I just want to take a minute to thank you all who have replied to my first post. It had gotten to the point that thinking about getting dentures consumed my day. I know it won’t be easy, but so far I haven’t stressed about the upcoming event once today. Impressions done next week, and I’m going to push to get the extractions and dentures as soon as possible.
Reading on this site has helped ease my mind, at least for now. So if you responded to me, thank you so much!

Starting to get a little nervous. The big day is four away. The impressions didn’t gag me, so maybe the dentures won’t either. I am imagining it will be painful. Taking halcion, I think anyway, an hour before. Hopefully will incapacitate me fairly well.

Just remember we were all where you are now, and we are here to help. This site helped me so much. Your dentist can do adjustments on your temporary denture to prevent gagging, just ask to have the palate trimmed back a little bit. A tiny bit will seem huge though. Good Luck keep us posted

The massive tray of gunk didn’t gag me. Hopefully the dentures won’t either. My nerves have me down today though. Got a REALLY BAD work week coming up. Month end summarizations to do. I can work it out from home. Just most likely going to feel like garbage while I do it.

Just another update. One more day before all my extractions. I’m almost at full panic. I can’t eat or sleep. I really thought I was doing better than this. I’m mortified about the fact this is happening so soon. I’m even throwing up. Feeling like I should have opted for a later date in order to have IV sedation. I’m not convinced this Halcion medication will do the trick. Guess it’s too late for that now. Absolutely stressed to the max.

Take a deep breath....you’re going to be okay! I was most nervous about the surgery, and I was asleep! Once that was over, it’s all been downhill for me. I’m so much happier and glad I did it! We’re all here for you!

Thank you. This support has been priceless for me. You all are golden! So far, I’ve only been sick once today. I’m planning on being awake most all night tonight. I should be very tired, and the sedative should work better. Also, you think headphones and music would help? Maybe not hear all the horrid sounds?

Good idea to stay up that way hopefully your body will crash by surgery time. My opinion, headphones and music would be a great thing even if you do go to sleep. Looking forward to finding out how you’re doing post surgery. You got this!!

I actually asked them to give me my teeth back. I wanted something to look at to see where I was and where I am now. I looked at them after I left the surgeon on my way to the dentist and I haven’t needed to look at them again. Everyone deals with this process differently.
My dentist is the only one that has a before picture and I can’t stand to look at them so eventually I’ll only be doing an after picture lol.

I have always had trouble with my teeth. Seeing the condition they are in currently made me realize I’m making the right choice. I’ll be smiling at my wife for the first time in over a decade this time tomorrow. That’s huge. Granted, it may be a “not so flattering, vampire-like, bloody smile”, but a smile nonetheless.
I have been very short tempered with her tonight, and I feel terrible about that. I just hope she can kinda understand why I’m not all sunshine and rainbows.

My problems started in the last 4-5 years and gradually got worse. My dentists kept telling me to brush more and take better care of them. No one cared to try and find another problem until I met my prosthodontist who told me it’s likely due to my medicine giving me dry mouth. The decay on my teeth just continued getting worse despite my 2x a day brushing and Listerine. I knew that I couldn’t keep going the way I was and knew I just needed to buckle down and do it.
I smile every chance I get and my husband told me the other day it’s nice to see me smile again. For so long I’ve smiled with my mouth closed as much as possible. The “not so flattering smile” will gradually become a fantastic smile before you know it!!
I’m sure she understands why you’re feeling the way you are and is ready to help you and support you on this new journey together!

Wow, our stories are similar. Mine also went downhill quick in the last three years. Right after I started taking a new medication! Less saliva, but what little I have is quite acidic. Not good for my existing dental work. All fillings are gone now. And the pain is for real.
Terrible for my profession. I travel often and and I’m one of the first new faces for new customer. Pain in the @ss having to hide my teeth all the time.

Well with your dentures, be prepared to welcome the saliva back. It’s especially gross the first few days.
Luckily, I never experienced any pain. I have no idea how. I even had an abscess and it never bothered me except for some slight swelling at times.

You can have sedation just call and change your appt. or don't eat tomorrow am and call them in the morning and tell them u have changed your mind.  Stand firm no need for you to feel this way.  Sedation is they way to go.

They don’t have anyone on site that does sedation. Those appts are few and far between. Honestly, I’ve had this pain too long now as it is.

Charlie, I very carefully and emphatically explained to my dentist that I was terrifically phobic about needles in my gums.  He assured me that he would be slow and careful.  He used Lidocain instead of Novocain.  He was right, out of I don't know how many injections I got, I only felt two minor pricks as he did it.

