Russell Klein (DentureStore on Etsy): Legit Or Conman?

  • Question
  • Updated 2 months ago
Hello, pleased to meet everyone. :)

So, I'm desperate. I need dentures.

While Googling, I stumbled across Russell Klein on Etsy. He does by-order custom dentures.

Great reviews. Great prices. On the surface, he seems legit.

The problem is . . .

There's an infamous company that does the EXACT SAME thing as Russell. This company seems to operate under multiple domain names. Worst of all, this company appears to lean towards the scammy side. They're all over Rip Off Report and similar sites with complaints and negative reviews.

My lingering, worrying thought is that Russell Klein may be a front for this company, and the positive reviews paid shills.

I hope like hell he's not, but it's something I needed to investigate before I sent out hard-earned money.

So, my questions:

Has anyone here tried Russell? Is he legit? Is there any way his legitimacy can be confirmed?

Thanks.

I plan to order some from RK. I have a great set of $5000 dentures that look, fit and feel great, but I want a backup pair. I'm willing to gamble the $500 on RK. Who knows, they may become my main set.

$500? You should be aware that the actual cost of the dentures is just the beginning. By the time I paid for months of frustration & disappointment getting wax try-ins that were a bad joke along with all of the impressions that supposedly had to be done again & again; I had well over $1,000 invested. Once I finally gave up & realized it was hopeless, I did get the original cost of the dentures back, but the rest of my money was down the drain. You should also know that Russell Klein might be a real person, but you won't be dealing with one person, much less him. Every message I received in the months I wasted on that fiasco was clearly from a different person each time who never knew what had gone before so I always had to backtrack to bring the current "Russell Klein" up to speed. Horrible experience.

So let's say they are $1000. Besides being impatient and frustrated, what actually COST did you have?

My first pair with RK was perfect. Absolutely perfect and took 4 weeks. Then my dentist rebased the denture. I was livid. Ordered another one from RK. It took 8 weeks and was ok. Looked great. Fit OK, not great. I made it work. Then I ordered a flexible partial. OMG the nightmare of it. 4 wax tryins. 5 months. Overnight shipping charges. A partial finally arrived that didn't match the last wax tryin at all. The left side was ok. The right wouldn't fit in between my natural teeth. Not even close. My dentist tried to fix it for me. Couldn't get it right. It was rough, as in not poloshed. Too big and actually broke. It took a month to get a response from RK about it. He never made it right. Never offered. Just kept saying that he had been on vacation. I am out $1200.00 and 5 months of waiting. I loved my first set. I mean, I wish I still had them. But the rest if my experience was horrible. So what am I out?? $1200.00 of my very hard earned money and nothing at all to show for it.

Wow, you had been so supportive of RK you would think you would get the best service..but what an experience. And to think a dentist took it upon himself to screw up a set you were happy with. I raised hell with my dentist and got a full refund. Was supposed to be a soft reline. Not a rebase. I was responsible as well, but never having had a reline I didn't know how it works...

Diane O'Kelley, in the first place, I don't consider waiting almost SIX MONTHS "impatient." Yes, it was a frustrating experience. As I said, the wax try-ins I received---all of them-- were so bad they were funny in an awful sort of way. No way were they made for my mouth, none of them, and there were several. No matter how bad the wax try-ins were, regardless of whether or not they even fit, I had to pay over & over for more. I paid extra for the so-called premium set of dentures that were supposed to be custom made for me. And yes again, it was quite frustrating, not to mention worrisome & a legitimate cause for concern, that my communication with the alleged Russell Klein was handled by a different person in every instance for months. Each time, I had to go back to square one & tell the person on the other end what had transpired before, why the latest ridiculous wax try-in didn't work, etc etc etc.

What was I actually out? Hmmm....let's see....how about MONTHS of waiting for a set of dentures I could wear without ever getting them? How about several hundred dollars worth of "extra" charges  for such things as impressions they claim need to be done again & again, wax try-ins, and more? That may not be anything much in your book, but it is in mine and would be to most people. I finally had to open a case with Etsy to get roughly half my money back. Just think of all the people who have been through the same scenario & all the money that leaves in RK's pocket for non-refunded charges that can't even be verified? Hundreds of dollars over & above the refund for the initial payment for the dentures they didn't get, times heaven only knows how many people every day, week, month & year? Nice little chunk of change, huh? Can we say "ra-cket?"

