I’m frustrated

Installation stuck at shell

I'm trying to run the install from a portion on the hard drive, a few things fly by then;

[ 3.396263] Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 80x30
ALERT! does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Now its stuck at the shell and I'm not sure what to do next. yes it is an unsupported method on unsupported hardware, but can anyone help?

  • Can you give us some more details about what you are trying to do (what kind of hardware, size of partitions, etc.)?

  • Trying to install easy peasy 1.6 on an IBM thinkpad x21 with two partitions on the hard drive, and a base with a cd drive. hda1 is were I'm trying to install EP, it has Slitaz and boots fine using GRUB. hda1 is 22.5 GB. hda2 is 7.5 GB, it has the kernel(vmlinuz) and initial ram disk(initrd.lz). the entire iso is on an external drive, the drive does get succesfully mounted before the error.

  • I've had trouble digging up any comparable cases on the internet, so apparently not a lot of other people are trying this combination of hardware and software (or not having this problem, anyway). Based on the error message you gave, my best guess is that the current version of Ubuntu (and thus EasyPeasy) is conflicting with the video driver. I could be way off, though.

Your best bet might be to check out ThinkWiki. Keep in mind that, for troubleshooting purposes, EasyPeasy 1.6 is pretty much directly equivalent to Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid). Good luck!

  • Hey, i'm having the same problem on a HP/Compaq nx9030.
The strange thing is that on the other laptop, HP/Compaq 9010 it's running very smooth. the best Yet actually, compared to Ubuntu, LUbuntu, XUbuntu or LinuxMint.
So now after the initial bootscreen where you can select default, strat up EP or oem install, i'm stuck on a blackish screen looking like EP started but it's on screensize3x5 or so. Like one pixel being the entire screen.
Live USb mount, by the way. Which is starting fine on any other laptop or pc (FujitsuSiemens, IBM and HP). A live CD has the same problem.
Ubuntu and Lunbuntu and all the others are running fine for starters but collapse after a while due to lack of RAM. (i think)
Ep hasn't done that after a week of heavy use on the other laptop (nx9010) so i would very much like to use this on the nx9030.
    1.5Ghz celeron and 480MB RAM.
    Hope someone knows a solution.
    Meanwhile i'll check thinkwiki.

  • So... I'm confused. Do you get the error message quoted in the original question by s3th1993, or this "blackish screen looking like EP started but it's on screensize3x5 or so", or both?

  • With one cd i saw the "[ 3.396263] Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 80x30
ALERT! does not exist. Dropping to a shell"
But most of the tries it has the kernel(vmlinuz) and initial ram disk(initrd.lz) loaded, the box appears and i can select start default. Then the blackish screen appears.

  • Hmm. Seems like it should be working if the 9010 is working, right? I assume the two models are similar (and maybe the 9030 is newer)? So I can only think of two reasons why you would get different results. One is that there is something wrong with your 9030; maybe the RAM has started to degrade or there's an issue with the USB drive. The other is that there are Linux compatibility issues with components of your 9030.

I wish I could refer you to a forum like ThinkWiki, but HP/Compaq just doesn't have that kind of fan following. I couldn't find much out there that was similar to your issue, but based on what little I could find, I believe this may be either a video compatibility issue or possibly related to the RAM. If you can give me a little more detail about the error messages you're getting (a screenshot would be helpful), I may be able to get farther with this, but as it is I'm stumped.
