So I have to get partials for the top and bottom. I am now struggling with severe depression and was perscribed anitdepressant. I am scared beyond belief. Is there anyone willing to talk to me about partial dentures and what to expect. I really don't know how to do this and want to continue with life. I am beyond sick over this. The anxiety has had me up for 4 days straight and have been shaking like a leaf. I am afraid to have a nervous breakdwon and loose all that is good in my life. I am desperate to talk to somebody, nobody I know has dentures. I am 42 and had quite a few extractions this year due to failing root canals, basically all my molars are going. Please someone???

My dearest Butterfly29 your world has not ended many people even younger than u has had teeth extracted for various
reasons. Think of those that are in their early 20's and 30's
Butterfly29 its no big deal and nothing to be ashamed of and
nothing to get so depressed over. I'm in my 50's and I also
had to get partials for up and down and to be honest I have
to thank God because several was causing me great pain.
And now I'm pain free, you'll see Butterfly29 and u will be
very happy w/ your partials. I uses Fixodent to help keep
the food particles from getting under them and to help keep them tight fitting.
Use a few small dots or a continues very thin line of Fixodent around the partials that's going to be next to your gums.
Make sure your partials are clean first u can use Fixodent
cleaning tablets or any of your choice. When u're ready
to put partials in dry them and always put the top one in
first and hold it for a few seconds w/your thumbs on both sides of the partials and then do the bottoms.
Fixodent comes in a cream or powder form, I like the cream
my personal choice, just don't over use either one, if u apply it
right u will only have to use the adhesive once a day.
Butterfly I hope this will help u through I will check back later to see how u're doing.
And by the way if u decide to use Fixodent cream they have this small .35oz. tube of the cream that u can carry in your pocket or purse and u can be so discreet w/it in public if u
ever need to use a little more.
But it has been discontinued by Procter & Gamble and u
won't be able to find it in any store any longer but u can
find it on Ebay.com and Amazon.com for now until their
supply run out. Ebay prices is better and u may be able to get free shipping as well, u should not pay no more than $6.00
for a 3pk. of Fixodent To Go it will be worth having it to carry in your pocket and purse for emergencies.
Butterfly29 I hope that I was able to help u, but once again
there is nothing to be afraid of life goes on and u will be
happy. Also start using Crest Pro Health I believe in it and
I'm doing all I can do to save the rest of my natural teeth and
keep your dental appointments too.
Love u Butterfly29 and Have a Blessed ,Healthy, and Happy
New Year!

How long did it take to get used to them? Do they feel normal? Can you and talk confortably with them? I am in a very bad place with this mentally. Some days I feel as if I can't go on . Sixk over it 24/7. Can't sleep etc. Your post was helpful.

I know i am late to this discussion, but i am just 36 and had all my top teeth pulled just yesterday. I am so upset right now and don't know how to face the world on Monday. I.at least have a very supportive roommate. I am going through something at least similar to you. Wish you the best.

I'm glad you found the DentureLiving forum, Andy. People wear dentures at all ages and for all different reasons, but I understand how much of an adjustment this must be. It's great to surround yourself with supportive people when learning to wear dentures, and I'm sure you'll do just fine.

Since it's been a few days since you got your teeth extracted, how are you feeling? Are you eating okay or in any pain? We have a calendar that shows what you can expect during your first month with dentures, so we hope this will help a bit: http://www.dentureliving.com/new-to-dentures/calendar

Hang in there and keep us posted on how you're doing!