People, beware of all these probably paid shills that are on here and other places on the internet, shouting the praises of Russell Klein dentures. Sure, there may be a lucky few that get dentures that fit & look halfway presentable, but I daresay they're very much the minority. I don't make dentures. I'm not in competition with Russell Klein or anybody else in that profession. Don't have a horse in that race. So why would I---or anybody else that has merely told the truth about their bad experience with Russell Klein---lie about it? If you want to ignore the truth, Diane O'Kelley, go ahead. Proceed at your own risk. You've been fairly warned. The end.

I asked a question. Your aggressive attitude, unwarranted defensiveness and condescending tone towards me gives me pause in believing your story 100%. I simply wanted to know what expenses, beyond the impression kit and dentures, that you had to incur. According to his page and others, those are the ONLY 2 expenses. I frankly don't appreciate the snotty tone.

Let me try to answer this. You pay $50 for wax tryins. I had 4. Others have more. Each one is $50. Like her I had to redo impressions. Not sure why. Never had to with dentures. Only after the third wax tryin for the partial wasn't right. I had to pay for that as well. In that kit I was missing the wax bite. I had to buy that too. Plus shipping. Each way had to be done with express due to the heT (they can melt or dry out). So, $500, plus 4 wax tryins was $700. Then shipping each way was 25 x 8 plus impressions and denture. $1100.00. Then my dentist appointment for adjustment was $100. I have $1200.00 in the process and no partial. At Affordable dentures the cost is $1200 for a flexible and it's done in 3-7 business days. If it doesn't fit their guarantee allows remakes up to 100 days. RK has no guarantees. Don't like what you get?? it's too bad. If he had even offered to do anything for me I would have been happy. He basically said, "i was on vacation. Sorry you are not happy. " then 3 months later I got a shipping notice he had shipped me a package. I was excited. Maybe he redid the partial. Nope. He "accidentally " marked things shipped to clear his Etsy account....uh huh.

I had experience with RK too. I would not send anyone in his direction. I agree there is more than one person on his end answering emails and no way would time permit one man to be making all of these dentues by himself. . In my opinion he seems to be usung his 2 denture labs to  do his orders, which would not be bad if they had good quality controll, although etsy is to be hand made goods produced by the seller only And his bio says he is doing these dentures by himself. The 2 pretty girls who promote his wares  could certainly be benenfitting in some way as they convinced me to buy the high dollar dentures.
After this experience and then with another online guy I started making my own dentures and have a Facebook group, "Do Your Own Dentures".  When requesting membership just answer a few questions. We are sharing onfo on making and adjusting our dentures.
I can imagine a person could get very snarky after going through all of those hoops and money paid out through the RK company. If you  are not satisfied with RK work you can send the dentures  back to get 1/2 of your original purchase price back, and then you have nothing for all you have invested. Read the list of charges the other person spent. That is not part of the refunded amount. It can be a night mare and an expensive one. Yes at Affordable you may have to really keep after them to make your dentures correctly but you have recourse if they do not produce what they sold to you. Meanwhile I will continue to make my own and have as many sets as I want and they are comfortable. And I am getting rather good at this and you can do it too.

Debi Hilley now you didn't mention that the $25 postage fee was your choice. I only payed $8 dollars with a tracking number. The total I payed to RK was $1100. Dollars that includes all the adjustments. I don't find that over priced since my dentist charges more then that just for the upper denture. My last wax try-in felt pretty good I was being a bit pick so he is readjusting them but I think this is going to be the last adjustment and then my Ulta dentures top and bottoms will be sent to me. Yes, I've been waiting a few months but that's my fault for sending the wax try-ins back to be readjusted ( paying $8 bucks for shipping each time). I find what I paid very reasonable actually more then reasonable. I'm sorry you had a bad experience.

