore this morning but I can handle it, I am just petrified to take them out. I really need advise please. Any tips or help. I feel hopeless.

Oboy. So sorry you are going through this. It should get better every day now. Your dentist/surgeon should have given you instructions. Perhaps calling their office might help with your after-care plan. Speaking for myself, I would probably avoid taking them out for another day and then gargle with salt water. The swelling does go down after a while. Ask your dentist's office to be sure. Don't give up....it does get better with a little time.

It's been a few years, I still have some problems with pain now and then. Or I have to re-do the adhesive I use. BUT it's a LOT better than the pain I went thru with bad teeth, infections, fillings, root canals!
You'll hear this a lot and it's true...it gets better with time. Be patient.
There are threads or topics here with advice, experience from folks, on food, adhesives, etc etc
Over time your whole body will be glad, those bad, infected, decaying teeth are gone.

I know your right. It’s been a year since I wore lipstick with color (and I’m a makeup girl). I don’t smile, talk to coworkers or go out in public. I helps to hear from others that they made it through. I just don’t know how to take of them yet. The swelling is crazy.

I'm so sorry. 34 is s young to have to go through this. It truly does get better with time. I'm not sure "better" really describes it, though. I think for me, I just got more used to them. I no longer have pain or swelling, and the more time that passes between the time I had the procedure done and now the more confident I am on how to take care of my denture and mouth. Ask your provider lots of questions. Make a list, if you have to, just to get those questions answered. Good luck!

Hi I know it can become quite discouraging and you will have that from time to time, and it gets frustrating to hear it gets better. But it is all true. Time is your friend, be patient and stay strong. Personally I didn't have to go back to work for 3 weeks ..my dentist recommended trying to keep them out for at least 2 hours a day. I did keep them out up to 4 hours. It does help with the healing, just make sure you rinse with salt water a couple of times a day.. you can do this!!!

I’m afraid to take them out. I did yesterday and it was hard to put the lower back in. I have to go to work tomorrow and I can’t imagine going without teeth. I have heard that if you take them out that they can swell and you may have to wait a week till the swelling goes down to put it back in. True?

I got my extractions and full immediate dentures 10 days ago.
For the first 7 days I only took them out briefly to rinse, no more than 15 minutes or so tops to give my mouth a break from them. Now I am removing them nightly.
One thing I learned was it was easier for me to deal with the discomfort of having them in than the hour or so of pain after putting them back in.
Now it's easy. Some sore spots still but I feel fine. 10 minutes or so in the morning when I put them in of some minor discomfort but then it goes away.
Of course everyone is different in the healing process but it'll get easier in a matter of days.

Thank you for the advice, I feel the same way. It’s easier to keep them in right now. Except the bottom. I’m afraid to take it out at all so I made an appointment today so he can look at it. Your right, it’s getting better but I kind f look like I have buck teeth up top. I’m praying it’s the swelling.

Best advice...
Do the best you can...take them out, take some Advil, apply ice, rinse with salt water, and grin and bear it. You shouldn't swell too bad. Best of luck

I was 30 when I got 17 extractions. I had a bottom partial prior to the full denture. It's hard the first three weeks. Its trying, you're in pain and swollen, you can hardly eat anything at first and soft foods are challenging too. I hated the way i looked at first. I thought I'd instantly be in love with my new smile, I wasn't. I had a lot of moments or days of regret wishing I wouldnt have got it done. I'd already dumped 10k into my mouth prior so it was the only other option.
This community was here for me prior and then directly after. I heard a lot of good stories that helped me through the rough days. Everyone's experience is different, but it's all usually the same outcome -it does get better!-
I'm a year now with my dentures and I can eat anything I want. I'm lucky I don't have to use any adhesives. But I love my smile now and there's no more pain. I do leave my dentures in all the time (even to bed) and I only take them out to clean them. This is my personal opinion but I believe it aided me on getting use to them and I cannot stand to be without my teeth. Some days were absolute hell but I muscled through it. I promise you'll get through this. We're all here for you!

It's going to get better.... I wouldn't start using adhesive until your gums are much more healed. You are going to love your smile. I thought I would never eat Doritos again....You will.

I thought I would be fine with soft foods. What I wouldn’t do for a burger. Not that I could eat one before, I literally had my front teeth glued together. It was a train wreck.

Give it a few weeks and then start with a sloppy joe. I leaned towards any softer or softish foods I could cut and eat with a fork. It really seemed to help. You have to re learn how to bite into foods. It feels odd at first but youll get the hang of it!

i agree with you, as time goes by it will get better, take small bites, I can even eat salad's now ,chips as for the denture glue I call it some people don't use this , be careful not to add to much or it will leak out, also watch out to see you have an allergy to the pollygrip that you use

I'm sorry you're having a hard time. It gets better!
For the few days, I only took mine out to rinse them off and do salt water rinses. They were never out more than 2-3 minutes at a time.
If the ice/cold packs stop helping, try heat. I used wet washcloths that I heated in the microwave and they felt so good on the swelling. Also, try Ibuprofen and extra strength Tylenol. The throbbing can get pretty tough since you're on Day 3 but the combination of those two helped me a lot.
Don't feel hopeless. You will get past this.
