Looking into more affordable options :/

Hi :)

My name is Robert, I'm turning 27 on December third.

I have always had bad teeth as a child, but nothing major, the main problem was coming from a poor home, Then later in my life depression, and being homeless then finally slowly getting somewhere in life with hard efforts.

I finally managed to get the courage to go to the dentist today in hopes of getting dentures..
Now I went through a lot of depression over the years and started letting myself go :/. So you could imagine what my bill was estimated at.

My bill was at 10,000++ for extractions dentures etc.

I was really hoping to be able to do something for myself as well build up some kind of confidence.. I'm still at the bottom of the food chain working my way up to the top. I don't have dental insurance. I could afford it.. If I found one and a way, as well could understand the process of filing paperwork..

I'm hoping there is some hope, maybe someone might be able to point me into a direction.

I could upload the entire bill on what needs to be done if that would help any..

Thank you for reading my post :)

See if there is an Affordable Dentures or Aspen Dental in your area. Care credit may be an option as well. Check reviews before deciding! There is also an amazing facebook group for support if you're interested. It's called Dentures/ Before and after. Don't give up hope! There ARE options!

Awe thank you Margaret :)

Sharon, There is one far away, I failed to mention I am temporarily driving a moped until I pay DMV to get my license back '600 USD', Been driving mopeds for almost a decade. I don't really have anyone I can rely upon to help me in that situation it's just me. I will definitely consider looking into them when the time comes. Thank you.

Hey Debra, I looked up Affordable Dentures, It's a 50 minute or more by car. I'm not really sure if they could extract all of the teeth but it's worth a try :) thank you

I know when I was calling around places well before I made any executive decisions, I called some dental schools also. They had a wait list and the process was so much longer then as of you were to get the extractions and everything else at a dentist office or surgeons office. I would tall to them and and ask questions. Alot of schools have websites with FAQs... that helped me also when I looked into schools.
I used care credit, it helped me with my immediate upper. I couldn't get the immediate where I was going ro so I went elsewhere. If you're paying out of pocket, you need to understand, you have choices. That's what's nice about paying out of pocket lol, but such bc you don't get much of a break financially.
I did immediate bc I couldn't go without. Not everyone is like that though.
About the bill, that sounds about right. I had my extractions and stuff done in a hospital setting so I believe with that atmosphere, you pay more... not sure about a dental office and being so much?

Hi Robert,, not knowing the circumstances of your teeth I can't offer advise about where to go. But I do wonder how many different estimates you got. $10,000 is a lot of money. I had my entire top out and permanent one in immediately. I loved having it done that way. If I need adjustments they will make them. They like to wait 6 mo. knowing that the gums with shrink.
Thank God we have insurance.. Between the insurance and out of pocket it cost under $2000.
We paid roughly $800. I wish you good luck, to be able the work that you need, done.
God Bless

Hello Robert, look for a state Board of Health within your area and apply for assistant. Cost is little to nothing for extractions and dentures.

Hi Robert and welcome to the group!

First comment - thank God that you are on an upward path!  Well done!

Second - my thought would be maybe call and "shop" around the local dentists in your area.  There are many professionals (medical, dental, etc.) who are more than willing to work with people who, like you, are working hard to put a future together for themselves.

See if anybody would work with you especially on the extractions, because you can look up Russell Klein on Etsy and get a great deal on your dentures, and from all I am able to tell he does a great job.

I've even heard of people doing a "Fund Me" to get financial gifts that can help you get your dental work done, though some have a difficult time accepting financial assistance like that.

However you manage - please keep posting because there are some really great people on this forum, helpful and kind and empathetic.

:-D

Hi Robert and welcome aboard. I too would say shop around.
I had gone to a dentist 10 years ago who quoted me $17,000 to redo my whole mouth. I had dental insurance they only cover $1,000 a year and I told him I wasn't going to buy him a new boat that my mouth could wait. I found out 3 or4 years later that he wanted to do implants which I didn't ask for. I too have bad teeth have been trying for years to get someone to pull them and give me dentures. Most of them would tell me I've had extensive work done on my teeth and they wouldn't pull them. So I just let them go and only went if I had an issue.
Well this year my teeth started breaking off because of my diabetes, they weren't painful because I had already had root canals done in those teeth. But I finally found a dentist that did 13 extractions and did an upper plate for me around $3,000. They did offer for me to apply for financial loan but I had just applied for Care Credit like 6 months before so I use that.

