when will the pain stop?

I had all my teeth pulled a week ago. Immediate dentures were done. Dentist took the tops out yesterday with no issues, bottom wouldn't come out. Went to the oral surgeon he got the bottoms out but they wouldn't go back in. The pain is intense. I don't have the bottoms in and go back tomorrow. I can feel a bump on my bottom gum line feels like bone. I'm beginning to feel like I'm nuts.

I have done ice, salt water rinsing and ibuprofen. It just keeps throbbing. I went back to the dentist he said just don't wear the bottom ones. I never thought this would be so painful I can't chew anything and yogurt, potatoes, applesauce, ice cream is getting pretty old. If my gums didn't feel so raw I would feel so much better. At least its only the left side that is so painful

I'm glad they found the problem. I wish they might have thought, "hmmm, perhaps it's ulcers?" That is what I don't understand. I guess they know it will hurt, and I know some people have low tolerance for pain, but, most might have a real problem. I see it was 4 weeks ago, so is it better? I'm just on my 4 th day. My dentist is nice. The staff just told me to keep them in no matter what. Glad I found this site. Patients usually know more. I hope you're feeling great in no time. Feel better.

ice cream, yogurt. Scrambled eggs. Soup but not too hot. Cottage cheese, mashed potatoes and over cooked carrots oatmeal. Also ensure or similar shake. That's pretty much what I lived on the first few weeks. Take it slow. Also drink a lot of water. Do you have them in or out now?

Never thought if cottage cheese. I only have the tops in. The oral surgeon said to leave the bottoms out until I see the dentist on Tuesday. This is horrible. Thank you so much for advise.

This week, my lower teeth were pulled and dentures were put in. I have been in a world of pain and getting really hungry. It is Christmas time, and everyone is chowing down, but I needed something really soft to eat! Last night, I had an idea for something that filled me up, and tasted very good to me.
English Pea Salad: Very easy to make, just use mayonaise, sweet relish, finely chopped onion, and shredded cheese. Stir it all up and add a bit of black pepper/salt to taste.  Another item I have been able to consume a bit of is Stovetop Stuffing.

If you want more "real food" you can crumble sausage in gravy and put it over biscuits or toast and eggs Sloppy joes, hamburger helper, chili are some good options too. You can "eat" a lot of stuff if you get creative. Eat stuff that you can mash against the top plate or the roof of your mouth... stuff where chewing is optional.

Ken, I'm not ready yet, but when I can, my son promised to take me to a buffet. He doesn't care for them, but I love them. I've done alot of cooking over the years. My eyes bug out when I have that much food in front of me that I didn't have to cook. But, I'm sick. Ever since surgery, I've had sore throat and sometimes a fever. I was on strong antibiotics but still feel terrible today. Must be something else, but I don't want it to slow down my progress. Gotta get to that buffet. Have a good day.

Went back to the dentist yesterday. Ugh no luck with the bottom plate. Still have the ulcers and I need more healing time. Tried to put them in but it's painful. Getting discouraged.

Don't get discouraged Mike! Let your gums rest and the blood circulate, that will help your recovery. Hang in there. YOU CAN DO IT!!!

mike, I think anyone would be discouraged with what you have going on. We promise it will get better. You may need additional time to heal. Did your dentist have any suggestions on how to best treat the ulcers?

No he didn't give me any suggestions for the ulcers. They are all on the left side , on top of my gums, the outside, and the front of my gums. I go back to the oral surgeon tomorrow. I have a bone sticking out on the left also. I tried again today to get the bottom in but to painful it just don't go over the bone and my gums hurt. Tops are getting better, the roof of my mouth gets sore by night time.

Mike, they've told me that my mouth is not aligned right. Right jaw goes left and lower jaw protrudes out. And my mouth is small. So they will eventually(if I can afford it) get me smaller dentures. But , my doctor said let it rest now. And they are working on my dentures , grinding them where they hurt. They told me to keep them in under all circumstances...I think that was a mistake. May 1st or 2nd, and then they should look at them. Dental employees have great teeth. They have no idea the pain. I hope the put you out when the do surgery. I did. Didn't really ever sleep though.

