This is very easy. We've worked hard to streamline all aspects of the echoecho user experience across multiple platforms.

It takes about 30-45 seconds to signup - in order to register with echoecho we only need one very small piece of information from you - your phone number.

This is for your own safety and security. Your friends use your phone number in their phones to identify you - and you want them to be able to recognise who the echo comes from - so we use your phone number as a unique identifier in the database.

In marked contrast to many other location based social networks - we don't want or need to know your name, age, email address - we just need to verify your phone number so we can verify you are who you say you are.

If we didn't do this - anybody could sign up for your echo account and pretend to share locations with your friends.

So you select your country code and enter your phone number (people...for those of you who rarely dial overseas - this means you drop the leading zero from your city code...ok...if this doesn't make sense...maybe you shouldn't be owning a smartphone) - and that's it.

You will receive an SMS confirmation. The SMS contains a password code which you can safely ignore on windows mobile, android, blackberry and symbian however on iphone you will have to type it in. It's quite easy to remember.

You only have to type it in once.

(for the geekily inclined among you - the reason you don' t have to type it in on non-iphone phones...is because other platforms allow you to automatically read the password from the confirmation text message ;))

My Blackberry has only a data plan and can't receive/send SMS. I have a dumbphone which can receive SMS. Is it possible for me to receive the SMS on the dumbphone and manually enter the confirmation code on my Blackberry?

unfortunately for the moment - you need to be able to receive SMS on the unit itself in order to register echoecho.

Thanks for the reply.

Too bad the Blackberry version isn't like the iPhone version where you can just manually type in the SMS.

Too much automation is sometimes not a good thing.

agreed. especially when it doesn't work ;(
However there is a method to our madness because the automated sms intercepts that are used on the blackberries are an alternative form of push (blackberry has only supported push in O/S version 5.0 and above. And there are plenty of 4.6 and 4.2 devices out there. In theory you can use an iphone with no SIM card (using the method you described) but you'd be surprised how often people complain because they have to manually type in anything.

I'm running 5.0 on my Blackberry Bold 9700 so for the time being, I can't use the program or I'll wait until the process is "a bit less automated" like it is on the iPhone version.

understood. We'll put this suggestion on the feature list as an alternative method of registering. Subscribe to the twitter feed (@echoechome) and you'll find out about it when it's ready. thanks

Hi, I am using a smartphone with windows mobile 6.5 and after typing in my phone number there is nothing more. And everytime I open the app I have to register again and again and again...

Now I read that I don't have to put the password# in but why does the app always want me to register then?

Hope someone can help me! =)

Hey Johann - that shouldn't be happening. I just tested a new install with windows mobile 6.5 and it seemed to work fine. However it's perfectly possible there is another issue that we are unable to replicate.
Unfortunately we are phasing out support for windows mobile 6.5 and (as far as microsoft is concerned at least) we will only be supporting windows phone 7.

hey sirous - what kind of a phone are you using ?
On most phones you can just go to the appstore/marketplace to get echoecho - or you can go to m.echoecho.me

unfortunately there are some problems we're seeing with certain 8520 Blackberry models. We're actually completely revamping the Blackberry build - to make a much richer UI experience (and a more stable overall platform) - however this won't be ready for another few weeks.

hey sachu - when you say you are stuck in the "register your phone" menu - does this mean you are entering your number - clicking NEXT but the screen doesn't move to the next page?

The next page should look like this:

Hmm - we've never seen this before. What country/carrier are you on?

And you say you are receiving the registration SMS correctly?

LG P970 is an android phone - not windows phone. You likely are not doing anything wrong - it might just be a strange bug. Could you contact us directly on help(at)echoecho.me. We'll need to check your number in the database (and I don't think it's a good idea to post the number here). thanks

Why is there a requirement to register using an SMS? Why not just send a web request by automatically collecting the phone number from the phone?
