When can I expect to interact after getting new dentures

Well, tomorrow is the big day. I've already had all my back teeth extracted. Now the remaining front come out under sedation and temp dentures put in. I go back the following day and he will remove for the first time. I am supposed to leave them in until he takes them out. I am also getting 6 mini implants which won't come into play until next august.

I am nervous but also so tired of the toothaches for the last couple of years.

My big question is I deal with lots of people, when will I be able meet and communicate. I hear all these folks talking about not talking well, dentures loose etc and that's a little scary

Woooo Hooooo Day 10 - That's double digits! Hard to believe its been 10 days, I am thankful. Got up and made pancakes and sausage for breakfast. Poor wife has been living with my soft food diet (her choice) so thought I would make her a treat. Pancakes are pretty easy to eat and I was able to actually chew the sausage. Only a new denture wearer can appreciate the joy. No pain whatsoever, dentures fit surprisingly well given I have blue plastic ridges above the gums to protect the implants. I have not used any adhesive yet.

Think we will have a great Sunday, heading back to church and be thankful all day!

Day - 11 All seems to be going well. No pain and I am able to eat more. Had Lasagna for dinner last night and it is a easy to eat food, not hard to chew and very easy to chew and swallow. I did do multiple salt water rinses yesterday and maybe that is helping.

Day 12 - Still have problems speaking clearly. I have started meeting with clients and I am very self conscious about not speaking clearly. I sound like I've had a few drinks and I don't drink. Oh well, it's easy to say I have some dental work done and nuff said.

Day 13 - Doing pretty well. In the routine of removing and cleaning my dentures and putting them back in. The longest I have had them out is 45 minutes and it was hard to put them back. My journey seems different than some here in that my dentist wants me to leave them in during the night to protect the implants. They don't bother me, that is sleeping with them. I'm doing ok as far as eating, no steak for me, probably until next summer when everything is done.

On the plus side I have lost about ten pounds so far, that's a good thing!

Glad you're doing so well! I think I'd have been tempted to hold some bacon in my mouth just to taste it, lol. I wonder why you've lost weight, seems like you've been eating regularly, huh?

I'm thinking it might be easier to eat for you because the implants hold the denture in more securely! Thats why I can't wait to get implants on the botom!! Good for you!!!!! Have a good weekend!

WOW!!!! Bill, I am very impressed! Wish I could eat more. The top dentures are fine and most (not all) discomfort on bottom is gone. But when I try to chew they move and I can't eat like that! I am getting 2 implants and then overdentures but that can't start till March after a little more healing! They are saying permanent dentures, implants and overdentures probably won't be complete till August,(sigh) That seems so far away!!! I also lost a few pounds, guess there is a bright side, lol! Congrats. on your success!

Day 21 cont'd All the stitches are out, Yeah! Small adjustment to my uppers due to a sore spot on my gum, nothing on the lowers. I am to continue sleeping with my dentures and stay on a soft diet as to not compromise my implants. Dentist advised my gums are healing nicely but 3 more weeks of soft food is best, he feels the six weeks after getting the implants is the critical time for optimum healing. My next appointment is not until June 11th.

Glad to get updates that everyone is doing well. Wow, Bill, next appointment not till June 11th! At least it's something to look forward to. As far as eating steak goes, I can pass on that since it is ridiculously expensive and not always as good as you expect it to be. Call me simple, but I love the chopped steak and gravy served at Piccadilly's. It never fails to satisfy my need for meat!

Saw my new dentist agains yesterday, had scaling and root planing done, no problems there. Seems I won't have to lose all of my teeth, which is a relief and will have something to hang my dentures on! Looking forward to getting the rest of the work underway and would like to be completed by Mardi Gras, since my husband and I will be In New Orleans again this year for about 1 week, through the holiday. (wondering if I will be able to handle a muffeletta, but won't push the issue).

Best wishes to all!

Hello Elizabeth, good new to hear you can keep some of your teeth, my guess then is you will be getting a partial?

I love a good steak, heck my son even owns the best steakhouse in our town. Hard to beat a good Rib-eye, my favorite cut. If he didn't own the place I couldn't afford it either. He used to get so mad that I would always order a chicken fried steak (cheapest on the menu) and I liked it the best.

I would love to see a Mardi Gras, it's on the bucket list for me!

Glad you are doing so well!

I haven't had it done yet, haven't had the time to spend recovering, etc. Been trying to finish this online course I'm taking. Since I'll have to be going out of town for the dental work, I need to open up a lot more time on my calendar than I have now.