Dearest Butterfly29, speaking for myself it bother me when my
dentist first told me that my five bottom teeth in the front had to be extracted due to bone loss. But when she told me she could have a partial made for me and that I could still eat and smile and be myself I was all for it because with the bone loss
I was having a lot of problems when eating.
So I went with the extractions and I must say I'm glad I did, I
hate the fact that I lost my natural teeth but let's face it no
matter how much u care for your teeth thing can and will
happen that's just a part of living.
Your problem could have begin when u were just a young child
but progress as u became older. Butterfly29 there is no need for u to be sick over losing some teeth even if u may have to have all of them extracted later it still won't be a big deal. U can then have implants or full dentures and still live a complete and happy life. There are millions and millions of people all over the world young and old Butterfly29 that wears partials or dentures u and I are not the only ones believe me.
My top four teeth was extracted when I was in my middle thirties and I didn't even have partial at that time I got partials for upper and lower in 2012. My dentist asked why I never had a partial made for the top, I told her no reason I just didn't. It didn't prevent me from eating or anything so I didn't get partials at the top until the bottoms was extracted and she told me that she will have partials for both top and bottoms made I said ok. Back to your ?'s above it did not take me long at all to
get use to them maybe about a month or so and I feel that they are my real teeth I can eat anything with them, of course u don't want to chomp down on peanut brittles, ice cubes, or
anything that may cause the partials damage its just common
sense. I feel very normal when wearing my partials too and I have no trouble whatsoever when talking, laughing etc;. When
I know I'm going out for dinner I will use a little Fixodent to not just hold them in but to keep food particles from getting in between them. U may or may not want to use Fixodent u may
want to use another type of denture adhesive but get the Fixodent w/o zinc. Fixodent is my choice because I
only use it when going out to dinner, if I'm at home I don't use
it because I don't usually have my partials in no way and I can still eat w/o my partials. If u want to have some Fixodent to keep in your pocket or purse like I told u before go to Ebay.com and order u some of the smaller tubes its called
Fixodent To Go Food Seal and the tubes are .35oz. and
very convenient and u can be discreet when using in public if u
need to. Butterfly29 I must tell u if u really feel that u cannot go on get on your knees and pray u will feel a 100% better and u may even need to talk to your pastor or a doctor, or maybe
even your dentist.
But don't dwell on this minute issue it is not bad at all, its
only how bad u make it Butterfly29,so let go and let God
He has you in His loving arms.
I love u Butterfly29 and please keep on living a good healthy
and happy life u're only 42yrs.old u have a long life ahead of u.
Everything that happens in our lives good or bad is part of living, things can't always be perfect all of the time but u must remain strong and roll w/the punches and u must defeat satan at all times stomp him under your feet and tell him your soul he will not get!

Lots of words of wisdom from Diane. Butterfly29, please don't let this issue with your teeth get you so down. I had all of my teeth pulled yesterday ~ I was so scared, but it went fine. I am a little sore, but I am so happy I went through with it. You will be ok, trust me. I am only 48 and I understand your anxiety over this. Pray and try to stay positive ~ I promise it will be ok.

Thank you both for writing to me. I am scared too.... Everything I read here is how awful partials are and how they leave sore spots, denture adhesive tastes yucky. and how people can't get used to them....Diane you are extremely helpful with your positive outlook. I am just not there yet. I don't know why this is devastating me so badly. Most days I get home from work and just cry for hours.

Fear really gets the best of a person. I am hoping to somehow find my way back to my old self....I was outgoing fun and always happy. I don't even recognize myself. I barely drag myself out of bed everyday, and its only for work, because I need to pay my bills, but that is all I can muster to do. Thank you both for writing me..

Hi Butterfly29 ~ not trying to be nosy or anything ~ but I have been thinking about your posts all evening and I can't help but wonder if there are other things in your life that are maybe not going well and with the extra stress of your dental issues is making you feel overwelmed?? Depression is a very serious issue ~ especially if it goes on for a while. Do you have any close friends or family members that you can talk to?? Or if you go to church, maybe a pastor or someone else that you trust?? I had a pretty serious bout of depression about four years ago. I had to take meds for a while and with alot of prayers and talking with a counselor, I got thru it ok.

