I’m Angry

Memory errors, crashes while adding routes, invalid file type after saving

While trying to add a route, I kept getting errors...some while adding waypoints, others while trying to scroll the map. Those were reported by the application.

I finally got depiction to save the route, then while trying to fine tune it (adjust the start point), I started getting alerts that I was out of memory (even though my desktop memory monitor indicated I wasn't even using 50% of my physical memory). I saved the depiction and tried to re-open, only to get a "not a valid file" error.

HOURS of time wasted!!!

  • I’m empathetic.
I can understand your anger. As suggested in your other problem post, I'd like to get a look at your computer. If I can help re-create the route, I'm willing to do that, too.

By your other screen shot, I'm guessing you have a 64-bit computer with more than 2 GB of RAM. One of the known issues with Depiction is that it will only use up to about 1GB of RAM before "running out of memory". I've asked the developers to look into resolving this, as we have more users all the time with higher-RAM computers.

  • Still receiving the "The "Roadnetwork change modifies routes" interaction could not run, because: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.." error...will check it on the desktop. Any word on when the 1gb memory limit will be addressed by developers?

Some back story on this error...I am making (trying to make) a depiction for the California International Marathon coming up in December. I am (trying to) make a route with 12 waypoints (including start and stop) from approx. Folsom Lake to the State Capital in Sacramento County...not outside of the scope of reality in my opinion. The depiction is new, and the only quickstart data I have is Elevation, NAIP Imagery and OpenStreet mapping.

I also get the the weird lock up where the "report a problem" window opens, but I can't see it, then I can't close the window or anything...at that point Depiction complely goes unresponsive and you have to start over again.

  • Not out of the scope of reality, since the marathon is real; but there is a lot of Road Network to handle here. I was able to get the 'out of memory' error when I had the elevation and imagery just as you described. However, attached is an image of what I think you are shooting for (done without elevation and imagery). So I think you are just pushing your computer resources over the edge. However I think you might have user config. issues as well since even when I got the out of memory error the app did not lock up or crash on me.

  • So elevation isn't important when putting together a marathon route? I haven't even added aid stations, water stations or communication points yet. There is no way my computer resources are being stretched...this thing is a beast. I think it's more likely the 1gb memor limit of Depiction.
    • Ok, correction - you're pushing the application's resources over the edge. Also the Route - Road Network element is somewhat 'testy' and can easily be confused, in order to create the marathon route I had to go very slow and methodical. If you can get it stable enough to export and import as a Line, it will take a lot less resources and then you should have no trouble with elevation, aid stations, etc.

      Good luck!

    Hi,

I do a lot of Public Service events including a Marathon using depiction. I highly recommend that you try the following method:

    1. Load just the road network and put in your routes (you can do this in sections if required)
    2. Export your routes to .gml file and edit them to be lines - this procedure detail eludes my memory at the moment but it is available somewhere online here
    3. Save the depiction with your routes in case you need to make edits later
    4. Open a new depiction or make a copy of your current one and delete the road network and the routes - import the lines from the edited .gml file
    5. Now you can load mile markers, fluid stations, relay stations, porti-potties, etc, etc, etc and without the overhead of the road network and routes you will use a fraction of the hardware resources. Since the route is fixed, there is no need to load the road network and routes for actual use at the event.

I hope this helps - I do a ADA TourdeCure which is much larger than the Marathon (100K route, 2 separate 50K routes, and a 25 K route) and using this method it works very well.

  • There appears to be a bug here in how Depiction 1.3 handles this much data. As Robert noted to me, version 1.2.2d handled very similar data just fine. Having changed programming schema for the current version, much is changed, so some fine tuning is in order. I'm detailing this to our developers in hopes they can find the underlying cause soon.