Hey guys. I have planned to be as open and honest as possible about my mouth remodel. Hopefully, someone as scared as me will read this someday and see that if I could do it, they can too. Trust me, I’m as much of a big baby as anyone.
I’m 2 hours away from surgery right now. I’m so shaky I can barely hold a cup of water. I’ve only had a few hours of sleep. I already asked my wife if I can chicken out (she said no). I’ve been physically sick. All that said, I’m still doing it.
I’m not sure how long it will take, but I’m ready to move on to a new chapter. One without toothache, fillings, root canals and a mouth full of gauze. One where I don’t have to worry about something being too funny and opening my mouth. Let’s hope for the best.

Being open and honest in a forum like this one, especially with the topics we discuss, is important. Whether it’s to help someone else or even help yourself by putting what you’re feeling into words instead of speaking them to family or friends who may not understand.
I’m glad she’s not letting you chicken out! Just get it done and over with so you can start the healing process! That was my motto.
Surgery was the most nerve racking for me. I was almost in tears when they put the IV in my arm and then I was out.
Don’t try and rush the healing process. Everyone heals differently. I healed and bounced back much quicker and easier than I thought I would.
You definitely have the right outlook and are looking forward by telling yourself you’re ready to be rid of everything bad and be able to smile again! I find myself smiling in a mirror every chance I get!
Best of luck and I’m looking forward to reading how you’re doing!

Ok. Been home for about 3 hrs now. What an experience. My jaw teeth were very, very stubborn. Took so long I just finished the bottom right side after I wasn’t numb anymore. I guess they maxed my out on numbing, so it was either suck it up or go home unable to wear my dentures. So I sucked it up, then, and cried all the way home. My dentist was awesome, and I’d get her flowers if my wife wouldn’t get mad. After we were all aware I was feeling all the pain, she was as gentle as she could be.

Swelling- yep, I got plenty. I actually feel like I’ve been punched in the face. But my jaw was held open for forever, so expected.
Bleeeding - nothing bad.
Extraction site pain -0
I’ve drank some water. Ice cold for the first time since the 90’s.
I smiled my smile at my wife to see if I still got it. I still do.
Fit - top full fits ok. Stays in. I don’t even own adhesive yet.
Bottom Partial - sucks. Hate it. Even secured to real teeth, comes off every time I open my mouth. I’ll need to get that sorted.
Any questions please don’t hesitate to ask

Glad to read you’re doing pretty good so far! I couldn’t imagine being awake so major kudos to you for sticking it through!! I have full on top and bottom and my bottom moves a lot but from everything I’ve read that’s normal starting out. I’m looking forward to adhesive especially for the bottom so the movement stops. Try and get some rest tonight.

Good for you, Charlie.  Send flowers to your dentist, make em from you and you wife.  Ice packs can be your best friend right.  Congrats on drinking ice cold water.  You are now in the worst of it.  Yes, there will be swelling and pain, but you will improve day to day!

My bottom partial will not stay in. Even with the maximum swelling, I barely move my tongue and they fall off. They are supposed to secure to existing teeth. These don’t even feel like they should be mine. The part that hooks on my teeth doesn’t even do so with any pressure.

I’m a little worried about that. They said just take them out if they don’t fit. Really??? I paid this much to take them out?

The concern for the happy customer seems less after they cashed the check.
The top fits well. Not slipping at all. The bottom partial doesn’t match up at all. It literally just sits on my gums. The little parts that hold on to the teeth, don’t touch the teeth at all

For all but the six bottom front. Hooks onto the canine. Just the hooks are larger diameter than my canines

Okay so those "hooks" that support your teeth are called clasps. If you do have them and they are metal they can be tightened to support your teeth and improve the stability. You demand to get in there and have them do so. It takes like 2 min for them to do that.

Here we are. About 26 hours after surgery. Pain from swelling is pretty intense now. I let them go a little crazy pulling the last few. Now I’m paying.
Going to take a shower now, take these out and give my tongue a break.

Almost 48 hours past D day. SOOOO MUCH SWELLING! It was pretty difficult removing some of my old teeth, so I suppose looking like I’ve been punched all over my face is normal. Very tender. I’ve been eating apple sauce. And ensure. Going to have to go back Monday morning for sore spots with the partial. That one actually hurts. A lot. The top full is fine. Still fits well. Only sore spots are from the many many injection sites. More of an inconvenience than pain.

Today and tomorrow should be the peak for your swelling and then it will get better. Hopefully you can advance to better soft foods soon. Scrambled eggs and mashed potatoes are also good. Keep it up! You’re doing awesome!

After about a day I had to have something that wasn’t jello or applesauce. I was starving! Even though I mainly had to put the eggs on the roof of my mouth and mash them and then swallow.

Slightly melted sherbet is really good. I was so worried about the top. Was afraid they would be flopping around. Even the dentist said I’d love the partial, because they stay put. Boy they missed that one.

So I wore my dentures all night on day 1. Didn’t wear my partial last night. Thinking about going full naked gums tonight. Is there a chance my remaining teeth could hit my gums? I imagine that would hurt very bad.