Mike, I just noticed that you were having surgery on 22nd, today is 26th...so how do you feel? Hope you don't mind me asking. I've come to find that everyone seems to have different reactions, but those who had them(dentures) for awhile, seem to have great results. I was able to keep mine in all day Sat. but then Sun. I hurt. So I guess we all heal differently. Plus, I have a swollen gland and sore throat on left. So I guess that will set me back. So, I hope for you that now you will be able to heal soon too. The other day I was at grocery and something funny was said and I smiled at the guy!! That was a first. So that is what is keeping me going. Except when I cancelled a fitting for tomorrow(since I'm sick-have fever too) the receptionist hung up on me. She's friendly-just a bit high strung. But, normally-I would not go back to a doctor, even if I loved him. And the doctor I do!! So kind!! But, I'm stuck I have to go back. But, the staff is nice. The other day one girl even though she was SO BUSY spent 3 hours getting mine to fit better. Oh I talk to much..must be the fever. Sorry. Hope you and others new to this, are well .

Theresa, of course I don't mind you asking. My surgery was the 22, it was suppose to take an hour 2 hours later........he found more bone spurs and decided to do them, back to a mouth full of stitches, I am so sore, hungry, discouraged. I don't like to sound so negative but damn..........I went back yesterday and he is pleased with the way my gums look. He's hoping I won't have to have another surgery. To be honest I don't think I would. I have taken mine out I am getting ulcers on my gums again. The dr. Said whatever makes it more comfortable to do that. I'm hoping once the stitches dissolve it will be better. I understand not smiling I have a hard time with that. Some receptionist just don't get it. I have to say where I'm going they are wonderful I am so very grateful. Don't ever think you talk too much. No need to apologize. Feel better my friend and keep smiling. Hope all are well.

Dang, that must smart!!! I was told to keep mine in like I guess everyone else, all day, if I could. Even sleep with them. And these things cost so much, I really don't want to mess them up, but like I said I had a fever or two and it would get till I shook from the pain. I said, that's it!! So I'd took them out and would put them back in later and back and forth. Having them grind them down where the sore spots were(and I had ulcers too) helped a great deal. One girl is kinda quick and the other took 3 hours for me. But, they are a busy office. But, by NOT leaving them in has made it alot better to keep them in longer as time goes by. Now, everyone is different, but if I was getting sores from them, so that I was in pain and the sores couldn't heal, it didn't make sense to me to leave them in so long. So they took my stitches out a little more than week and that was when they spent 3 hours trying to get them to fit me better-boy did I hurt...BUT the next day things turned around. So, I am glad I found this site because, hearing from others that there is light at the end of the tunnel, helps. I mean of course the doctor will say that, I want to hear from others. But, also, by hearing what others are doing and going through helps. Gives me some tips. I really don't think they know at the doctors office how much this can really hurt. Unless they went through it themselves, of course. Now, I am hoping they will give me more pain pills but too embarressed to ask. They have been good about it. But when they say to take them every 4-6 hours,, I would be watching the clock and never made it to the 6th hour. My husband says I'll get addicted, Don't want that..but what do they make the pills for . Other than that I take 4 Motrin. When I take they out, I still do hurt but it is more like a dull pain..I can handle that. Just getting tired of it. But, I know you must really be tired of it. So I have had them in today for just alittle while( again just because I'm sick) but this is just to get used to them, because in a bit I will take them out again.ahhhh....

Theresa Benoit-derry, thank you for the nice comments about our forum members. Don't forget that at the same time, YOU are also helping others at the same time. Glad to hear your pain is getting a little better, but if you need an extension on your medication, I wouldn't hesitate to ask your dentist. It is a lot harder to get pain to stop than it is to keep it under control, that's for sure. Hang in there!

That sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing. 1 week ago today. Top gum keeps rubbing bottom gum where extraction was done causing bone to cut thru skin. Extremely painful. Top, still one bad spot, seeing dentist tm.

I went through the same thing over a year ago. I eventually lost almost 40lbs because I couldn't eat. And what I could eat tasted horrible. But, now I feel like the old me. I never even notice the dentures. They feel like they are apart of me. It will come to you also. But it will suck bad, for awhile.

Yep..it is. Stacie if I lose 40 lbs and can smile...it will be SO worth this pain. Thanks for words of encouragement. Almost afraid to ask though...how long from start to finish, did it take to feel "normal" again. I think I'll be ok if I have an idea. Even if its a couple of months.(Hope not..but at least I'll know it might take longer than I thought).
