Auto Pause - how does it work?

Auto Pause is a feature that will detect when you are standing still, so that the Endomondo app only track your workout when you are moving.

This can be useful when stopping at a traffic light or likewise, so your average speed and total duration doesn’t get affected by the breaks.

This is how it works. When the Endomondo app detects you haven’t moved for 5 seconds the workout will be paused and once you move again the workout will be resumed.

The feature is available for Android, Blackberry, iPhone and Windows Phone 7.

It is only recommended to use Auto Pause for sports where you move faster than 8 mph / 13 km/h.

OBS: If you experience issues with the Auto Pause feature, it might be due to GPS issues. Please try to disable GPS in the phone, reboot the phone, and enable the GPS again, as this will refresh the satellite information the GPS receives. The Auto Pause feature can also have trouble detecting when you are moving or standing still in areas with tall buildings or other obstacles that can block the satellite signal.

  • I'm also experiencing issues with autopause on an iPhone 4. This feature worked perfectly a few updates ago, but now is pretty much useless. I was running with a friend yesterday who was wearing a Garmin watch. We both noted it felt like we were running a little faster than normal. He looked at his watch and said we were under 8.0 minute miles. I checked my phone and Endomondo told me we were at 9.46 minute miles. We stopped at several red lights and I didn't hear the autopause feature kick on even once, and I made a point of standing very still to get this feature to work properly. When I got home I checked the stats on the website. It says I ran 4.25 mi in 43.27 minutes with an average speed of 10.13. That math doesn't even work. If you simply divide 4.25 mi by 43.27 minutes, the average speed is under 10.00. Since the autopause feature wasn't working, the 43.27 includes quite a bit of time standing at traffic lights. I run well under 10.00 minute miles and I was running faster than normal yesterday, so I'm sure the stats on this workout are incorrect.

Now that I have come to the realization that the stats for this workout are totally incorrect, it leads me to believe the stats for other (if not all) workouts are inaccurate. I was excited to have several years of data in my stats since I've been an Endomondo user for a couple years now, but if the data is incorrect, why should I continue to rely on it?

Please fix this feature. It was working perfectly a few months ago and it's crucial to the integrity of the data (which is the only reason to even use an app like this)!

@ Tom same problem here. Till 2 updates ago the autopause/autoresume functionality worked OK, since then it's useless as it didn;t pick up my stretching pause anymore. Since last update it's even worse as it detects pauses during my running (may be it indicates I should run faster), and I have to switch it off.
    I 'm using Endomondo on a iPhone 4s.

I find auto-pause comes on when I am still active. I just did a basic walk around my local oval with the dog to see how far it was. In 1.26km Endomondo auto-paused 4 times and I had not stopped and GPS was OK all the time. I am on iPhone 4S and all up-to-date on software versions

After 5 months using endomondo with the free app, I went pro. The auto pause worked great. Now after going PRO it does not pause. What's up? I've tried downloading a new version.

  • There are certain points on my regular route where auto pause kicks in even if I am running , it seems to happen when the phone loses the GPS signal , this happens a lot in the Winter months and may be the cause of some of your issues.

  • Losing GPS signal might well be the cause of the auto pause issues, why would this be worse in winter time? When I had problems there was no snowfall, heavy rain or fog conditions that would possibly hinder GPS signals. Is that different for you?

  • GPS satellite signals are affected by atmospheric conditions more than it's affected by weather, but the signal to your device may not be where your current weather is , the satellite signal may be several hundred miles away distance wise and being affected by pressure fronts a long way away from you.

Add to this , during the winter months (Northern Hemisphere) the satellites are lower on the horizon , the signal has to travel further, through more and being lower relative to you on the skyline can be more easily blocked or reduced in signal strength.

  • I have had the opposite problem. Turned on auto-pause a week ago, and all of my runs say my time has increased. (Thought I was just getting faster, I am trying) I ran with a friend who also uses Endomondo and our pace was different by a whole min. I will be turning this feature off.

  • I agree with other comments - I've been using Pro for 2 years and auto pause used to work really well. For the past couple of months or so it's been useless. Come on Endomondo, give us some feedback on this - and a solution.

Would be really cool if you could ramp up the effort on the Auto Pause, which – as far as I'm concerned – does not seem to work at all (on the Pro-app on my iPhone 4, which I rebooted after turning GPS off – and later on again as per instructions in another thread).

The other day, for instance, I took a ride with the Endomondo- and Strava-apps on at the same time. My route had quite a few traffic lights, and while Strava estimated the 'moving time' to 50.3 minutes, Endo said 55.2 minutes. That's quite a difference (which only adds up the longer you ride).

Frankly, guys; you *should* be able to do better. After all, this issue has been up for discussion for quite some time now.

To cut it short: I really love Endomondo, the app and the community – but the Auto Pause? Not so much, sorry to say.

  • I’m Annoyed
Tried it on my last cycling workout and I'm pretty disappointed. It only activated on two of the six stoplights on my route. It's supposed to come on after 5 seconds, but I probably waited an average of 30 seconds at each light. In addition, it seems to have thrown off my distance measurement. Before I turned the feature on, I calibrated my bike speedometer to match the GPS measurement as closely as possible. It worked quite well.

There are no tall buildings to block the GPS signal, just residential and one-story buildings. I'm going to turn it back off and live with the variability in my average speed.

Yeah Auto-Pause seems to be getting worse on my phone too (iPhone 4 running Endo Pro 8.1.0 with good GPS signal).

It now doesn't activate at any of the traffic lights on my commute - despite the fact I'm often stood perfectly still for a couple of minutes.

In fact the only time it seems to AutoPause now is when I'm cycling slowly up a steep hill. It never seems to pause when I'm actually stopped.

It is a well-known issue that auto-pause are not working properly (at least while bicycling), but Endomondo haven't bothered to respond to this thread for several months.

I even brought it to their attention more than a month ago (in a very polite way) on Facebook with a direct link to this thread, and some representative promised to look into it. But nothing happened. A brief update would have been nice, but, well...

    Not cool!

PS: Oh, and by the way; The latest iOS-update did not fix this; I checked as soon as today.

  • I’m a frustrated Premium member with a Pro app. Where is my support??
Quick Test: Try riding with your screen on and take a look at what it says when you think Auto Pause should be activating.

I've done this for the past few days and every time I stop I see that my "Speed" is still between 14 to 20 km/h - even after I've been stopped for several minutes!

Then as soon as I start to move my speed drops down to 3km/h or so and I get the "Auto Pause...Auto Resume"

Can Endo PLEASE fix it now?
    • view 3 more comments
    • It seems to take a GPS fix often enough when I am moving. And it spots straight away when I start moving from stopped. So I don't think it is a problem with the GPS interval.

To me it looks like it doesn't update Speed when the GPS determines you are not moving. If AutoPause is relying on that Speed value then it won't work properly.
    • Another thing I see with Endo is not capturing my max speed. There's a switchback on one of my usual routes where I typically hit 28MPH on the descent, but Endo never shows that. Usually comes out to 23 or so. Doesn't make a lot of sense. Cycling is a fluid motion, not chopped up, doesn't need to be averaged over long intervals.