Good to hear that this procedure is still on your ''calendar'' though... Yes, it is a process, & having the work done will bring much relief too, and recovery time is ''very minimal''.... It'll be ''soft foods'' for a few weeks and perhaps some ''weight loss'', which for me, was a blessing! Well, keep me updated when you get this all done... Good Luck in your ''online class''....

Just a quick update, I continue to do very well, I still have the blue plastic over the top implants but it has broken off over the bottom implants. I am past the point (6 weeks) where the dentist felt they were vulnerable to failure. The bottom plastic broke off last week so it has been a challenge to eat with the denture wobbling around on top of the implants, adhesive lasts a very short time since they are so wobbly, not sure that's a word. I have an appointment this Tuesday for a reline and hopefully get it to fit better. I am scheduled for new impressions in June and final dentures that mate up with the implants in August, long time to go yet.

What exactly is the plastic over the implants?? How did it break off? The reason I am asking is because I go May 5th for 2 implants on the bottom. I want to know what others are experiencing so I can know what to expect! Right now with my temp. bottom dentures can't eat and after 4 hrs. they just flop out!! Horrible!! Keep me updated, and I will do the same! Thanks Bill! Kathy

Kathy, I'm pretty sure it's a little, plastic cap to protect the implant, kinda cushion it I guess while it gets situated in there. Is that right, Bill?

The plastic is like a blue putty that he places over the gum and implants and then they shine some type of light and it hardens in place, I forget what he calls it.

Thought I would give you guys an update. Next Thursday I will get my permanent dentures. Been almost a year since the process started. I have had very few issues even with the temporary dentures but looking forward to getting finished up. I am having a stainless steel bar fitted on top of or attached to the implants and the dentures will them snap onto the bar. Thought you might appreciate what the implants look like. The pano xray was with the very long abutments attached for getting the final impressions so that are much longer than what is usually screwed in.

This entire process has been long but it has been so much easier than I had thought it would be. I would do this again in a heart beat. Great to never have a toothache again!

The new abutments are adjustable to straighten everything out and the bar attaches to the implant abutments. My dentist says I will be able to eat corn on the cob when done! Even with the temps I can eat anything I want, even steak. The actual implant (threaded into my jaw bone) has really bonded and the dentist says he couldn't get them out even if he tried, it has really healed and bonded well.

Looks like Frankenstein mouth!

Total bust last thursday, thought I was getting done, found out the lab was not pleased with the previous impressions, Got new upper abutments and lots of new impressions. I now go back 8/15/2014 for additional impressions. The future is for additional impressions. Can I say I am tired of impressions!

Just an update, day 575 +/- not really sure anymore.  I am supposed to get my final delivery next Friday  the 13th. It has been quite the extended ride. My dentist had issues with the bar for bottom. They seemed to have an alignment problem and have redone the lower bar 3 times. Last visit (a month ago) the bar finally went in and they did more impressions and are having the lower denture made. The upper has been done for some time now. My dentist had said 1 1/2 years so just a little over. I am excited to get my final denture, it has been ok with the temps but I have broken teeth, lost one and had it replaced, cracked the lower and I have learned to repair and dremel them several times. Gorrila super glue seems to work the best but be careful it will tint and discolor. Will do another update when finished.

Thanks for the ''update'' ... I have a friend who got dentures in November.. She too is going to have the ''lowers'' done like you have... I've told her that it's a longer process, from what I've read on your posts... Good Luck on Friday... Hope you are finally done too...It's definitely been a ''Journey'' ....

Well, I AM DONE!

My finals are in and it's over. Turns out the tops are screwed in permanently and the bottoms clip to a metal bar. The top has a completely open palette and stay in all the time. The dentist advised me to get a waterpik and care for them as they were my own. I can remove the bottoms and soak them overnight. I forgot to ask if I should be using a special toothpaste for the tops. Unless I have something happen I go back for annual cleanings, can you believe it?

Anyway, thanks for all the support throughout this journey, and I wish you all the very best experience with dentures, it's a piece of cake!

Good For You Bill.... It has been a long journey for you....I would guess you can resume using the same ''toothpaste'' you usually use on your gums, right?  I wish I was a candidate for the same procedure, but I had ''bone loss'', which eliminates me.. But, that is ''Life'' and we go on with it... Patti, hang in there... Keep updating too... Good Luck Bill & Patti.... ''Dee''