Hi,, Robert!
I am a long time denture wearer. I had my upper dentures pulled in the 1970's I am on my third ones because they just simply wear out as we eat all the time. My first tooth popped out when I was eating popcorn. That was back when I was in my early 40's, btw I did have my teeth pulled and the new one's put in immediately
They gave me an iv and injections in my gums to get them all out at once and this year I finally had my lower teeth removed, I only had 6 left by this time, I am 75 years old andd these teeth have given me more trouble than the others did foe the last 35 years. I just had to have my lower gums split open to scrape leftover fragments of root and bone that was left behind by the dentist who pulled them. Another dentist in his office had to clean up the mess he left me with, now I am waiting for my gums to heal back together, this time I had to have stitches putin to pull them back together. Thank Our Wonderful Father in Heaven that at times like this we do have insurance. My brother is an attorney and they often help people without any money and that is called "Pro Bono" and they work without charge. Surely there are dental schools out there who do the same thing, but always demand to know all the details up front! Hope this wasn't too long and hope it helps you out, I still remember when I was your age too. Sincerily PATRICIA

Oh my, Well my pc shutdown latter after my last post, And I couldn't seem to find this web page again...

I have read over all of the comments, And I think I would like to do a full response to all of them

But please mind that this is going to take a while so I want to shorten my response as much as possible :). I'm very humble to all of my help and feedback!

I did a lot of looking around with schools, But I stopped once I found a free dental clinic at a church, Don't know much about it, But I will eventually check them out at least by time I get off my moped and driving my car 'Long drive'. Maybe they could at least do some extractions, And if they cant do the surgical ones I'll return to an office that can. Maybe they could help with cheap dentures maybe not. I tried looking up the keywords "Denture Impression Kit".

As I was going to get snap on veneers, But my teeth are far to bad for them. They use a kit in that method, But my luck was shortened as there isn't much support...

My teeth are sadly far to gone, From living poor and fighting through life, It was either survive or don't.. If my job would of supplied me dental insurance all of my teeth could of been saved about four years ago.. A little disappointed with my job and the amount of time I have invested into them to not really get much help back...

I will look into the state board of health, Thank you Natalie!

Please keep in mind that while I am really trying to see if I can get this problem fixed I am at a stand still until I get off my moped and get my license back, I live in the middle of no where and even a simple ride into the country side of town takes a long time. "Hopefully by time I get my license I will go from 300 in two weeks to about 300 a week". Everything at this time is in a financial book I put together, I have to stick to the plan or I wont get everything taken care of better,.

I really appreciate everyones kind words as well experiences :). I'm humbly thankful for them all!

Being in a rural area makes it very hard to find services for assistance of many types but you seem to have a plan and a good plan is hard to beat.
Things will happen when they're supposed to.

Good idea on the church!

I am really happy you are doing this for yourself.

Honestly, dental insurance ain't all it's cracked up to be. I have dental insurance and have had to pay out of pocket for all my stuff. The insurance is only as good as the dentist that takes it.

If you have to take it slow, so be it. Do it right the first time and you won't have to do it again.

Keep us posted cause I sure am rooting for you!!

Where do you live? The dental clinic I use in Alabama is $35 per extraction, not sure about surgical though. My 11 extractions and immediate denture was $636. I have been back 5 times and no charge any of those. Mo relines until 4 months though. I bought my "permanent" denture for $450 on Etsy. I know I will need another denture at 8-12 months but my immediate was so bad I burned it...literally.

I'm from Texas and got only tops pulled and top denture. Before insurance it was about 3500. Out of pocket we paid about 1250. That's all top teeth extractions plus immediate denture and in Dec I get my permanent denture.

I'm currently living in southern California (which is weird for a Midwestern gal) and it is expensive out here.  I'll have to dig out my paperwork, but we're with Concordia dental and my co-pay on extractions is $50.  My insurance caps at $1,750 a year per insured, so I paid cash and did not submit a claim for my immediate.  I feel foolish that I just paid $850 for an acrylic blob that fits me horribly and that the dentist refuses to have re-made.  If I had done a little more homework a little sooner, I could have had an immediate and a permanent from RK and been happy as a clam.

Tampa, Florida area. I am enclosing a picture of my bill. I have only had to pay the $308. so far. Rest is Insurance Pending. I have Cigna Insurance. Most I believe that will be out of pocket is $723. With the final $199. of that due in 6 mo. when they do a check on me to see if I will need any adjustments.

