Soft Reline

So I'm about a week and a half post extractions.  Dentures were feeling okay, lots of rubbing still and I'm not supposed to use adhesive yet because obviosly I still have a ways to heal.

I went in today to have my stitches taken out and some sore spots addressed.  I let my destist know that the tops and bottoms both pop out when I talk, or do anything (yawn, think about something... you name it.)  So he decided to do the adjustments and just do a soft reline now.

NIGHT AND DAY Difference.  OMG.
1. They feel like a billion times smaller in my mouth.  Almost, natural?  I guess they'll never feel 100% natural but an amazing difference.
2.  They sucktion- both the top and the bottom.  I know it won't be forever because I still have a ton of shrinkage left.  But, at least for the time being, Nothing wiggles or pops out with just normal conversation.  I am even talking normal.  (Even my 's' and 'th'!)
3. They really are soft.  No rubbing.  Holy moly- what a difference.

I did ask if it wasn't a bit early since origionally we had planned a soft reline for a few months out.  According to him, they can really do it whenever, but if they do it this early, it just means they'll need to do it twice instread of once.  No big deal.  Only takes about a half hour.

I think if you're having a ton of pain or the denture feels way to big you should really talk to your dentist. There ARE solutions.  And if your dentist isn't listening, maybe it's time to find a new one.  I'm lucky to have such a good one.  From the beginning he's been wonderful.

This is our life now, but it doesn't have to suck.  Inevitably, it will sometimes, but for the most part, issues and be addressed and fixed.

Marcia: Agree. Good dentists address these issues quickly. There is also something magic about the 10-day mark. That's when I could start brushing my gums, and the healing gained momentum. I'm not there yet, even after 7 weeks, but I'm beginning to feel normal again.

I'm happy for you, since you were clearly distressed a week ago. Some apparently never get over that feeling, even after years. I have no idea why that is, but I know it's real. I remain convinced, however, that good dentists produce good outcomes the vast majority of the time.

That's what we have to hold onto, because this journey is tough enough, and it becomes impossible without a good dentist and a good outlook. You have both, and you're on your way. I am happy for you. Joseph

Thanks Joseph.  It was (and still is) hard sometimes.  But I had to face that this is the hand I've been delt and either grow from it and focus on being strong and happy or wallow in self pitty.  I try not to do that too much, although I do have my moments.  Those first four days were rough.

You made it through what some call "Hell Week" and it only gets better from here on out.  Yeah, there may be some tough days ahead.  I'm > 18 months out and just this past weekend my lower gum ridge hurt for some unknown reason?  I put on some Orajel on it and even ordered some Benzodent off Amazon [quit laughing Melanie - I told you I have "issues" :-) ] that a lot of people have found to be good.  The next day the irritation was gone.

My wife reminded me this weekend that when it comes to our mouths, ANYTHING feels MAJOR.  She had one of those little ulcers on the tip of her tongue that one can get from citrus and other acidic stuff and I heard all about it.

Glad you're doing better!

LOL...  someday we may meet in Shopaholics Anonymous?

It's supposedly very good for Dentures.  I used up all my Orajel.  The ingredients are the same but the consistency is more of a firm Gel that plays nicely with adhesives.  (So I am told by friends)

The Benzodent Dental Pain-Relieving Cream lets you enjoy reduced pain so you can get the most out of your day. It's designed to eliminate sore spots created by wearing dentures. This Bezodent cream has 20 percent Benzocaine to work quickly and effectively.Petrolatum Uses: For the temporary relief of pain due to minor irritation of the mouth and gums caused by dentures or orthodontic appliances or injury to mouth and gums.

Marcia, just this week I had a horrible situation with my dentist and my denture reline- the first one, soft reline, after two months.... The molds themselves were made in February and dentures not in until April. I AM dealing with the wrong dentist, and this whole ordeal has been a nightmare. I am really glad you, and others, have had such positive experiences. It's hard to determine the good ones, especially when you only have three to choose from through insurance. I've maxed out my policy for the year, but next year I will be getting quality dentures and NOT a company whose main concern is their bottom line. (Dollars) Hope all is still going great! Wish me luck!
