List households within a shape.

I have imported a list of household locations then subdivided the mapped area into zones using shapes. Is there a procedure to create a list of households within each shape?

  • Not directly. You could use the selection tool to select all of the households in an area and then add a property to indicate the neighborhood. Hold down the shift key when you click the select button and then you can draw an irregular shape. This will select the households in that neighborhood. Choose view/edit. If you aleady have a neighborhood property you can then enter the neighborhood code in it or create a neighborhood property and then enter the code. This will enter that code just for the households selected. Repeat the process until you have coded all of your households. Select all of the households and include the neighborhood code as one of your hover text elements. Now when you go into Manage you can enter a neighborhood code in the filter field and just those households will be selected.

Hope that helps. If that isn't clear please ask for additional clarification.

  • I held down the shift key when I clicked the select button but I found I had to continue to hold it while I drew the irregular shape. To end the shape I double-clicked it. This brought up a "Manage Contents" window and on top of it a "Shape - user drawn Properties" window.

I found I should close the Shape window as I'm not going to use it. In the "Manage Contents" window, each of the households within the selections are checked. So then I use its View/Edit to add a Property to all of the households that are checked.

View/Edit opens a window "Properties for 22 elements (showing values for a Single family dwelling)" with the "Set properties" button already selected. At the bottom was "Property name:" to which I entered "Zone" and in the drop down list box I selected "Number" and then clicked Add Properties. This added Zone to the list of properties with it's value field blank. I then entered "8" because the shape included all household icons within my shape "Zone 8" and then clicked Apply and OK to close the window. Then I closed the "Manage Contents window too.

Now when I click any of the households within the zone, they have this new Zone property with a value of 8.

So this process works. Next I have to see if I can export all the zones to create a csv file with all the households and their respective zone numbers.

  • Glad to hear it worked for you. You should be able to export all of the households to a csv file and they should have the zone field which then you can then sort on.

If you update this csv file you can reimport it. But first you should delete the existing households in your Depiction. Also when you are in the csv import wizard don't chose address. Instead chose the lat/long option as Depiction also exported the lat longs of all the households. This is better also because as you probably observed when you geo-code by address it doesn't get them exact --they are only close to the real address and so if you have moved them manually to be in the right place the exported Lat/long is now correct and you won't have to move them again when you re-import them.

  • You shouldn't have to hold down the shift key. Just hold it down when you first click on the selection box. If you hover your mouse over it, it will give you a help tip. After you have clicked on the button hit the left mouse button for your first point, then move your pointer again to the next location and left click again. Keep doing this until you have drawn your shape and when you are done double click. Then the manage content window comes up with all the elements checked that were in the selection area. Since you have a shape there it is selecting it as well but as you found you can just un-select it and just deal with the households.

  • I've notice that the shape that I've drawing to enclose the households is not anchored to the map. If I scroll or change magnification the shape does not track the map.

I've also noticed that the shape defining the zone will gets selected along with the households if I cross it's boundary and will also get the new property that I add. So I uncheck it in the list of selected items shown in the Manage Contents window.

The pastel color of the shape being draw is a little hard to see and disappears once I double click it to close the contour. I'd rather it remain until I close the windows.

  • Ray, the select tool polygon is not an element like your shape - hence the non-tracking and it disappearing once you've made your selection.

Another option you have once you've added your property is to include it in the hover text and use the "Filter by hover text" box in the Manage and Display Content menus.

You could also, instead of adding a property, add a tag for each zone. Then you can use the List by tags option in the Manage and Display Content menus to quickly list the households by zone.

The only way to stop the select tool from grabbing an element within its boundary is to not have the element displayed, so in your case I would turn off the display of the 'zones' (shapes) before selecting - or as you point out, you'll have to de-select the zone(s) in the Manage Content menu before viewing/editing the properties.

  • I exported my households as a csv file and now have a column "Zone" with the number of each zone.

Your suggestion to use Tags is interesting but do they export too? If so, I could add them in the spreadsheet faster and import them back into Depiction.

  • Unfortunately they don't export, but you could still manipulate your spreadsheet and update the depiction if you use the EID property. Then inside your depiction the tags could remain while you are still able to manipulate the data in the spreadsheet without having to delete and re-import every time.

  • I've resumed labeling zones and have intermittent results. Sometimes it works and other times the changes aren't saved. Neither the Zone label nor its contents are saved. Here are the steps.

    a. Select all members in a zone. Shift-click Selection tool (beneath MENU). Click at each point to create a shape surrounding all members inside the zone. Finish by double-clicking.
    b. Two windows open. Close the Shape – user drawn Properties window by clicking the right top X.
    c. In the Manage Content window, select View / Edit. Select Set Properties. In Property name enter Zone and for type select Text. Click Add Property.
    d. Scroll down the list to find Zone and enter the zone ID for this area (i.e. SA-03). Click Apply then OK.

Sometimes for step b, the second window is Zone of Infuence (ZOI) Editing instead of the usual Shape - user drawn Properties.

  • I've exported the Building element (377) as a CSV file and found that there are now two columns with the name "Zone." Both have the same data; SA-01, SA-02,... SA-08. Seems this is a database violation to have duplicate field names.

    I’m hoping that helps
Ray, the Selection tool should only be opening the Manage Content window. My guess would be that while clicking around to draw the region the shape's properties window and/or ZOI editor get opened. You can disable the editor from opening by un-checking (deselecting) the "editable" property of the shape. If you're double clicking to end the region, that might also be opening the Shape properties.

Otherwise it sounds like your on the right track. In the Manage Content menu you should check to see if the elements selected are the ones you want - here is where you might want to deselect the Shape itself. Sounds like you added the property correctly, if so you should be able to open each element's individual properties and see that it was added to all of them.