I would be more than happy to chat with you if you need someone to talk to. Just a little info about me: I am 48, married for 25 years, one daughter, 21 ~ she just moved out on her own and I have been kind of down about that ~ I miss her!! Life sucks sometimes!! But things always get better with time. God can help you with anything and everything!!!! If you want to talk about anything, let me know. I am praying for you. Tammy

Praise the Lord Butterfly29, I see u have another wonderful person to help u feel better about your minute issue, Hi Tammy u are a sweetheart.
Butterfly29 is there something else that's troubling u beside
having a few teeth extracted? Do u care to share it w/ Tammy
and I so we can try and help u the best that we can.
Are u alone Butterfly29 please let us know, do u believe in
God and prayers.
Butterfly29 u said u have always been a happy and out going person don't stop now, u're allowing satan get u down like that don't allow that to happen, call Jesus name out loudly @ all times and all day long He's listening and waiting for your calls Butterfly29,I pray that u are a believer.
What is your most sincere worst feeling about having
a few extractions done and having to wear partials, I really
don't know if u're telling Tammy and I all of it.
Tammy had all of her teeth extracted and its no big deal
w/her and I had nine extracted and its no big deal to me.
Butterfly29 for God sake and in the name of Jesus Christ
stop torturing yourself, stop it now, I believe u are a beautiful
person, what are u doing to u.
Some people may have issues w/their partials Butterfly29
but it doesn't mean u will. Tell u what Butterfly29 do not read
anymore negative post stay right hear w/Tammy and I, OK.
Butterfly29 do this for yourself use your Fixodent on your partials and get all dressed up nicely and take yourself out
for a nice dinner, I do it all the time and see how much u will love yourself and your new partials.
Life is so very short Butterfly29 so live it to the fullest we're only
here for a very shot time,so just be glad that u were even able to go to a dentist first of all and afford partials.U may not realize how many folks would love to be able to go to a dentist and get partials/dentures but cannot afford either and they are in so much pain and agony and cannot eat or sleep, but u are truly blessed and u need to realize that Butterfly29.
As far as the taste of the adhesive its does not taste bad but
u don't eat it anyway(hahaha) u may get a little of it in your mouth but use warm water and a toothbrush to get rid of it.
U may experience a little soreness but that's because your mouth is adjusting but of course if it continues see your dentist the partials may need a little tweeking like mines did and I was
just fine and have been ever since 2012.
One other thing I would like for u to do for Butterfly29 and that is to look @ yourself in the mirror and say how beautiful or how handsome I am and mean it, do it everyday when u're
getting ready to go to work or going to bed @ nite.
Tammy and I love and care for u Butterfly29 so u need to love and care for yourself! And claim your happy life back now.

Butterfly29,

Hi!! So glad to hear from you ~ thank you for the sweet comment. It is kinda strange to me for someone to say that they hope to be more like me!! I am not used to that!! So ~ thanx again!!

You seem like a very articulate, smart young lady. Alot of people would not address their issues like you are with going to therapy. I will be praying for you ~ I hope you have a great therapist with whom you can be honest with and who can give you great advice. Sometimes just talking with someone who can be objective can help alot.

I just know you can do this!! I think that you are stronger than you give yourself credit for. Please keep in touch ~ I truly care about you and how you are doing.

Love and God Bless, Tammy

Hi Butterfly29 ~ I hope u are ok ~ wanted you to now that I am not trying to minimize your anxiety. I almost changed my mind a couple of times!! I have cried many tears over having to get dentures. We can't afford dental insurance, so I have been on a waiting list for a program called Dental Options ~ it has a large group of dentists in Ohio who help people. It isn't free, but they give you a discount. So what would have cost $2,500 ~ cost us $1,250. The waiting list was 1-1/2 years long. So I have had a long time to stress over the whole thing!!!

But the benefit far outweighs the stress!!! Soon, I can actually smile again!! And you will be better off too!!! I won't lie to you ~ I am having some unpleasant issues ~ swelling, a little pain, etc. But it isn't that bad and if I can do it you can too!!!

So happy this website is here for us!! I have gotton alot of tips just in two days. I hope you are feeling at least a little better. Please let us know how you are doing.

