I had19 teeth pulled a week ago and immediate dentures put in. I am in so much pain I can't wear my dentures at all. Is this normal?

Go back to your dentist and get them to adjust.  I had 20 teeth out 6 days ago. That also including grinding down bone and adding some implants for snap-ins 6 months from now.  My face is still swollen some and a lot of bruising.
However, they went to a LOT of work to get my temporary dentures to fit well.
I have discomfort because I am not used to having 2 large pieces of plastic in my mouth. However there is no pain.

No I can't eat with them. But at least I can go out in public and keep them in without agonizing pain.

They were very emphatic.  Whenever you start having problems come and get them adjusted. If they keep rubbing against sore spots it will make a bad situation a lot worse.

True, but as your gums shrink, it's inevitable that you'll have 'sore spots' between adjustments ... I'm guessing that my dentist may give me a soft reline next week, but he told me that in 6 months time, when I get my Hard reline ( may or may not need other soft relines before then) if denture is a good fit, then adhesives shouldn't be needed at all .... early days for me, and it's different for ev'ryone ... so far,so good

Hello, I just had 28 teeth pulled 12 days ago, and for the first 3 days i was in SOOOO MUCH PAIN!!!!! I also couldnt put my dentures in. I left them in for the first 24 hours like i was told but i was in so much pain i had to take them out after 24 hours and i didnt put them back in until day 4. Since day 4 i have been wearing them. I still have a little soreness from the gums still being a little tender but tylenol has taken the edge off. So it has gotten better day by day. My only problem is eating. It is soooo hard to eat, i am having problems even with soft foods. So i basically been eating pudding, soup, broth, applesauce and protein shakes.

What is a Hollywood denture. Thinking maybe I need something done. This is day 2 and getting better learning to speak but feel like maybe this denture is going all the way up to my nose. Getting sore up there. Please help!!!! Thank you for taking the time to post this! You may have saved me a ton of misery. Just want to know what to ask for when I go in tomorrow to have them make some adjustments, wondering if they can make the palate a little shorter and thinner..

I am on day 4. I took my temp out the first night. I have hyper pain and I couldn’t sleep so I took them out. Saw Dentist day 2 and she told me keep them out til Friday (tomorrow) My gums look good but i cannot put my temp back in still because of sore (pain #8) spots (same place both sides top and bottom) Anyone know if they will numb me up and put them back ? if I can’t get them on in the morning. Going w o teeth is awful. Has anyone taken them out the first night and not get them back in??

It does get better......I can honestly say that I understand each and everyone of you!! I had my uppers pulled Dec. 9th.... I was so disgusted, upset with my dentist and myself. I was in tremendous pain and vomiting so much that I could not eat , therefore could not take the pain meds either. I lived on Advil and water for the first 3 days... I felt weak and sick...I hated the way I looked and the decision I had made. I must say that now I am adjusting... I started eating pudding, oatmeal, I got carnation instant breakfast, eggs, and started feeling better. I had kept my immediates in for the first week.... pain, sores and all. I eat mostly fish, pastas, oh and hot dogs (which I would never eat before :-) ) Still no steaks for me but I need partials on the bottoms and do not have those yet, so the only contact is the front 6 teeth.

Hang in there, it will gradually get better.

Its not what I thought either. I thought I would be eating normal in a day or 2. I had 27 teeth or parts removed Dec. 17th. I'm just now getting to eat solid foods. I was disgusted and thought I had jumped the gun. I'm adjusting now and every day gets better.

I've been on a modified diet since early October. On October 8 I had my 5 remaining molars on the right side, and one front lower tooth that was causing me a lot of problems pulled. One week later I had the two remaining molars on the left side pulled, one of which caused a hole to develop from my gums to my sinus and made eating even soft food challenging for several weeks. I had actually just gotten back to where I could eat salad when I had my remaining 15 front teeth pulled and full uppers and lowers inserted on December 18.

I have found that I can eat one meal a day where I really try to chew something. My jaw gets tired (that's the best way to describe it) and I just can't do it anymore. But it gets better daily. I think this is because I was already on a modified diet prior to the final extractions. My jaw needs to get re-accustomed to chewing!

