THINK Twice About It!

I have scanned and read through many of the comments here and one that needs to be repeated is this.   THINK TWICE before allowing them to pull your teeth if they are not hurting you.  When a dentist told me a tooth had to go, I let them pull it even though it wasn't hurting.   It never occurred to me (and I didn't do my research) the value of a real tooth.  I simply thought you replace them and move on.   NOT TRUE.   If the tooth is not hurting you OR harming your system, then basically dentures COSMETIC.   And you can find great flippers or "Hollywood" ways to cover up the ugly that will be just as easy to eat with.  The BOTTOM line is that BOTTOM dentures DO not work.  And one adhesive is just as useless as the next.   If I sound angry, it is because I am.  Angry at myself for not doing full research and trusting dentist.

Just had them removed on Monday, The dentist said I could never get the fit I needed with the bottom 4 in the front  being there. I have a extensive gum disease. so now I have a full plate on the top and a temp plate on the bottom. I am getting used to the bottom, but the top plate is doing well. I also have a awesome dentist so that might be the plus to my situation.

lamont.....when you say you are getting use to the bottoms...what do you mean?   are they clacking?  I know when I first got my bottom partial, I had to have it adjusted a couple of times and then it worked fairly well but only for a brief time (about 8 months) and then I took it in for an adjustment and they told me that my gums had simply shrunk and to just deal with it.   btw...how many teeth did you have pulled at one time and if you don't mind sharing your age and general health.   I am 57 and have some health issue and as Patti stated below they would not pull more than 4 teeth at a time on her.   Thanks for the post.

It sounds like we are in similar situations.  I have seven left on the bottom and wear a partial that has yet to stay in place through an entire meal .  I am missing all my back teeth for about 4 years now so very little gum.

The worldwide view is that bottom dentures sucks.  I have an appointment with a specialist next week to see if they can be saved.   I have been told NO by 3 other Docs but I don't take NO for an answer.   Did you go with straight dentures..........or some implant or mini implant?   Keep me posted on how those bottoms stay in and what you are using to keep them in.    Happy chomping.   OH..btw.are you getting that chomp or click sound while talking?

I had pretty much the same as you...six teeth left on the bottom, lost all bottom side/back long ago, they were bad and decayed at the base and broke off or totally fell out. When my top started to break off it was time to remove all of them and get full dentures. Well the denist would not pull all at the same time because I have high blood pressure so had two or three at a time done, which took over a month. Have been without any teeth for 2 weeks now and just got my dentures today. What can is sigh....the teeth look really good, right size and color, I am very happy with that. The bottom fit pretty good, after wearing them for a couple of hours I dont even notice I am wearing them...so thats good, I do think the left side is too thick. especially on the inside of my mouth, i cant even feel the denture with my tongue on the right side but the left is noticable, almost pressing on my tongue.
The top however sucks....it doesnt match my bite right on the left side. When i had the molds made and she had me bite down she said they lining up with the bottom up too forward...so i bit again with my lower jaw back a bit and they actually felt better and she said oh thats good...and made the mold. Now with the dentures i can tell that the origional bite was my correct bite...maybe not for everyone but was for me. Now the top is loose, clanks some, and i keep bitting my upper lip because of it.
I have not tried any adhesive, was told not needed this soon. I could not eat with them, felt like the food was going to slide to the back of my throut and choke...and i couldnt get the chewing it was too weird,  was soft food too.
I am going to call the denist tomorrow but not sure if she can do anything...i think the top needs to be remade...dont know if they willl do that. I did put them back in cuz i read it was good to wear them at night for a few nights to get used to them....i am praying i do....cuz if they continue to feel like this i would rather go without any lol     If anyone has any suggestions or tips please please let me know....thank you

Patti....Unfortunately I don't have a suggestion at the moment...but I do thank you for sharing your information as I got a couple of important points out of it.   The current plan is to pull all seven lower teeth at one time.  I too have high blood pressure and other health issues and was worried about having so  many teeth pulled at one time but the various dentists I visited seemed like it was no big deal.  PLUS...what I am learning is that your denture maker is about the most important person in this process.   I have an upper and lower partial and I recall when the assistant took my impressions she seemed disorganized and I never considered the long term effects.

I would offer this bit of advice Patti especially when dealing with something like Medi-Cal.......DON'T take NO for an answer.   If they screwed something up and you are not happy and they continue to refuse to work with you....simply call and speak to your Medi-Cal ombudsman or put in a complaint and stay on top of it.

Thanks for posting and for the valuable information.   I am 57 and just realized about 10 years ago that Doctors don't always have the right answer, in fact it is a guessing game for them too.

Patti..............Thanks so much for the update.   Best news????  NO pain.   I have been there in a couple of situations and no one understands the multiple effects of pain until you have a chronic wave of it.   It has a domino effect that reaches to every aspect of daily living.   Is FIVE adjustments common?   What is actually done?   Is it more of a hassle of just getting there?   And will the reline be (hopefully) the last visit?

Here in Dallas I am getting ready to go see my 6th dentist/oral surgeon/prosthodontics.  I am mind goggled at the expense of implants and the multiple hidden cost that you can only find out if you keep asking questions.   I am looking to get dentures implanted.  Currently I have an upper and lower partial and have a total of 13 real teeth top and bottom.  And at this point the teeth are not causing any pain even though the bottom ones look crappy, I am not sure I want to put myself through the full denture adventure at this point.   As you know it is a huge jump.

