Flag a challenge entry to indicate if critiques are welcome

A checkbox when uploading a challenge entry that will indicate during voting if critiques are welcomed or not. This would aid the heavy commenters to put their effort where is is most wanted and perhaps also encourage those who don't like to leave comments because of the potential of nasty responses.

ooops... I put this is my "comments" suggestion thread.

Great minds think alike!!

Or is it "great minds have nothing to do with us..."

I like this idea except for the fact that I think it would be over ran by everyone wanting more comments. I would like a trial period to see what happens with it though.

That would be fine, but those who DON'T want to hear others opinions on their photography could leave the box unchecked to let others know to just leave the vote but not waste time with a detailed comment.

I think that too - everyone will want comments!

Great idea, please implement it if possible. It might make so many more people happy.

I would like to see perhaps a couple of choices/levels for this, or certainly a reminder that if you DO ask for comments, you promise to not cry and complain about negative ones.

To add to this idea, I'd say the checkbox should be default for those that are forgetful or if it's not default it should be something that can be easily changed at any time even during an active challenge.

I think that if this function was set to true by default it would be the same thing as we have now a comment box. I think we should change the name of this checkbox to something like please critique my image.

'please critique my image.' Yep, it would be clearer and more useful that way, and it shouldn't be selected by default. Everybody want positive comments, not everybody is ok with criticism.

+1 to above comment. It should default to 'comments welcome'

I would not like to see this as a "Comments Discouraged" feature. I suggest that showing your work implies that feedback is acceptable.

I see your point Steve, but as a matter of fact a number of people are being put off from commenting more than "wonderful" or "very nice image". In the very few challenges I have entered, I have received annoyed replies to perfectly corteous, well-meant comments. And when I see only flattering remarks are marked as useful on a photo, I certainly think that I have been wasting my time commenting.
So, not everybody uses DPC as you suggest they should, why force them to?
Let's assume the 'no criticism required' as standard setting, and those who welcome criticism can click the checkbox

Exactly! Those who check the box intentionally would be intentionally declaring that they are open to critique.

From my experience of the critique club, pretty much everyone checks the 'want a critique' option, regardless of whether they really want one or not. I feel that this feature would just be something that 99.95% of users will always check (as who really doesn't want to receive feedback?), so isn't really necessary - that 0.05% should reconsider why they are posting images online on a photo competition site if they don't want any feedback ;)

Do you mean that many people ask for a critique and then complain about its content? WTH..
You are right that it shouldn't be something people will click by default just out of curiosity or because it looks bad not doing so.
but the critique club comments are only one per image and normally quite kind not to hurt feelings, I think. My received ones were useful but still kind.
But I think that, after receiving several comments pointing out defects to their image, people who don't like that will stop clicking the checkbox.
definetely there should be an explicit disclaimer "please be aware that by selecting this checkbox you are inviting voters to point out defects in your entry, if they see any, and provide criticism. You are therefore accepting that comments might contain negative remarks. If you don't wish to receive criticism, please do not select."
something to this lines, I guess.

I don't think this is much different to the critique club around now.
Maybe just an option to not have comments?

Well, the critique club is flooded with requests, and images are, as far as I understand, randomly assigned to members to comment on. I think this is more about allowing all voters to provide criticism on images they are particulalry interested in, without fear of hurting somebody's feelings. That way, you might receive not just one, but several useful comments. Or you might leave it off and get only more neutral or fully appreciative comments. And people interested in providing criticism will know beforehand whether it's a waste of their and your time to do so.

GREAT idea, I love getting comments, postive or neg, there's something to be learned from either.... I HATE give a critique on some one shot fearing it's a big gun and I just made a fool of me! LOL WHICH I Just did... But like neg comments from others, it's all in the eye of the voter.

If we implement a critique welcome box, and if that box is by default checked, then can we have that box be automatically unchecked if fewer than half the comments received are not marked as helpful.

If a person has received 500 comments and only 20 are marked as useful, I don't care what box they checked, they don't really want comments.

I do hate wasting my time on people who find my efforts useless.

Imo the comments welcome setting should be on the profile, with the ability to override it for a particular challenge.
As to whether it would help... If someone flamed you because of your comment, you could at leasy say they had requested comments.

I would love this as well, as someone whom is starting to comment, I am not sure if people want them or not.. I think with the check box that is already there, just unhide that that way everyone can see it.. that way for those that love to leave comments in detail may do so that way they can help us if they want too.. especially us newbies whom are learning and really crave the feedback to improve