I eat breakfast with my dentures out (either scrambled eggs, pancakes or cottage cheese with fruit cut up very small) and then rinse with salt water and then wait for about an hour before I brush my gums and insert my dentures. Then at work, I eat yogurt and soup or pasta or something else that is fairly soft for lunch. When I get home is when I try to eat something to requires actual chewing. Then soon after I go through the process of removing them. If for some reason I eat something that requires chewing earlier in the day, I find that later in the day chewing is challenging. The weekends are challenging because I tend to cook our family meal for mid afternoon and by the time that is done my jaw is tired. I did have one day where we had a luncheon at work where I attempted to eat a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup and I was able to eat half of it and then we had a get together after work where I ate two meatballs and a piece of cake. By the time I got home I just wanted the dentures out!

I don't have a lot of pain, or actually any pain anymore, just some sensitivity on the left side, which is gradually lessening. It's really just the tired jaw that gets me.

I was told when the process all started that eating things like steak probably was not going to be in my future. I'm ok with that, I've never been much for steak anyway. I just want to be able to eat a good salad (chef's, cobb, chicken ceaser) in public again. I have severe bone loss and even if I could afford them, inserts are not an option, thus the reason steak is probably not going to be an option for me.

I've lost 25 pounds since October, which is ok because I was trying to lose weight anyway!

I think it is sadistic that dentists don't give us appropriate information.
How many were told that it can take up to a year to heal, and that some people can never eat with these things?

Getting 14 teeth pulled tomorrow and am fortunate that my DDS was honest w me and told me it would be an uncomfortable difficult time over the next several weeks. I’m not worried about feeling pain during extractions but hate the idea of pulling my teeth out and the pressure just freaks me out. Doc gave me Valium for anxiety and hydrocodone for pain but hoping Ibuprofen will do the trick. See you all on the other side. Thanks for the info.

I was told it will take 9-12 months for my gums to completely heal and I should wait for my permanent dentures until then, even though I can get then as early as 6 months. I'm 2 weeks in and feel like that is forever away. Not too fond of my temporary dentures and definitely have some regret about my decision.

I think the way they down played the pain involved was the worst part. By the time I made it home after my extractions I was having a down right panic attack and ran straight into the bathroom to take the dentures out. After 15 minutes of crying like a baby I put then back in and left then there for 24 hours. On day 4 the pain was so intense I went back to the dentist in hopes of some relief. They said the dentures caused ulcers to form and that I should leave then out until the does healed a bit but they didn't give me anything for the very intense pain. I went to my primary physician in tears on day 5 and he gave me a prescription for pain medication, which got me through until the pain was more tolerable. I literally couldn't eat or talk for days. I went back a couple days ago and they adjusted my dentures so that they didn't rub as bad and I started trying out adhesives to help stop the movement when I eat and talk and go back Friday for a reline.

Now on day 13 the pain still makes it hard to eat but it is getting a little better everyday. I have high hopes in the end I'll have less regrets.

The very best thing if your body can tolerate it is Tylenol I took 2, two hours later Ibuprofin -I too 2, I maintained this schedule for 5 days. I never felt any pain.  It may take you a bit to get ahead of it, but you will.

Ice.  I got an ice pack for a back injury and I molded it to both sides, but any ice will do the trick I iced for 20 off for 20.

I slept in the recliner for the first 5 or so days, head elevated, iced and took those pills every two hours as my phone timer indicated.  Now I got sleepy so I put the bottles one in front of the other, when I took it it went behind the bottle I didn't take, that way even tired I didn't get confused.

If you can handle Tylenol and ibuprofen that regime works, many will tell you better than any prescriptions they can write you.  The ice helps too.

Best of luck to you.

This is so true.  So many people want narcotics when the very best thing is ibuprofen which is anti-inflammatory pain reliever which does so much better for this situation.  I have chronic pain syndrome and used 800 mg ibuprofen which I prefer 100% for any pain over hydrocodone .  It is by far a better pain relief than anything for most of my pain and I have fractured discs in my back!