Tammy, I am trying so hard to be able to deal with this. But it feels like it seems like one tooth after another is being problematic. Was getting ready for the appt for denture and now I have yet another toothache. The dentist sees nothing on the x-ray but I just know something us up. All the root canal teeth that I have had gone bad never showed up on the xray. Vertical fractures don't show.
Two teeth hurt, and I am not sure which one is causing all the pain. Dentist did several tests and he is not convinced which tooth is either. LIMBO once again.
I am so sick and tired of not being able to eat. Not knowing what is going to happen each day. Did you pull out any teeth that were not symptomatic? How did you come to resolve with that?

My boyfriend just voiced today how he misses the old me. So that is another stress that has just tipped my plate. I just can't seem to get back to myself. Physically its impossible due to the mouth pain and I absolutely hate eating now.

Just feel like everything is in a downward spiral.

Thank you everyone. I have had dental anxiety since I was a child. We didn't have insurance growing up. I had my first root canal at 18. Every trip to the dentist was because you were in oain. Every trip was fillings and needles and pain. My parents never made us brush our teeth, dental preventative was non existant from them. I can tell you every other part of my life is good. I know a few have asked if there is something else going on that can be contributing to how I feel, but there isn't. Everyone has something that is their trigger. Teeth and tooth problems are mine. One tooth issue at a time was difficult, but this multiple extractions this year and now mutiple more has thrown me over the edge.

I am thinking I should give in and take the antidepressant/antianxiety meds. I have so much more dental work ahead and as I mentioned I am not doing well with it mentally.

Yesterday I had to leave work early because I began sobbing at my desk in fear as yet another tooth began to ache after lunch.

I can't function normally anymore, its terrible, scared and shakey 24/7. Barely can sleep or eat.

I am so sorry to hear about your dental anxiety. I, too, have had alot of dental problems. Genetically, both parents have bad teeth. My dad has had full dentures since he was 17. I have had dental probllems since I was 16. My parents did all they could to help me but that only helped so much.

One positive thing I can say is that once it's over ~ and you get thru that ~ you won't have tooth aches anymore!! Same with me, when the swelling and pain from all this is over ~ I'm done!! No more painful and dreaded dental visits.. That is definitely something to look forward too. Hang in there ~ and if I were you, I would take the anxiety meds ~ only for a short time. Sometimes meds are necessary. I sure am grateful for my pain meds right now!!

Same here, I need full mouth extraction as well, I have broken teeth, loose teeth, missing teeth and gaps. Result of smoking, candy, soda and extreme dental phobia . So I wasn't very surprised to get the prognosis, kinda knew already what the news would be. I've had trouble with depression on and off my whole life and this news could have easily sent me spiraling downward. But I'm trying to look at it a different way, I'm trying to be thankful that I don't have to live with my teeth in this condition, that there are other options. No more middle of the night toothaches, no more not wanting to smile, I've actually begun to feel somewhat excited about it. Imagine yourself with a beautiful smile, pain-free, out socializing and having a great time. With the shape my teeth are in, I'll be able to eat a lot more things with dentures than I'm able to now. Tacos! Try to change your way of thinking about it, when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change!:) Blessings, Jayelle

That is a great way to look at it. I have practicaly choked more times than I can count because I haven't been able to chew my food properly. I am excited to know I will be able to eat a lot better and smile without putting my hand over my mouth!! I can't wait to eat some crunchy tacos!! I have been on the soft ones long enough!! What I am really looking forward to is when I can go to Outback steakhouse and order whatever I want!!

All this talk is making me hungry ~ it is lunchtime and I am going to have either a scrambled egg or a baked potatoe. I will check back this afternoon. Bye for now.

BTW, I take Valerian for stress, insomnia and it helps a lot. It's a safe herb you can find anywhere in the vitamin/supplement section, inexpensive, but smells reeeally bad, lol! It's a great natural muscle relaxer.

Thanks for the info ~ never heard of it, but I will definitely check it out. I recently quit taking ambien ~ I started having terrible things happen. I would get up in the middle of the night and eat and say things to my family and not even remember it the next day. Very scary ~ I thank God that I never tried to drive anywhere on the stuff. Not worth all that for a few hours of sleep.