Hope it works out for you Anna. I kept hoping everything would eventually be okay for me, too. But it wasn't. Yes I agree that $1100 wouldn't be bad at all IF you ended up with high quality, good looking & well fitting dentures. But only if you did.

Thanks I really think it's going to work out. I do understand that not everyone will be satisfied with their dentures. He's human and I'm sure he makes mistakes. I'm hoping this last adjustment is the last one ( like I said I've been pretty picky). I will let you all know how they come out in a few weeks.

The express shipping was NOT MY CHOICE. It was summer. He said it had to be done to prevent damage from the heat. And my last tryin fit perfectly. Then the teeth were not the same when they arrived and I got dead silence from him. You really need to see my screenshots to understand. It was freaking ridiculous. All he had to do was say "sorry" but instead he blamed me. Repeatedly.

One last comment: As far as this "other" Russell Klein operation...his evil twin if you will...I seriously doubt there is one. No, based on my own experience with RK, I find it more likely that it's all the same outfit & the supposedly false Russell Klein was made up to account for all the bad PR. I went directly through the Russell Klein denture store on Etsy, not some fly by night domain. Be willing to bet that almost everyone else has, too. So there you have it. Claiming that a fake RK is getting a load of complaints & bad reviews reminds me of what the police have always called the TODDI defense: The Other Dude Did It. lol

I don't know either unless like I said, some people actually manage to get a decent set in a timely manner. Sounds like you got lucky the first time & then your luck ran out. :(

Have you tried contacting Etsy about getting some of your money back? You won't get it all back but something would be better than nothing.

Really Diane? I didn't much appreciate your condescending tone & remarks about my being "impatient" etc. As I said, I waited six months for dentures I could wear & never got them. That's not impatient. Nor did I like your smart comment about what was I "actually out?" Like I didn't have a legitimate grievance & wasn't out waaay too much money in view of the fact that I wound up with nothing to show for it. Don't be a whiny crybaby, Diane. If you can dish it out, you'd best be prepared to take it. As far as whether or not you believe me, I could care less. I'm telling of my miserable & expensive experience with Russell Klein to maybe save others from going through what I did.

Yes, Debi! That's exactly what he pulled on me. Charge after charge---non-refundable and none of it verifiable---and none of it made a whit of difference when it came to providing me with a wearable set of dentures. Custom dentures my foot. Like I said before, they were all so bad it was almost comical. I don't know whose wax try-ins I kept getting but none of them could possibly have been made for me. The last pair, or should I say the last straw after months of getting jerked around & running up more & more expenses for all those extra charges, the teeth were so bad my sister & I laughed until our sides hurt. They were huge. Seriously. I had to stretch my mouth to even get them in & looked just like Mr. Ed. Not exactly what I had envisioned for my wonderful "custom" set of Russell Klein dentures. lol

I want to mention something that I may not have made clear. Waiting six months for dentures was inconvenient, for sure, and disappointing. But if I could have seen a light at the end of the tunnel, I'd have hung in there & kept waiting & paying, hoping for a happy ending. After all, by that time I was almost too deep to get out. However, each wax try-in was worse than the one before. I don't mean I just didn't like any of them, although I didn't. I mean they were absolutely awful & not one set of them even fit. One set had such buck teeth I could have eaten an apple through a picket fence. One had weirdly long incisors like those Halloween fake teeth you can buy. I looked like a vampire. Two had this great big bulging pink ledge thing in back of my front bottom teeth. The thing was so big & thick my tongue wouldn't even lay flat over it. No joke. I have no idea what that was about. When I opened my mouth, it was all you could see. Those I got twice, by the way. The last ones, the Mr. Ed set, did it for me. I knew there was no hope at all of ever getting a decent set of dentures from RK & decided to cut my losses & give up before he cost me even more money for nothing.