The denture thing is a real nightmare. It hard to get use to all the plastic in my mouth. Can't wear the bottom case they are too loose and rub on my gums and make a sore. I go in for a soft reline tomorrow I hope it will help. It been 4 weeks no pain as long as I don't put in the bottom plate. I sure I could eat almost anything but we will see on Friday. I sure wish I would have taken care of my teeth at a young age. good luck to all you new denture wearers it is a real challenge. I'm getting min en-plants as soon as I get my permanent denture. Cant stand the bottom.

Beth & Janet, I totally understand. I am 3 weeks in. Talking to people in this site has helped so much. I am still trying to get used to the "hockey puck" in my mouth. I also talk with a lisp. Except for a few sores, the pain is better. My main problem is eating. I can only eat very soft foods. I have talked to some people that are eating burgers in a month, and others that cannot chew 3 months later. I am trying to follow everyones advice and be patient. You will get thru this. If you ever just want to vent, this is the place to do it. Good luck and hang in there.

You did the right thing Annemarie. I am just 48 hours after 11 extractions and full dentures. Feels not nice. Really can not even eat soft food. My dentists urged me to go for dentures as most my teeth were rotting and bone structure was not going to get better if just left in, I really did not do it for appearance although its kind of a cool side effect, at this point day 4 I'm not smiling much and if I do it sure don't look natural. I kinda feel like the commercial with a dog with dentures in his mouth cept not so cute!

36 hours after 11 tooth extraction and full upper and lower dentures. Thanks everyone. Very helpful to hear from you all. I have had only soup twice since procedure. Can’t even think about eating even soft food. My time table is to now wait 7 months, get 2 implants for lower gums. Wait another 4 months then get 4 upper implants. The specialist’s are now saying with the advancement in implant technology, fewer implants are needed now in 2018 vs 20 years ago. Yes the costs of implants are very high but I am very focused on saving the necessary funds. No, I will not go to Hungary, Poland, Mexico etc for the implant procedure. What with sinus lifts and other work for a successful implant procedure. I will pay more and keep it local. My dentist really does not understand why I want to go implants. He says the dentures look fine. After investigation, I have complete confidence in my decision to go with Implants. Thanks everybody, I have a much better idea what to expect with my new dentures

I have implants.(upper) and wish I had not spent the money. I wish I had spent the money on keeping my own teeth. I have had 1 implant failure (not uncommon) had to have it removed and get home graph. Then, locator on front right has loosened TWICE and fell out! Just paid 257.00 to have it put back in. Also have had whatever the thing in the denture is fall out. THREE times!! You have to get to rings placed about every 6 months. It is nice to not use adhesives...but they don't stay tight indefinitely. And I went to a dentist who specializes in implants.

I had 16 teeth extracted on the 17th. My immediate denture feels huge in my mouth. I’ve gone back 3 times for sore spots and still have a hard time wearing the denture! The pain is still there but I’ve found that ibuprofen helps much better than the prescription they gave me! I go back to work tomorrow and I’m on the phone all day so I’m hoping it goes okay. I’m still very sore and hardly able to eat soft foods. It’s very discouraging and I’m praying this gets better.

I had 16 teeth extracted and immediates put in March 21st 2018. The top seem to be heading on a normal pattern but the bottoms are painful.  The teeth holes do not hurt but the sores on the front and back of my lower gums are constantly irritated by the bottom denture.  I ordered some Benzodent and hope that helps.

Did you take 3 weeks out of work. I am facing getting the last 10 top teeth peulled all at once. I am trying to figure out how much leave time to put in for from my work, I am a mental health RN full time. See people in person daily - lots of phone work too especially with insurance Companies. I am so scared of this whole procedure - I go tomorrow 4/10/18 for my final impressions for top denture and they said in approx. 4 months they will fit me for a partial lower (in back) as I cannot afford implants to hold the upper denture in place (nor due I want to). I am a result of very bad dental work - I paid $ 27,000 for crowns in my upper jaw - only to be done - redone - fall over and over again and for what - FALSE teeth, My stomach has been in knots. I just want to get this done - so afraid of the pain and not getting relief, but mostly that no one out here will understand what I am going to  be going through.