I find that many people, like myself, have a slight mistrust of dentist and the work they provide as they seem to be in a constant state of up sales. We always wonder if the work they are suggesting really needs to be done or does the Doc need a new boat?   And the price range on the SAME DAMN denture implant procedure has ranged from $8,000 to $55,000.   And when I ask the $55,000 Doc ...why so much higher?  The answer....You get what you pay for.   Well I can see how that might exist with a used car but when we are talking health procedures, I assumed there was some sort of ethical and medical code of conduct that EVERY Doc should be qualified.   Why should consumers pay tens of thousands more to get something done right?

Plus, while I am btching and moaning..........here is Dallas there seems to be this semi bait and switch going on.   Most advertise something called Mini Dental implants that is suppose to be a "less invasive" "less expensive" way of getting implants.   Yet every time I go to a Dentist and ask about it, I am told, it is no good, I don't want it, it doesn't last long, just used as a temporary, and I wouldn't be happy.   But they are certain I would be happy with the full 15 thousand dollar upper ad 20 thousand dollar lower.   OH an by the way that doesn't include the DENTURE for which you must go see another Doctor.....who will then send it out to another Lab.

Oy vey.......I should write a book.

Oy vey.......I think I just did.

Please keep us posted.

Peace,

Jack

BTW....I may give this Stabledent a try once I get clear on the money back guarantee.

Hi Jack, We will give you your money back if you are having issues. I would call the office and ask specifically what Brent can do for you. He has been working with dentures for years and developed Stabildent in hopes that everyone would be able to experience comfortable dentures. Also, we just lowered our price for the Stabilizers to $54.95. 1-406-257-5283
Talk to you soon!

Jack you made me laugh. You are right to do your homework. Cheap usually is not good but dentists charges have skyrocketed. Implants are very expensive and take a long time to complete. Main suggestion I have is to make sure you get several good recommendations for the dentist you select. It's a bumpy road and you have to have faith that in the end all will be best it can be.

Jack I would like to add they will recommend you have a backup denture in case you break it or have to send it out for repairs. As for implants my late uncle  had them in the bottom they worked fine but he would have to go in once or twice a year to have the bushes or washers replaced or tightened ,but he said it was worth it. My dentist said the top will stay in by suction.

I agree with your original post, to a certain extent. Teeth are far more valuable than I had ever thought in my younger years, and you need to do a lot of research before taking that plunge and make sure you trust your dentist.

However my uppers were going one by one due to bone loss, I'd had expensive gum surgery to try and stop the bone loss, and after three opinions two years ago that all said they will have to come out, I finally did it recently when another back tooth failed. I had only lost back teeth so I had told myself I'd wait until a front tooth failed before I had them all removed. Then the familiar pain started in another molar and I just went ahead and had 15 uppers removed. It's been hard but I'm glad I did it. I don't have this constant anxiety as to when is a front tooth going to go and my dental phobia is nearly gone. I'm glad it's over. I'm sorry you've had regrets. I'm not happy about the situation in general but it was the right decision for me.

Jack, I had five abscesses that did not hurt, but were poisoning my system. I had same situation as Stephanie, fear of the next tooth breaking off is really torture. At least that episode in life is over. I find dealing with adhesive and limited eating far less stressful. I hung on to every tooth I had as long as possible. That period was
4 1/2 years.......damaging years to my body. I was recently diagnosed with Lupus. Did the stress cause Lupus? Did the poison going thru my system cause or worsen the Lupus? This is not a simple problem in our lives but at least here we have support.

There is an expensive option for poorly fitting bottom dentures that everyone has trouble with. Dental implants for dentures. I had all my teeth extracted and had 3 implants placed in my lower jawbone to snap my lower plate onto. They were expensive though..... $2800 each Implant. But, my lower teeth are going to be more like real teeth that don't move at all.

This is exactly what I'm planning to do. I received a cosmetic dentistry grant that will pay more than half and I'm responsible for the balance.

What is a cosmetic dental grant? and how did you get it? I have spent thousands of dollars to these criminal dentists and their ridiculous fees. Plus I have Aetna dental, who denies every claim. It is a disgrace that the dental industry is not regulated and these crooks charge whatever they want. I'm in the dentist's chair for 20 minutes and my bill is $1500. After all my money was taken, problem after problem in my mouth. The front veneer of a crown came off, so the tooth is black. My dentist tells me I have 2 options, #1 - A new crown to the tune of $1200., my out of pocket is $900. or bonding the tooth for $500. He then states the bonding may last an hour, a day, a week or a month or maybe a year. So if he bonds it and it comes off the next day I'm out 500 bucks. Why are these criminals not held accountable for their work? If you have a new transmission put in your car and it stops working after a day, the shop is required to fix it without charging you more money. Why are dentists not held accountable for their work? The entire dental industry is a scam and we are the suckers. I read an article where it said dentists on average now make more money per year than doctors! Why? because Doctors are regulated, you pay your co-pay and that's it. These Crooks need to be regulated and controlled. As Jerry Seinfeld once said, " Ya know what a dentist is? Someone who flunked out of medical school! it was a joke but he may be right.. Sorry for the rant but I have had it with these greedy criminals.

I wish I had thought twice. It seems like a eugenics program.
I wouldn't have done it if the dentist had briefed me. I am the world's worst idiot for trusting him to tell me what I needed to know. I am doubtful I will survive long.

I fully agree with Jack. My partner has ugly but healthy teeth, and his dentist doesn't recommend any replacement/dental implants/dentures until teeth don’t hurt

Lisa Crow - A few of my family members have undergone their teeth implants procedures at overseas clinics, as it was much cheaper. If you google you would find a few services dentalimplantsfriends/dentalimplantcostguide that list realible overseas dental centers with detailed info/stats on them. You would also find tips to help find the right clinic abroad
