I'm having top teeth removed soon...

I have significant bone loss, had expensive laser surgery six years ago to try and improve it but it only succeeded in causing me a bad case of dental phobia and didn't help the bone situation.

My teeth don't look bad. I've lost two so far on top and one on the bottom, all in the back so they aren't noticeable. I currently have pain though in a couple and there's not enough bone left in the top to salvage the remaining teeth. I go in March 12th to have all the tops removed, the back molar on each side on the bottom, and a deep root cleaning to save the remaining bottom teeth. The bone loss isn't as significant on bottom and the dentist wants to make sure it doesn't get worse since according to him, lower plates are much harder to live with. I'm 47. My dentist is an anesthesiologist so I'll be paying an extra grand to be put completely under by IV sedation.

I'm upset, scared of the procedure, worried about how I will look and to a lesser extent, how they'll function. I don't want to even think of how I will look when I have to take them out. I don't want ANYONE to see me without teeth, especially my husband. He's great, has assured me time and again that it doesn't bother him a bit, it changes nothing, and will be better for my health. He travels constantly, has his own business, a partner and a few employees and has made arrangements to be home for at least a week after my procedure, which was a tough schedule to revise and I'm grateful for his support.

I don't really have a question I guess, just venting. I haven't told anyone but one friend and just looking for some advice I guess on how to handle this. Take care all.

Stephanie,

I'm 28 and I just had my uppers done. I was extremely worried about not being sedated. I didn't have the extra 1-2 thousand for IV sedation. And my dentist at Aspen Dental was not worried at all that she wouldnt have a problem with local anesthetic. So the day of I went in and she used novocaine or what ever they use now and numbed me up real good. I put the loudest music on my iPhone ( I use Spotify ) and she did her thing. About a half an hour to 45 later the teeth were out no problems and I had my denture in place. If having no teeth for a few days is your biggest thing. That was mine too. Don't rush it. Find someone who will put one in right away. Or make one ahead of time. I'm on day 3 and have had very little discomfort. Still have the narcotic script sitting next to me. Only filled the Motrin for swelling. I have a great support system as well. My fiancé and I are getting married in 2 months and I wanted to be able to smile again and now I can. I literally haven't stopped. It's an amazing feeling. This message board answered all my questions and put me at ease. My teeth were messed up from 25 years of seizure meds and this was my option. If you look back at my post you can find the picture.

Best of luck to you

I should say Sabrina that I am so sorry this happened to you and that you also have to go through it at an even younger age than I am. It's just not an emotionally easy thing to do. I never cry. I've been married 17 years an I bet my husbands only seen me cry like this three or four times. The being unable to undo it is the hard part. I kept thinking I was making a mistake. The weeks, them days, leading up to it were terrible, then the day of, getting in the car, it was awful for me. Now I'm on the other side and I'm glad it's over and that dread and anxiety is behind me. I feel much better without that hanging over my head.

Sabrina, keep bottom teeth as long as possible, lower is harder to keep in with adhesive. One thing is that losing upper teeth seems more traumatic than bottom. Since you will be eating more carefully, your bottom won't be as stressed to break. I decided not to challenge my teeth with real chewy things. I just want them to stay in as long as possible. Your attitude is great. Fight the negative thoughts. You will know when you have to deal with lower.

Sabrina  the dentist told me  I could  keep my lower teeth  that's  second  option  keep them I f I want  too  but I need a particle  on lower cause they mite pull a few out  but its better  than paying for  root cannales  and  crowns  which h  I probably  have to have  like  2  crowns  .  so the alternative  I s pull some out  wnder  if particlles  are any good  .  some are  better  that none  yes  sabrinaa  keep  up  positive  about  it  and it will be  good
