UPDATE: The Duck Webcomics Launch Schedule

  • Announcement
  • Updated 4 years ago
Hi Everyone,

Just a quick update on the relaunch of the new Duck Webcomics site, which was scheduled to go live today at 3pm (PDT). Unfortunately, although all comic images have been migrated over to the new site, the database migration is taking longer than expected. As a result, we've had to revise the timeline of the new site going live.

The new date for the relaunch of The Duck Webcomics site is now Thursday, July 7th, 3pm (PDT). We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause some of you, but we ask for your patience just a little while longer while we work to get the new site up.

Details regarding the new site launch can be found here http://www.drunkduck.com/news/news_ar...

Thank you.

Hi,

Just a quick update. We're still working on getting the server back up for the new site. Everything should now be migrated over with the exception of comic page comments. We've temporarily paused migration of comments while we sort out this server issues, so worst case scenario, when the site first launches commenting may be disabled for about a day while the migration finishes.

Unfortunately, we don't have a clear estimated time yet when the new site will be up, as it's a matter of figuring out what the exact issue is at this point. Until then, hopefully you guys can be patient a little while longer.

Thanks.

Some day my Duck will come
Some day we'll meet again
And away to his Web Site we'll go
To be happy forever I know

Some day when spring is here
We'll find our Duck anew
And the birds will sing
And loud bells will ring
Some day when my Duck does appear.

With no apologies to Walt Dizzey

Actually, the old site code WAS broken.
It ran slow, crashed regularly, was glitchy when it did work, and was extremely vulnerable to viruses and malware.
This overhaul is long overdue.

The old code was seriously defunct. I'm pretty sure it was constructed through a complicated system of ropes and pullies, and was only one careless knot away from utter destruction.

Case in point -- the website had several crashes that were devastating to the community as a whole.

I'm gonna have to ditto the "This overhaul is long overdue" comment.

Change does not inherently constitute "a bad thing".

Also, show of hands: Who else is going a little bit crazy with the waiting? Anybody? Anybody?

I'm keeping busy. I've set up about 11 pages and an email campaign during the down time. And yes, the old code WAS broken. I believe its roots were from the original site built in 2002 and tossed like salad hither and yon since with no real upgrades. I get it that some of you do not understand how much is involved in moving a server or the mind-boggling number of files involved, but I am telling you, in about six months the ones of you complaining now will be complaining that you haven't had time to get caught up on your comics buffers, or that you're a couple weeks behind...probably because you spent two weeks straight staring at a computer screen and posting complaints for the techs to hurry up and get it moving again.
Success comes to those who get down to business. I'm done.

personally i dont mind the delay. its much better than a disaterous lauch that distroys it. on the other hand maybe gnumes idea about downloading it in hard copy and sending it by courier would have been faster :(

Exactly what I think. Let them do their job and see what happens. I just hope they've got a backup somewhere, just in case.

One of these mornings when I do my daily check, to my delight and utter surprise there will be a sleek and powerful Duck site, humming rather than quacking. Comics will load instantaneously and my eyes will have a feast. The forums will be erupting with the chatter of a reunited community. There will be some peculiarities and not every thing will be tailor-made to my own little Idaho -- but it will be strong and alive.

But not this morning.

*sigh*

I am beginning to see an ulterior motive in this delay -- the longer the wait goes on, the less I am willing to settle for. A week into waiting and it's deteriorated to the point where I'd settle for a login screen, half of the God's Almighty archive, the ability to PQ moderators and the mafia forum games.

ah. a conspiracy theory

Here's another one that I cannot confirm or deny: Could the delay in having the new site operational in any way be related to the paucity of radio voice votes?

Access to the old site was temporarily restricted, but has now been lifted. Was that simply to allow people to get to:
[url=http://www.drunkduck.com/community/vi...

So, Ducks: I'm talking to you! Let's put it to the test. Maybe if another dozen people vote the site will be ready!! (maybe it will take 2 dozen? be a part of that number!!)
Go to that link. Listen to the recordings. Then send your vote to drunkduck100@yahoo.com.

I know: Nonsense! Everyone knows Leachy pulls out another tuft of hair when he sees an ayesinback post; they couldn't possibly be in collusion.

Or could they?

*I couldn't begin to quantify how much of my daily existence is nonsense*

ok, now i'm getting DD withdrawls. will carmen and angie kill each other?, will medusa save jake and the chocodilles?, can pewf afford his new digs? stay tuned for the answer to these, and many other questions! @ayesinback, it is only nonsense to the uninformed, and unimaginative.

@hippy. yeah - no updates for about 2 weeks, but obviously I'm suffering from forum withdrawal, and "getsatisfaction" (!!) is the make-do (altho I suspect CF is a busy place about now).

on another note - it's a well-known fact that animal lovers also love listening to voice recordings . . .

When is the new site going to be up? It's been almost a week after the projected date, and there's been almost no change. I log in to see the exact same old interface and my favourites are conspicuously absent. The information is messed and and there are no updates. What's going on?

Sadly, my friend, you violated one of the highest laws of project management that says, get a good idea of how long the job will take, worst case scenario, and then tell the client it will take TWICE as long. Then, when you get it done UNDER deadline, everyone's happy. ;)
Hopefully there won't be a next time.

As usual, they grew up, went to college, got jobs, threw away the text books...
Ask your IT manager to look up big bang implementation. Not sure why I bother asking. He's going to do it again. It's an industry standard.
