GPS accuracy on Samsung Galaxy S 2 problem

Hi,

First of all, I have to say that this is a great app. I had been using it for a while in my previous HTC Desire, and it did work very well.

So, I decided to change my device to Samsung Galaxy S 2, and I'm getting a little issue that bothers me a LOT: GPS accuracy.

It's completely different from Desire, and I really don't know what to do. Today, I tried to disable my data connection and keep only GPS (to see if it works better), but it got even worse.
My last 2 workouts (Oct 7th and 10) were done with Galaxy S2, so you can check how bad it is. Latest one (Oct 10), I did draw it named as "5.5km" route, so you can compare the real path against reported by Endomondo. Altough distance was not THAT different, path is unreadable.

So, I have a couple of questions about it:
1) is there any way to improve such situation ? (configuration, modem...?)
2) Is there anything (like some work from dev guys) related to Samsung Galaxy S2 ongoing to get it better ? Might it be related to the app ?
3) I saw in some topic about reinstalling the app ... is it feasible ?! What's about ?

Thanks in advance. I really would like to keep using it, but I'm very disappointed unfortunately.

Best regards,
Adriano.

  • Hi Eva,

I tried updating, rebooting, but I think it didn't work as expected.
I just realized that it got a little bit better by changing from "Walking" to "Running".
Does GPS refresh is higher on "Running" compared to "Walking" ?

Regardless, I wished it could be better.
Anything else that I can do ?

    Regards,
    Adriano.

    Hi Adriano,
there is not much left you can do, I am afraid. The GPS accuracy is not sufficient on some phones, but since it is not the issue of our app, we cannot really fix it.
The only thing which could help is to reinstall the app - back up your history before: http://gsfn.us/t/2c52d
Let me know if it helped.

  • Hi Eva.
Thanks for trying. Unfortunately, I'll have to accept that.
Even reinstalling does not fix, so I guess it's a device issue.
I'm just wondering that we have so many SGS2 users, and I can't see that much complaining...

  • I also have a Galaxy S2 running on Android 2.3.5.

My GPS distance tracking is way out and it doesnt seem to show me ascent or descent. I noticed on iPhone it shows you that info.. why not on Android?

I plot out the route on Ordanance Survey map and it is 7.5 miles.. Endomondo tells me it's 9.5 miles..

    Can anyone help me?

Otherwise I will have to leave bad feedback for this application and uninstall it. This is disapointing because I bought the pro version and unhappy that it isnt working properly.

    • This problem has just started happening to me. All was well last weekend, and this weekend there is no GPS fix at all. All my settings are on, Accuweather app picks up GPS no problem. What's up Endomondo?
    • Accuweather gets location for your *town*. It works even with your GPS off. If it can't get a signal with your GPS, it uses cell phone towers. Weather doesn't vary much across a town. To determine if your GPS is working, see my post below about installing GPS Test.

  • Lars,

The results from another tracking app would interesting although, to be fair on Endo, I have to say that a variation of around 5% is almost within the sort of differences one might get from variations in weather and varying positions of satellites related to time of day. The bigger question is whether the distance is around 5-5.25k or, as some of us are experiencing, 25%-35% less.

The post I have just made exports from Endo and reads them in Google Earth. If you do that are the two trips essentially over-lapping and the same distances?

    Regards

    Will

My experience is variation from 5km to 5.3 km which I find useless which, at my speed is comparable to a time diffence of 45s. I guess most people will agree that 45 s is a great difference on 5 km.
I also have a Garmin forerunner and have never seen those differences, and no dependences of weather, time of day or anything else. Also I had no probelm with earlier versions of endomondo.
Please get the good work going and correct this error.

I have the same problem. Last week I ran 499Km in 30min. Am I fast or not? I installed runnkeeper and it is working perfectly. Defnitely, the problem is with endomondo. I am having similar problems - turns out there is usually about a +25% discrepancy in the reported distance as compared to my husbands Windows mobile version and my Anquet software.
It's a bit worrying as I thought my running was going really well and apparently it's not as good as I thought.