I am a nurse also.  I had 26 teeth pulled on 3/17/18 and had requested 3 weeks off.  I extended it to 4 weeks and just went back on Monday.  I called the dentist that day to get in for another adjustment (my 7th!) and have to wait 2 weeks to get in.  I got full upper and lower dentures.  The top still make my lip push out when I smile and I have no suction on it so I have to use a ton of adhesive to keep it in place.  The lower is terrible!  I've had the lower adjusted over and over again and it still pushes into the back of my jaw on the left and I have to use so much adhesive(I use Fixodent Ultra and Fixodent powder at the same time) that It pushes out into my mouth. I can't eat anything 'solid'.  I eat a lot of eggs, pudding, etc.  I'm going back on 5/2 and I told them that if they can't do something about this I am requesting a new lower.  I still have a problem saying my S's but, other than that, I'm speaking pretty well.

I am in my 6 th week post extraction and denture placement. Good you have gone back for adjustments. With my extractions, 2 teeth did not want to come out. So my dentist cut into my gums to loosen them. These took around a month to heal to the point of no pain. You did the right thing, no question about that. This is a year process and obviously time immediately after extraction and dentures placement are the toughest.

I had 26 teeth that had broken down to the gums so they were surgically cut out and needed 32 shots of novacain and 64 stitches. This was done March 14, 2018 and I was never offered an immediate denture they just told me to come back in 6 months to start the process on my dentures. I had 1 day of pain but took only ibuprofen and did ok. I cant see how Im going to make it 5 more months with a diet of only soft foods!!

I am 9 weeks and for having 13 extractions and 6 bone grafts 3 on top 3 on the bottom and immediate Dentures put in top and bottom the problem I'm having right now and I've already been in once to have him adjust the Dentures is the while my top plays in perfectly my bottom slips and slides and floats and comes out of the most inappropriate time I have to use a lot of adhesive which lasts for just a few hours and then my dentures will literally flop out on the bottom, there can be very embarrassing out in public. I don't see my dentist again until July 12th when which time they will take my immediate Dentures Sun back to the lab and give me my permanent Dentures but this slipping and sliding of the bottom is driving me absolutely crazy and the taste of this awful as he's there and I've tried everyone it's just not something that I don't know if I can do for another month and a half month. I keep my dentures very clean I take them out at night although usually my bottom denture is out before afternoon I cannot eat solid food I cannot chew I have to take my bottom Dentures out if I want to eat anything which is usually soft food I can't even bite into a burger. Well I love the way they look and how nice my smile is again this issue with the bottom Dentures is driving me crazy

I’m 38 years old and I’m just 48 hours after having 19 extractions, full upper and lower immediate dentures with 4 full-sized lower implants put into place that will secure my permanent lower denture once the implants are healed and secured. I was hesitant to spend the money for the lower implants, but I can already tell that it will absolutely be worth it! I would have to wait for upper implants if I wanted them due to bone issues, but now I don’t think I’ll even need them because I have no problems with my upper set. In fact, I can hardly get it out and this is just my immediate set, without using any adhesives or any adjustments. But, I have to say that if there is any way you or anyone else getting dentures can afford to get the lower implants, do not hesitate. It certainly did not cause any additional pain and, even though it’s only 2 days since my D-Day, I can already tell that I’ll be able to eat anything once my lower dentures are secured.

I just wish it didn’t take so long for the implants to be healed/secured and ready to attach (or whatever terminology is used). I was hoping that I might have my secured, permanent dentures within 4 months or so, but apparently with the full-sized implants, my dentist prefers to wait 9-12 months just to be on the safe side. I suppose I’d rather wait a few extra months and have my implants be successful versus rushing it and having them fail. But, it does seem like such a long wait at this point.

