New start

Day 4 of having dentures. (put in immediately after 7 extractions) Just curious on if what my dentist told me is correct. I specifically asked if I should brush daily, how often do I take them out. He said...to keep them in as long as I can for a month then take them out and clean them once a week. Well...they're uncomfortable, I assumed it's because it's a foreign object in my mouth. But reading things here. I'm guessing that's not the case. I know I pretty much have to learn to eat again. I haven't tried solid stuff yet. I attempted a piece of melon and yeah, that's a no go. As my extractions still feel much like a bruise. I'm ok with that. Just wondering will I ever get to eat a steak again? haha. My real concern is...how often do I remove these? What do I use to clean them? Where do I find a denture brush? I didn't know there was a difference, I've been brushing them like I do my teeth daily with my regular electric brush. I hope I haven't ruined them :(
Kind of upset my dentist didn't give me more specific information.

Call his office and ask the questions. As for brushing I was told to use a soft bristle toothbrush. Dint know when you can take them out...question for the denist...but I have heard others say it was hard to get them back in due to the healing. Not sure about the steak...I cant do that yet.lol

Patti I did call, I even went back the following Monday after my procedure (as a check up) and asked again. I got the same response as I stated. That's why I'm here asking :) Eating is definitely different. Not that I'm complaining I could stand to lose a few lbs lol

When I had my teeth pulled I had 28 extractions at once I was told to leave my dentures in for 24hr and then take them out at night following the first night. I soak mine in denture cleansing tabs at night. I was told as I'm brushing then you hold them like you mouth is shut and brush softly up and down not across the teeth as they say it will ware then down. It took me about 1 1/2 months before I could eat steak but it is possible just remember to keep them in and don't mess with them while they are in and you will get used to them a lot quicker. It will be tender and sore but gotta remember it's traumatic to your mouth to have teeth pulled. Hope that helps.

Hi Mara, zinc hasn't been removed from paste adhesives. Most of our products have it, but some do not. All the ingredients used in Fixodent products, including zinc, are recognized as safe in the amounts used. Of course, all our products need to be used as directed. If you would like a list of our no-zinc-added products, just let me know! :)

Since I asked about it, I've done a little research myself.  Since it's included in mutivitamin/mineral products, it eases my mind about it.  I thought perhaps it was something that could cause allergic reactions in some people.  I have lots of allergies so I wanted to be sure I was not adding to the list by using a product with zinc in it if it might cause me trouble.

My main problem remains removing paste (which is all I've used) adhesive from my gums.  I'm getting better at it, but I sill would like as much information as possible on removal methods to get it all out of my mouth.  I don't like swallowing residue which is what happens.

I use warm water to take my dentures out. Sometime something sweet that you are eating will loosen them too.

Taking them out is easy for me. As I'm still new I don't have the need for an adhesive yet. I still have quite a bit of swelling due to extractions.

Hi Heather, welcome to the forum! I’m sorry to hear that your transition to dentures hasn’t been very comfortable. Unfortunately, that’s often the case with dentures put in right after extractions- not fun! I hope the advice you’ve received so far helps a bit. As some have said, you can clean your dentures with a soft toothbrush, denture brush, denture cleansing tablets, or any combination of those. It also sounds like you didn’t get a starter pack for your dentures- if you’d like, please click this personalized link and I’ll get one to you.

I, too, would like to have one of your "starter packs."  My dentist gave me only minimal supplies and no printed information to help me get started.  Consequently, at going on a year out from my first extractions, I'm still having problems.  I have used Fixodent, but I encounter problems with it the same as with most other brands on the market.  I think I must be doing something wrong.

Ok the only thing my dentist gave me was the mouth guard for the dentures at night and that was it he told me buy a tooth brush and a denture tooth paste when ask him about adhesive he said fixodent and gave me this website and also a very small tube of it. No instructions though on how to do anything. Thanks for this site it has been a god send

Hello and this is a great site!  I am wondering if the Rep Mara would help me to get a starter pack and also could you tell me if it is safe to leave the denture in for about 5 days or longer until the stitches come out.  I am rinsing with the oral rinse for healing.  I am taking my antibiotics as well.

Iam not worried about the zinc. We need it in our diet anyway. Even the products that say no zinc still have a small amount in them.
No matter how long there in there is still foing to be some paste left in the mouth. But the longer in the better and the less amount you use the better. I rinse out with warm/hot salt water, then use a washcloth to rub it off. Its usually worse on the palate.
I have used the powder today and dont think its very good. Goes on easy but I can feel that it will my lower will come loose as soon as I eat.

One thing is clear, we are all different. At least we have options now and people to share with that care and understand.

Well I dont care for the powder....another 9 bucks wasted. Stayed on for 4 hours loose as soon as I took a bite. And I am not eating anything hard or sticky.