Any timescale on a fix, please?

Definitely there is an issue with Endo, If you look into GPS data it seem to be correct (with some exceptions), but Endo approximates this in very strange manner, removing valid points and using the ones that are most inaccurate.

  • I have kind of a similar problem on my Samsung Google Nexus. The distance is quite OK (a little short though), but the graphs have way too few points to be accurate. I'm inlining and I guess the problem is that with the speeds I sometimes achieve, the frequency of the measurements is not high enough. Even though everything seems OK, maximim speed is sometimes unreasonable high (30% higher than expected) and so on. It seems like there is a problem with Endo not removing unreasonable measurements also. If it would be possible to configure the GPS measurement interval, I guess most problems would disappear. But on the other hand, I have GPS positions that are a few meters off from the tack also, mostly when turning, which indicates that the measurement is not a measurement, but rather a prediction based on measurement, direction and speed...

I was having some issues with my old HTC HD2, but after do some research, found that the HTC Sensation 4G has a way better accuracy compared to many phones. So this was my choice.... I'm new to endo - switched to it after getting a new phone (HTC Rezound) and my tracks gps went haywire. Unfortunately, endo's gps seems to have the same problem. My gps signal is VERY accurate, but for some reason both apps are showing tracks that roughly follow the route i went, but look like a three year old with a sugar rush drew them - they are scribbles that bounce all around and distort the distance 2 or 3 times the actual distance walked or run! Is there a problem with the new smartphones?

    This was consistent every time.
I ditched the Samsung and got a Motorola.
Not sure if it is relevant, but the Samsung GPS uses the Russian GPS system, not the US original one.

This and related issues have been going on for much longer than a year not just in this thread but many others. Search on 'accuracy.

It began on my HTC Desire and continues on my HTC One X. The problems exists (very poor accuracy, wild tracking and the app stopping when a phone call or SMS comes in or a set alarm/reminder goes off). They are all Endomondo issues not Android as is evidenced by the fact that competitive software like OMN. Runstastic, etc run without problems.

Many people have spent the time to log these problems in great detail and I am afraid that Endomondo development staff seem to be in denial and instead of fixing the problem they offer largely ineffective palliative solutions.

Wake up Endomondo - the world is moving on and you have a popular produc that is dying on the vine.

By the way - you might ask why I am still here. Good question. The reason is simply that I am an eternal optimist and keep in touch so that I can try each new release of Endomondo in the hope that these long standing issues are finally fixed.

Well, the attitude of the company is really horrible. Application with main purpose of GPS tracking should definitely know how to measure GPS locations.

At least Endomondo could allow user to set frequency of GPS positioning and also detect when some location is obviously very off and not count it (when I'm running in a city and all of sudden it detect my location somewhere in the middle of Atlantic ocean or Greenland, it *is* obvious that it's not correct data).

  • First, I'm sorry there are so many unintelligent trolls in this post. Way of the anonymous internet.

I also have a Samsung Galaxy S2 by Sprint (USA) and had the GPS receiver problem.

Downlaod the free program GPS Test
Run it, and track how long it takes to get a lock.
That will tell you if the GPS receiver (Hardware) in the phone is acquiring satellites
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/de...

See Bruno Israel's post above--A quick google also showed me that a reasonably large percentage of Samsung Galaxy S II's have GPS problems.
    https://www.google.com/search?q=galax...

If my phone had been running a while and I turned on the GPS, it would either get a lock in under 30 seconds, or I could leave it in the yard for six hours and never lock on (again, verifying with the GPS Test program).

99% of the time, if I restarted the phone, the GPSr would lock correctly in under 20 seconds. But you don't want to reboot every time I wanted to use the GPS.

As the phone's GPS couldn't get a lock, none of the programs could use it (Google maps would run, but would approximate my position). It's the phone that's broken, not Endomondo.

Samsung has a 1 year warranty replacement. Once I got a hold of them (via both their web page and facebook, but I recommend calling), my phone had 2 months left. I sent it in, it took them a week to determine it was bad, and after another week they sent a new (not repaired) phone back--giving me a new battery, cables, etc as a bonus.