How much does Valerian cost? How much do you take. I have a very high tolerance to most meds ~ even novacaine ~ the surgeon had a lot of trouble numbing me up for my surgery Monday. Said he had only seen a handful of patients as hard to numb as me!! Bummer ~ glad that part is over!!

I take zanaflex for a muscle relaxer. Works pretty good and if I hold off and take a double dose at bedtime it does help me sleep, but only for about 3-4 hours.
I have had clinical insomnia since I was 17. Really sucks ~ no-one really understands unless they have been there!! So, thanx again for the info. ~ I will look for it at the store later when I go get some powder adhesive to try.

100 capsules is around 5 bucks at Walmart, Spring Valley brand. Says take 3 at bedtime, but I've taken a lot more than that once when I threw my back out. Doesn't work immediately like prescription med, you have to take it a few days to get a level going. I like it, it doesn't mess you up where you can't function, just helps you relax and relieves stress.

Butterfly29 ... I'm in my mid 60's and suffered from bone loss, so when my teeth started loosening & it was getting harder to chew, I knew I needed to see a dentist... My parents were very ''lax'' with dental care for me too when I was a child... It was always a toothache or fillings that got me to the dentist ... However, when I had my children, their dental care was a priority for me... Over the years I've had to have extractions too... Finally in April 2013, I had ''14'' teeth extracted, 10 on the top and my ''4'' of my front lowers... Immediately after all the extractions were done, the dentures went in along with a partial on the bottom...They gave me an antibiotic and a special mouth rinse, and I saw my dentist the following day.. I had NO PAIN & NO SWELLING.. In fact, 3 days later I was at my hairdresser, looking normal as ever...So everyone is different ... I had no ''sedation'' either.. I sat in the chair, numbed up good, and just let them proceed..I kept it in my mind that I would have no more PAIN in my mouth and I'd have a beautiful smile... Once it's done, it's over!! From there, it's just visits to the dentist for any adjustments,... If you get ''sore spots'', there's extra ''Fixodent'' on those areas and away ya go till you see the dentist next week! I also found ''Cushion Grip'' too, it's like a ''soft reline'' but adheres to the denture/partial, not your mouth, and soothes those sore spots nicely... After the first few weeks, you'll figure out what ''works & what doesn't''... Having ''extractions'' is not fatal and the payoff is HUGE! You'll have a beautiful smile and never be in pain again from bad teeth... Tammy & Jayelle have given good ''tips'' and advise.. Soon, you'll have permanent dentures/partials and no one will know the difference .. You even get to have ''permanent'' WHITE TEETH!! Now that's a PLUS!! Good Luck to you, but believe me, you'll be ever so happy you did it.. I'm in my permanent dentures, after approx. 6 months when my gums healed... and LOVE IT!! TRUST your dentist and oral surgeon,, You're in good hands and all your ''fears'' will subside, I promise! My favorite saying is: ''Life is about attitude, so have a good one'' ....that get's me thru any ''issues'' I encounter!! Keep updating too, we're all here to support each other!

All,

I am trying very hard to change the way I think, but it is hard. I am not feeling very strong these days. I appreciate everyone writing their experiences and sharing. I feel like I am loosing a part of myself that I can never have back. The loss feels so big to me. Like I am incomplete now. I envy everyone who has been through this and has stayed so positive and optimistic. I have been seeing a therapist over this and just upped my visits to 2 times a week.

The main thing that helped me feel better was watching You Tube videos, yea, seriously! I'm finding that the more informed you can be, knowing what to expect and all, the easier it is to accept it and stop dreading so much. But really, go to You Tube and put in Kalinjax at the top and it'll bring up all her videos. She's a gorgeous girl with a great attitude, only 26 when she had full mouth extraction and dentures. Tons of good info and advice.

So I have yet another tootache, thinking the original plan may need to be modified. Thank goodness were only in the planning stage as I may be added another tooth to the list. Who ca affored to do it twice. So does anyone have Valplast ot flexible denture? I being told you cant add teeth to the flexible dentures?

