What are points for?

Somebody PLEASE explain what the points are for. They seem to serve no purpose whatsoever. Why are there "points"? They don't matter at all. Why are they there? Why do so many questions never get answered? Urrghh. Wonderful site; productive writers emerge; bell strikes empty.

I'm afraid those points hold as much intrinsic value as you care about them. They're a sort of feedback system on how regularly you write. One can design a personal reward system around those points. The first week I stuck with 750words.com I liked just having SOMETHING tell me that I was productive for simply slogging through my textdumping brain. Then I got worried about all those privacy issues because hey, there's not even a minimal legally binding Privacy Page up as far as I knew so... why not look into alternatives.

If you don't care for the points at all and only want the constant wordcount display, you can do what I've chosen to do and switch to JDarkroom - a fullscreen minimalist text editor - do press F5 for help when you first use it though. If I want to bother with a point system, I'll set one up myself with some scripting.

OK, Mel, thanks, I thought points had no real function, and keeping track of the complex algorithm that would actually feedback how regularly one writes via the points on a given day is useless for most people. I just check to make sure I have the same as everybody else in my time zone to be sure I am credited with writing. I don't need another app, just the badges and gold stars that I crave...after a certain point there just aren't any....except points which are arcane.
Thanks for clearing up......