  • Ray,
If I understand correctly what you are trying to do is select a group of icons and then put a zone number in their records as a group. Are you also trying to draw a shape the identifies that zone? Assuming I have that correct here is the steps I would take.

First - In manage content select all of the elements that you intend to put the zone field in. Then in the view/edit screen Add a zone property to all of these elements.

Second - Using the selection tool select all of the elements in a zone. When the view/edit property screen comes up then enter the zone number for those elements.

Third - Using the shape drawing tool draw the boundaries of the zone. Double click on the shape to bring up the shape user drawn properties menu. Change the fill color to what I want it to say. If you want to label your zones then go into set hovertext and select change element hover text to the following and then select the zone field and any other field you want to display.

I attempted to add a duplicate property and the program wouldnt let me. If you would want to send your depiction to me I would be glad to take a look at it. Send it to support@depiction.com.

If I didn't understand your issues correctly please let me know.
    Thanks
    Richard

  • I’m still frustrated.
Russell's suggestion to disable the editor solves the issue of accidently selecting the ZOI. I didn't understand that was happening.

Richard - I have 377 households within 14 zones. (Similar to houses within zip codes.) I use the selection tool (shift-click) to draw a polygonal shape to enclose them and right-mouse to end the region which then opens the Manage Content window. I then click View / Edit which opens a second window, Properties.

In Set properties, if I scroll down through the list there's no "Zone" property. (Shouldn't I see all properties?) So at the bottom I type in "Zone," select a type of Text, and click Add Property. If I again scroll the list I now have "Zone" at the end of the list.

If I was working in my Zone 9 then I'd enter a value of SA-09, click Apply and OK which closes the Properties window. I then click Close in the Manage Content window which closes it.

If I examine the properties of one of the households it will show SA-09 for its Zone but it won't display when I hover the mouse over it. If I again open Manage Content it will have an "x" in the Buildings elements and say that all 377 are selected. If I again select View / Edit, click the Set propeties button, and scroll the list there in no Zone. If I click the Set hover text, check Change element hover text to the following: and scroll the list I find Zone in the list twice and both are checked.

I think Depiction has gotten confused and created duplicate fields for Zone and now can't figure out how to update them.

So I repeated the above sequence but name the new zone "Zone 9" and entered data for the household elements "SA-09." I changed Hover text to include "SA-09." Now it will display when I hover over the households.

I think this proves that Depiction is confused with duplicate Zone fields. It so, how do I fix it?

One of your problems is that when you display all of the households in the manage content window it only displays the properties that are in common to all of them. So if some of the households don't have a zone property yet then that will cause that zone field not to display in the group edit mode. That is why I suggested to add the zone property to all of them at the start. You should be able to add a zone property when all are selected.

You have two options to fix it. When you have all of the households selected in manage and have added the zone fields so they display then you can delete one of the zone fields. If this doesn't work I would suggest exporting them to a csv file, delete the offending property zone field (column) and then in Depiction delete all of the households and then re-import them via csv. I would make a back up copy of your DPN just in case.

I think the above fix will also resolve your hovertext issue as well. Let me know how it goes.

  • You said, "One of your problems is that when you display all of the households in the manage content window it only displays the properties that are in common to all of them."

I just created a selection with edges outside the boundary. The Manage Content window says 377 elements are selected if I only have checked "(377) Building" so everything that was imported is within the shape.

When I View/Edit the selection and scroll through the Properties, I don't see the fields in the CSV file that I'd imported.

So I created a new Property ZoneID as Text. As the selection includes all the households, Zone ID now appears in each of zone selections.

I think this file is a mess so I made a copy then used Manage Content and deleted the "(377) Building." I reimport the CSV file.

Before completing the import process, it has Properties for 380 elements. (Don't know why it's now 380 instead of 377). In the CSV file I imported there is "Stake Geo Code" and "Ward Geo Code" fields. In Depiction's Set properties the "Stake Geo Code" isn't listed but "Ward Geo Code" is listed. In Set hover text, "Ward Geo Code" is missing and there are two "Stake Geo Code" listed.

Does this make any sense to you?

In the meantime, I'm going to remove the unneeded fields in my import file to simpify what's going on.

Without actually seeing the file, it is hard to tell what is going on. Like I said I would be happy to take a look at it if you want. However, I realize there may be sensitive data that you don't want to get out, so you could send me some screen shots and maybe I could see something. richards@depiction.com

It sounds like you are doing a project very similar to one that I am currently working on. I have around 900 households in about 60 neighborhoods and went through the process to get the neighborhood code into each household record.

  • I removed the sensitive date in the CSV file that I import leaving only the individual names, addresses, and their family relationships. I imported is again and Depiction still shows the strange Stake Geo Code and Ward Geo Code duplicate/missing above.

I then went through and grouped households into the 14 zones. The interesting thing here is that Zone 2 is the only one that doesn't show both Stake Geo Code and Ward Geo Code properties. Zone 2 contains 12 address icons (there are overlaps with multiple individuals in each address). What's also strange is that I can break it into two groups to try and isolate which icon is causing the Stake Geo Code to vanish. Both halfs display both???

When I export the finished CSV fileand open it in Excel, there's a duplicated Street1 field.

I cn send you the file and a Word document on the steps I use. If you'd like to look at it, how do I send it?

Ray sent me his file and he did have something weird going on. I think I was able to fix it by exporting the zone 2 records and copying the data from Ward Geo Code to Stake Geo-code. I then deleted the records in zone 2 and reimported them and then everything seemed to be OK. But Ray needs to review and verify that fact. Not sure what was happening before but I sent the file to our dev team to take a look.