P.s. I’m a lawyer and have a custody hearing in just a few days., which means I’ll be talking a lot in court that day. I’m wondering if it would be better to leave my lower set out that day. Has anyone done that and is it really noticeable that you don’t have any teeth on the bottom? Unfortunately, I cannot move this hearing, so I have to figure out something...

Hi Marie,
I just saw your post. How did the custody hearing go? Did you leave them out? I think most people who don't have dental issues themselves, don't focus on other people's teeth like we do. But I also always wondered if people noticed my missing teeth right away and so I didn't speak much no more in public....... I know that's not an option for you. I hope your hearing went well and hang in there, you're almost there.

Just a little info...I spent 5000 about seven years ago on a top and bottom partial with immediate and then permanent. Seven years later, my bracket teeth were broken and looked awful. Two days ago had my final five teeth on top out and had a full plate put in on top. Added two teeth and moved my brackets v for my bottom partial. Never needed pain meds. Just Motrin, never filled the RX. Today on day two, I had to go in cause the to plate was digging into my face above my gums and under my nose and I could barely talk or move my top lip. I knew if I waited like that I would get sores. I walked into to dentist office and five minutes later, instant relief and no more lip sticking out. My whole body relaxed. This dentist was amazing and only 1/3 of the cost. 27.00 per extraction. 276.00 for my immediate denture. If I want another in a year it will be 276.00. total cost a little over 500 bucks. I'm talking and eating. May I suggest chicken salad wraps from Publix because they are soft and delicious and more filling than soup and ice cream. I'm so pleased with the dentist and the office. There cost alone was so unreal compared to most and was done all in one day. Arrived in am for consultation, made impressions, had was try in, broke for lunch, went back head teeth pulled and put in top plate and partial on bottom. The result. Awesome, after going back to have some taken off around the top by my nose, cause it was killing me. Thinking I'll have it thinned and a little off the back next time I go. Adjustment was absolutely free in and out in five minutes and lots of kindness and encouragement from dentist and staff... Dixie Land dental is amazing. I live in GA. Drove one hour and fifteen minutes. So very worth it. People drive from all over. Wish I had heard of this years ago when I threw down five Grand. I will attach a picture. No make up but I'm smiling on day two after extractions and placement. One adjustment and have to go back to work tomorrow as a waitress. Hope I'm not dread after all the talking. Prayers please. I don't work for Dixieland. I just wish someone had told me, so I'm trying to spread some knowledge of another option. Prayers to you all. Keep your chin up and teeth in. Lol. Keep smiling!!! Just yelled uploading but I can't. It's a terrible pic, but I'll make it my profile.

Hey beautiful lady? Have been thinking about you, wondering how you are feeling and how you are adjusting. Sounds like your dentist is an absolute dream. So very happy for you. I've been praying for you to feel great, heal quickly, and love your beautiful smile! Things are awesome here. I have to use adhesive but it lasts over 24 hours and it's similar like having my own teeth, but they look so much better!!!! Going to the dentist to have one filling on a bottom front tooth near where my bottom partial clasp tooth is. Can't wait. My dentist said once that is done, my smile will be absolutely perfect! That's encouraging because I've never had anything close to a great smile. Lol

Hi Julie, thanks for your kind thoughts ... so far, only needed one adjustment for a mildly sore spot, they still feel strange in my mouth but it's early days and I'm sure that I'll get used to them ( eventually) No problems o'wise, they fit really well and altho'  I can't manage a steak, I'm able to eat decent food again, go back to dentist on 9th July for second review, not sure if I need a soft reline yet, wait and see
I also need a filling and one extraction on bottom but waiting until tops are stable, then I'm done:)
So glad that you are doing well too, you and others on this forum have helped me immensely by providing encouragement and helpful info ...
 Keep smilin"

Hi just had 5 extractions on top. Got some stitches and a temporary denture put in. Was put on a 48 hr. special diet: broth, mashed potatoes, jello, whipped cream, ice cream, yogurt for two days! Third day may rinse with salt water. Then go back in one week! Other than this have some pain iced and used advil and Tylenol. I will let you know how I make out in coming week. Good Luck everybody. And thank you for reading this.