Any advice on what type of partial is best? I dont have a ton of money especially after all the extractions and failed root canals :-(

I really need to educate myself especially for comfort and durability etc.

She's soo ''in tune'' with her patients, she'll be the gal I invite to my BBQ's too... lots of fun!!! She's african-american and just adopted a little 3 yr. old little girl from Ethiopia... I've got to pop into the office and give her a big hug, she's going to be a great new MOM...

Jayelle, I 'wish'' it was a new man in my life!! Yep, my Dentist is really GREAT... I thoroughly trust her and her ''staff''... They've almost become ''Family''...I'm a lot 'older' than them, so I think they look at me as ''Grandma'' too...My last visit was with her ''associate dentist'', who was only 28 yrs. old... She realized I might be older, but I'm not GRUMPY, always come in with a good ''Attitude, and quite ''in-tune'' with the younger generation.. She gave me a big HUG when I left...and returned for another hug when I told her ''Merry Christmas''... Whattagal!!

Thank Goodness for this site/board. Everyone is so nice and understanding. I swear is one more person says "they're just teeth" to me I may loose my mind. At least here others understand fear anxiety and don't say those 3 words. Thank you for the support it really is helping me come to terms. Still cry alot, but its very helpful in here

I agree, I know only one person with dentures, he had a rough time at first, but is fine now. That seems to be the norm. The few people I've discussed it with IRL make light of it, just as you've described. I even had someone, a close family member tell me, "I don't see what the big deal is, either do it or don't!" Apparently it's not very interesting to anyone unless they're going thru it.

Yes, you are right ~ unless you have been through it, you have no idea how it feels. It has only been one week and I feel alot better!! I ate two chocolate chip cookies a little while ago. My gums are still a little sore when I chew, but it is less and less each day!! Honestly ~ Butterfly29 and Jayelle, you will both be so much happier with your new teeth!! The procedure isn't that bad, and it is totally worth it!!!

Yea, I'm so ready to get this show on the road, but Life keeps happening, postponing me. The place you gave me the number for is in New Orleans which is hours away. Should have done it while I was still in Baton Rouge. It's been crazy, my house wasn't even listed to sell yet when I mentioned to someone that I was thinking about moving, right there on the spot he made me an offer which I accepted. Then I had one month to find a new place, pack up a big house and get out! Not even completely unpacked and was supposed to start an online course yesterday, didn't happen. Now my sis who is supposed to drive/help me is tied up with her husband having urgent surgery, I don't know anyone else in this town yet, lol, haven't had a chance. Calgon *cowboy* Take Me Away!

Praise the Lord,
Butterfly29 and Jayelle people may say its only teeth and what's the big deal, but its words of encouragement to both of
u.They don't mean it in a bad way, but what they are saying is it could have been worst like maybe an arm or leg. They're not being sarcastic or trying to hurt u or make u feel bad.
They look @ teeth as being minute although it does bother one when they lose their teeth but it can be easily overcome.
Like I said before when I had five extracted in the bottom front and four @ the top I felt really bad until my dentist put my partials in and I felt like oh wow that looks good and it gave me my confidents back right there immediately.
I know for some that may have lost all of their teeth it may
make them feel really bad but just remember one thing they
can be replaced one way or another.
An arm or a leg cannot be except for an artificial limb that
really doesn't look human.
It is just so much to be grateful for even when u do lose all
of your teeth and u have to wear dentures or partials they can look so real that no one can even tell if there natural or not.
U can still look good if not better especially if your natural
teeth was not in good condition, and also NO MORE PAIN!
Also u never have to under go no more painful root canals,
no more dentist drilling in your teeth and no more cavities and no more high expense out of pocket.
I'm sure everyone here on this site wished we still had are
own natural teeth but we don't so now we must wear our dentures and partials and go on w/our lives and be happy
and be grateful to God that we were able to afford our brand new smiles, I know I'm happy.
I love u all and may God Bless each of us and strengthen us and to know that He loves us teeth or no teeth, dentures
or partials it doesn't matter to Him.