My purpose is to make my own dentures whenever I need them and to make them to fit my face, be functional and I like to look like my old self before I lost my teeth. With each set it gets better. If I had not had such bad luck with those other denture makers, to include Aspen in my town I would not be enjoying this money saving hobby I want each and every person to be in charge of their own dentures. If they buy them from anywhere they need to know how to adjust them. Once you get your supplies together each set of dentures costs about $25 to make. It might take two or three times to get them to where you love what you produce and then you are making dentures you love, with the proper mouth closure and  you can look into the mirror and see the person you  were before needing dentures.

I have relatives who live near RK's place of business. If I gave a good crap I would send them over to see his operation but I have moved on and am glad to be making my own. Never to look like a horse of course... or if I did I would just make a new set.  I ordered some form another online guy and they were lovely except they allowed my mouth to close too far with no room for my tongue. It took me a while to realize the problems and by then I had said they were good. They sure looked good but after a while my mouth closed so far shut it hurt my jaws. I ordered another set from him and the wax tryin was terrible. Awful..I had to accept he could not produce  a good product. It also bothered him athat I was making my own. wtf???

Eleanor I'm super pumped about joining your FB group! My sister & I both want to look like we did before dentures. I was in a car accident that killed the nerves in a lot of my teeth & just kept getting infections & having pain & finally almost 20 years ago had the top ones pulled & got an upper plate. It looked great! Fit well, looked good. I wish I had it back but I dropped it & broke it last winter. Went & got the bottom ones pulled & got a temporary full set from Affordable. The minute I put them in my mouth, my upper lip just caved in, curled inward & disappeared. I looked 20 years older in a split second. The bottom ones were fairly okay. I made do with them until I decided to try RK. Actually I'm still making do with them since I never got anything wearable from RK. We've researched & watched YouTube videos about how to not look like a little old lady with "denture face" and have talked about trying to make our own. You've given us hope! Thank you!

Constance, it is crystal clear why any vendor or service provider would give you a hard time with your rude attitude. Grow up.. You only make yourself look bad. At least others were kind enough to answer my questions honestly and in detail. You really are an absolutely rude piece of work. You certainly aren't worth wasting my time on as you clearly can't treat someone with even an ounce of respect or kindness unless they jump on your bandwagon. Save you salty attitude for someone else. I'm not the person you need to he speak9ng to thay way. Direct your anger appropriately, like an adult.

Eleanor, I can understand a snarky response directed at the right person. I didn't screw up her teeth or take her money. She posted a long diatribe but never said what she spent beyond being frustrated. I wanted to know what hidden expenses RK was asking for. Her directing her rude attitude at me is sadly misplaced. She needs to learn some etiquette.

Diane, I really don't think you're in a position to appoint yourself the spokeswoman for others who are commenting here. You were rude & I called you on it. You got the same kind of comment from me that I got from you. That's how things work, so just accept it & move on. My diatribe wasn't any longer than yours, which was obviously a shill for RK. Lol Busted! Now let it go.

Constance, you continue to make yourself look dumber with every post. I have never even ordered from RK. I have custom dentures that I paid $5000 for from a very very good dentist and was thinking of trying RK for an inexpensive backup pair, hence the reason I requested more details. You really are a piece of work. You can go on thinking you "called me out" but really you're sadly mistaken and look stupid and rude.

The  short story for me is I got independent of trying to get someone to make dentures for me no matter what price they asked. They were just not able. I am enjoying the group on Facebook, "Do your own dentures" and hopefully even more people will learn they can make their own dentures and as many sets as they want  after they gather their supplies. I like to do everything I can for myself and not  depend on others and I like to save my money so I do not have to  ask others for help. So I was blessed to go through those 'bad" experiences. They made me realize I can make my own. You will meet many people in that group who have been through a lot before they  learned that they can create their own dentures and be in charge and save money.

I wish there was a way for me to remove all of the positive things I have said because even though they were true I do not recommend him to anyone after the problems that I had when I was getting my partial. Or should I say never getting a partial that could be worn. I don't know what happened but I went from incredibly happy satisfied client to somebody who tells everybody not to bother with him and not to try to get anything out of him. He ripped me off to the tune of almost a $1000 I have nothing to show for it. No partial. No money back. And no communication from him. He has changed immensely over the last 2 years and I would not recommend any body go through.