Yes, I don't have Dental Insurance. I am located in Mechanicsville, Virginia.

I tried really really hard to get a nice photo from my visit and 12 pictures later this was the best I could get LOL.

Visit 3 total was 5,643.00. There was only 2 extractions on the next page.

The first thing I saw on here is $1,800 for each of your partial dentures.  My suggestion would be to shop that around a LOT.  I've really done a lot of research on a gentleman named Russell Klein, a retired denturist who now has his lab in his home.  He's "retired" but still making dentures and without quoting a price without knowing what I'm talking about, I would be SHOCKED if both of your partials together would cost HALF of what one is quoted on that picture.  That's just crazy pricing right there.

Still, I know they do charge that at a dentist's.  My dentist had me pay $850 cash so we could "save the insurance" for the permanent because it would be more expensive.  But now that I've found Russell - I'm not going to put my partial on insurance at all.  The price for my upper partial is going to be less than $500.

So please - shop around.  If you want to learn more about Russell Klein, he's on Etsy under the store name denturestore.

Between the church's help with the extractions and the reasonably priced partials that are available, I would hope you could knock a huge chunk off of this quote.

Praying for you!

Hi Robert, Wow! That's a lot of money to handle for someone who has no Insurance. I feel so bad for you.
Have you actually had all this done yet? And if so are they letting you make payments? Or is that just a contract in case you were to use them? Who could afford to pay all that upfront. I know I wouldn't be able to.

Yes it is a lot of money, And sadly no I have not. They spoke to me about how they have services with Wells Fargo, But I have not had the chance to get in contact with them, And with what's already owed out on my part I doubt they will help me much at all.

They had spoke to me saying if I were to get dental insurance that I could pay around 6,000 possibly instead.Delta Dental.

I'm actually looking into getting a loan to help me get to where I want to be at in life, which will result in making more money. Depending on how that goes will result in how I could go about this. Everything right now is sadly a waiting game. Once I get a normal loan I should be able to pay it off in five months or so..

Then that's when I will definitely look into that loan with Wells Fargo. But firstly ensure I have anything done with the free dental at the church I spoke about. Hopefully anything they can do will be done by that time. "They might even help me with getting super cheap dentures".

I'm a bit confused Robert. Was the figure of $5643 for the entire work? When you said that with Insurance it would only be $6,000. something didn't click. Why would having Insurance make it cost more? Am I missing something?

I had to make a significant dip into my 401k and then just refused to think about it again.  I made the decision and then just told myself to just keep moving forward.  I'm going for the full mouth restoration and it is akin to putting the equivalent of a new BMW in my mouth.  I sadly happen to live in a very expensive area of Maryland and I refuse to travel with all the visits I need to finish this up.

Anyone know if it would be possible to get only enough teeth pulled to get a partial for the top without the snap in part?

So far dental places keep saying we need to snap it in.. My teeth are not good enough be able to snap them in...

My thought behind it is I could get more teeth added to the dentures as time goes on. My top teeth are the worst... I would want to do the same to the bottom once I recover financially. Then once I recover again just begin getting the rest pulled, recover then get the dentures completed.

I'm actually calling the financial services tomorrow, As well looking into the dental, I wont worry about either if wells fargo cannot help me. I will just adventure over to the church

YES, that is a definite possibility. I wore partial dentures for many years. Just have the necessary ones extracted. The partial, will have a wire which goes around one of your good teeth on each side’. And when you have more extractions, they will add teeth to the denture. My dentist wisely advised that I keep the partial as long as possible. Now that I have full dentures, I know why. The partial stays in place, and you can eat, The full denture, especially the lower one. Has nothing to hold on to and it’s impossible to eat normally any more.

Here in Buffalo, I spent just over 5 thousand and that included IV for the extractions.  If you do a go fund me page, and I think that's a good idea, especially if you tell us your story, I am sure many people here would help you.  I would.  Make sure you let us know and get on the fb site mentioned above and let them know.  I think our tight little community here could really help you out.  If each of us does 40 or so, it would go a long way.  But do shop around, there has to be a lower price out there.

In Texas and my total was $2200. It includes all of the following services: 11 (or 12?) teeth pulled, immediate temporaries, ($200 ) for the sleeping pill, then new permanent in January. All the adjustments I needed in first 60 days and 2 soft reline during the healing time. I paid more to get the next to the top of the line permanent. Out of pocket, didn't file with insurance.
