Kinda concerned and a little embarassed

I have heard many of these stories...and it is very daunting knowing my case is probably worst of all...you see my family has a genetic annomoly that weakens the enamel so cavities wreck havoc with us.... I am now 55 and now have no choice but to get upper and lower plates with maybe 8 or 9 teeth left it is quite embarassing to even say that...so I am making the trek to mexico to have them done as americas prices are rather large, I am not sure how to go about this, should I get the teeth removed and stay at the hotel for a week then get fitted of simply fit them directly after? any advice would be golden...Thank you all

Please don't be embarrassed. I'm 47 and have full dentures for almost three years for the same exact reason. Horribly bad enamel on my teeth. If you could get your dentures in the states, I would recommend that. You will have to have many adjustments to keep your dentures fitting properly during your healing process and after. I don't know how close you are to the border so that could be difficult to get back and forth. If you are, I'd plan on a week there, at the least. Just in case you have complications.

Hey Randell.... Don't be embarrassed! ! It's a process... and life changing BUT you're in the right place here. This is an amazing community to get help from. Not everyone will share the same experiences, but not everyone is the same. With that being said. I'm 34, had a full upper immediate placed right away after my extractions. Now, I heard that immediates don't fit right and how some people have to get adjustments weekly. I did not experience any of this. I had my surgery on 9/6/2017. I have had 2 adjustments since and my denture fit amazing . The oral surgeon was very surprised by how well it fit.
I will need a partial bottom, as I only have 7 natural teeth on the bottom. I didn't not get the immediate bottom as the dentist and surgeon that it was good to wait until I get use to the top. Good call on their part lol. It is a lot to get use to.
I suggest you do what you feel comfortable with. I personally didn't want to go without and I paid $1200 just for the top immediate and it was well worth it for me. I couldn't imagine myself without, I saw nothing good about not having teeth.
Now, I do want to say this, and sorry for the lengthy response, I was told to take the denture out after 48 hours. I could not do it. My gums were so swollen. I made an appt with the dentist and he didn't even want to take them out, so I waited until I was able to feel comfortable.. I tried 4 days post op. Don't worry if you cannot take them out right away, you'll get it out... trust me... lol

I wish you the best!! Have a safe trip!

I am two weeks out after having all uppers extracted and getting immediate upper denture. I left it in for the first 48 hours and the dentist took it out to check the gums at that point. I would suggest staying a week and getting the immediate. good luck. I am 41 and I know your pain and dilemma. My new smile is looking creat. This is a major life adjustment. I feel like I speak differently. Practice speaking aloud...

Hi Randell,

I'm not sure where you are geographically, but one avenue I was looking at is based in San Diego.  It's called FreeDentalImplants.org and they do the All-On-Four implants.  The name is slightly misleading - only the actual implant surgery is free.  You didn't mention your bone density, but even if it's compromised, they can usually do the All-On-Four posts.

They take you across the border to Mexico on a bus for the surgery. This is because the American dentist is teaching other dentists from around the country, and in California you cannot actually do implant surgery unless you are licensed in California.

So they take you across the border in a bus, you stay there for 3 days, and then they bring you home.  It's great if you're local or convenient to San Diego, or independently wealthy and can fly back and forth from wherever you live to San Diego.

The other catch is the cost of the teeth.  One arch (upper or lower) can run around $22K for the permanent teeth.  Which leaves me out - that's a car payment, and I cannot afford another car payment working for a struggling, underfunded charter school.

There are many people in the same general circumstance so please don't feel self-conscious.  Read up, go to YouTube and watch the journeys of others, and post here lots.  There are so many wonderful, helpful and caring people here.

It's good to meet you!

Man you all are amazing and have beautiful hearts...I live in az so pretty close to me I was looking at going to american Bio Dental in Tiajauna Mexico....all holistic and the prices are beyond unbelivable...they also pick you up at the airport then across the border to the hotel where the clinic is located inside...so sounds good to me :)

I have an upper denture for about a year now and I absolutely hate them, I find myself only putting them in when it's time to eat or go out.  I have decided to get implants done.  i am going to Cancun to get it done there.   What would cost $50K here will be less then $15K.  Only problem is that I can't find anyone who can take the week to 10 days off to make the trip with me.

i just checked out the clinic you mentioned and I submitted their form.  Do you need to have a passport if you're landing in the US and driving over the border?  Will you be staying at a hotel in San Diego or at the hotel where the clinic is located?

Hi Lynn,

Are you asking me about the San Diego dentist?  I can't afford the teeth so I'm not going to do that at this point.  I'm not ruling it out in the future, but right now I just can't.  We're already drowning in debt.

I wish you a great deal of luck though - I'd go with you to Cancun in a heartbeat if I could!  :-D
