Sore spots from new bottom dentures - argh.....

It was put in as soon as my extractions were done. It's been 5 days now and it hurts so much to have them in. I was doing good the first day or so! I have a few stitches, lots of dead skin, quite a bit of swelling still. I was told to wear them at night to keep my gums forming to them correctly. I did the first night, but by the 2nd night it was far too uncomfortable and I could get no sleep. The pain is only when I wear these dentures. I have a couple of spots in particular that are SO sore when 1) I put in the denture and 2) while I'm wearing it. Question: am I screwing myself by not sleeping in them? I cannot :( My (wonderful) dentist said he wanted me to keep them in, but he also didn't want me to be miserable. What did you all do? I take them out a few times a day - sometimes leave them out for a half hour or so. I rinse with warm salt water. I take ibuprofen. Is this normal and, again, am I making things worse by taking them out?

I should add that I am not new to dentures. I have had uppers for 17 years and just got new ones - and am familiar with sore spots, etc. This having dentures put in as soon as extractions are done is what is new to me!

Hi EllenM, No you are not messing up by leaving them out overnight.  You should not have to be hurting.  Your sleep is more important than leaving them in.  I would wear mine as much as possible during the daytime and take them out to try to sleep.  The first few days is the worst and then after my 3rd day I was really swollen and my face was bruised.  You will have plenty of time when the gums are not so sore to have them form to the dentures.  My dentist had me keep them in for 24 hours straight and then wore them as much as possible and then after my stitches were out I tryed to wear them more.  I might add that he tweeked them and saw the sore spots and tryed to fix those when he took my stitches out.  Good Luck Ellen and welcome to the most helpful thing in the whole process.  These people here are either going through what you are or have just recently gone through it.  I am 9 weeks in and it is getting better, but still have a long way to go.

Thank you so much for the encouragement! I see my dentist tomorrow, and the surgeon on Tuesday. Perhaps they can help a little. I realize patience is very important here.