Hope this helps. If it's out of warranty, you're probably out of luck, but you can try appealing to Samsung and pointing out it's a known bad hardware issue.
    • Then Endomondo could at least detect when some location is obviously very off (be it a bug in hardware, Android or Endomondo) and not count it. When I'm running in a city and all of sudden it detects my location somewhere in the middle of Atlantic ocean or Greenland, few thousand kilometres far away, it *is* obvious that it's not correct data.

The problem is also in total lack of interest of Endomondo stuff to do *anything* and rather ignore the thread. Reading other posts, it seems that there may be few different causes, maybe related, maybe not, but obviously nobody cares as long as the users have paid already.
    • I agree with you--they should be checking in on these threads, gathering info, and letting customers (especially the pro ones) know what they're doing.

When my old GS2 was bad, it would not lock on at all--I never had a "jumping location." It would simply not lock on, until I rebooted.

It may be so that some phones have a GPS problem but that doesn't explain the poor results obtained using Endomondo on phones that don't have a GPS problems as evidenced by many users that have compared results using competitive software where Endo display wild deviations.

THis thread has been goin on for a year, others on the forum have been going on for 2years and all Endo staff can claim is that 'its not our software, its your hardware'.

IN short Endo staff are in denial.

  • This thread is dedicated to the problems on an Galaxy S2, a device with bad GPS hardware as noted on cell phone provider boards, independent boards, and professional review boards. Even if the software is perfect, it doesn't matter--the hardware is broken.

While there are problems in other devices (I have posted my frustration with that in the proper threads), that is not what *this* thread is for. It's not denial, it's your inability to understand a the purpose of a thread or topic.

  • 1
*sigh*. I tried explaining the basic purpose of grouping problems by topic, and why posting about something off topic (other phones) was not going to give you the solution you were hoping for. That didn't go well.

So let's look at some more of your thought process
    - You state Endomondo doesn't respond to issues (or is in denial)
    - then you say Endomondo not responding to this thread (and locking it) is a sign the problem on the GS 2 is Endo's issue, despite all the other apps and documentation saying there's a problem with the phone GPS.

OK. Things are clearer to me. Let's try one more:
    - You make multiple posts to a board (including in incorrect threads)
    - You state that the app owners ignore you or, when they do reply, they deny a problem.

Yeah....it's time for me to unsubscribe from this thread; the problem in this thread (GPS on Galaxy S2) has been answered. While I will state again (which you keep missing) that there is a compatibility problem on some phones, when it comes to the Galaxy S2 the hardware problem has to be fixed first (preferably by exchanging the phone like I did) before you can troubleshoot the software.

I would like to add to this thread. I have an S2 running Android 4.1.2 and Endomondo Pro 9.0.2. It has been inaccurate for while and I had to stop using it as it had me walking at around 4 Mph which is clearly wrong. I record in Miles. I do not use Auto Pause or Low power mode.

I have recently been using Google My Tracks which is accurate but is cumbersome in terms of uploading and analysis. I would dearly love to use endomondo again.
Today I tracked the same walk in 3 different ways. I walked:-

2.76 miles on Endomondo in 35 mins Ave speed 4.74 mph
1.94 miles on My Tracks on same phone Ave speed 2.57
1.82 miles on Endomondo on my very old Symbian phone.

As you can see Endomomdo on my S2 is way out and the My Tracks is accurate as is the old Symbian Endomondo.
Endomondo on the S2 is consistently nearly a third as much again in mileage which is well outside your tolerence margins. Could it be recording Kilometers and treating them as miles. Anyway it is useless to me as it is now. Is there anything you can suggest to help as it was my favourite tracking app and used to work perfectly up until about a year ago.

  • Hi Adriano, i believe I have an answer for you. I had the same problem with my samsung galaxy s4 and after trying everything, I figured out what it was.
Open your application manager, go to the last screen where you can see all apps installed in your device. They are sorted in alphabetical order, scroll down to "y" and uninstall or disable all yahoo apps. After that, your gps will work perfectly.
