Communicaiton between Eurotherm 3208 (RS485) and computer via USB-485 converter

Hi,

I need connect an Eurotherm 3208 (RS485) to computer via NI USB-485 converter.

What I tried (Eurotherm 3208 with RS485 and NI 485-USB):

1. Following Eurotherm manual, shorting USB-485 pin4 and pin 8 connecting to HE Rx of 3208; shorting USB-485 pin5 and pin 9 connecting to HF Tx of 3208; attach 220 ohm resistor between HE and HF; connect USB-485 pin 1 to HD Com of Eurotherm 3208, but it does not work. Measurement & Automation Explorer can write (I think to USB-485 only) but cannot read from the controller.

2. Following Eurotherm manual and [NI]: 371253e, shorting USB-485 pin4 and pin 8 connecting to HE Rx of 3208; shorting USB-485 pin5 and pin 9 connecting to HF Tx of 3208; attach 220 ohm resistor between HE and HF; shorting USB-485 pin 2 and pin 3, shorting USB-485 pin 6 and pin 7; connect USB-485 pin 1 to HD Com of Eurotherm 3208, but it does not work. Measurement & Automation Explorer can write (I think to USB-485 only) but cannot read from the controller.

3. So shall I try without the 220ohm resistor?

4. And what are the right settings in Measurement & Automation Explorer? Shall I change the default settings in Measurement & Automation Explorer?

5. I directly connected this USB-485 converter to a female DB-9 connector with shorting pin 2 &3, shorting pin 4 & 8, shorting pin 5 & 9 and shorting pin 6 &7. I used Measurement and Automation Explorer to test this cable. However, it also shows writing has return count but reading has error. So does it mean that this USB-485 converter malfunctions or I made some mistake? How can I check that? Will re-installation of driver of USB-485 converter be helpful? Is this driver downloadable?

Generally, I need know what the correct connections between 3208 (3 wires) and USB-485 (9 pins) are and how to communicate between 3208 and computer.

Thanks a lot.

    Hello Liu,

    Firstly I would try connecting pins 1 to HD, 4&8 to HF and 5& 9 to HE as shown in their instructions.

    Also you may want to download iTools software to ensure this can communicate with the Eurotherm device, which is free from our website below.

    http://www.eurotherm.co.uk/index.php?...

    Also I am unsure of what version of windows you are using as I have experienced problems using convertors with Windows 7 and now use convertor brand FTDI chip as this works fine.

  • Hi Bob,

    Thanks for your reply.
    I tried this "connecting pins 1 to HD, 4&8 to HF and 5& 9 to HE as shown in their instructions." but it still does not work. And I installed iTools and scanned for Eurotherm device. iTools cannot detect 3208 either.
    So my supervisor suggested that I should check the comm setting of 3208, may I know which parameters in 3208 I should pay attention to?

    Thanks again.

    Hi Liu,

    You can view this in Level 3.

    Page to COMMS.

    Scroll through the parameters.

    ID = RS485
    ADDR = this is a number of your choosing.
    BAUD = 9600
    PRTY = none
    DELAY = OFF
    REG.AD = 0

  • Hi Bob,

    Thanks a lot. I checked these. They are all right.
    I changed to another NI USB-485 converter. Under certain configuration, I can get Read operation's return counts to be 2 bytes by using NI Measurement And Automation Explorer (at the same time, write operation has no error). The error message is "Visa xx error xx cannot perform the operation because I/O has error". Even I turned off the controller, Measurement And Automation Explorer does the same thing (write operation has no error; read operation has 2 bytes return counts).
    At the same time, iTools cannot detect the 3208 either.
    It seems turning on or off 3208 has no difference. So what could be the reason?
    Pls kindly share your idea if possible.

    Thank you very much,

    Liu Wei

  • Hi Liu,

    1) Can you please confirm you see the same parameters on the instruments display as Bob mentioned.

    ID = RS485
    ADDR = this is a number of your choosing.
    BAUD = 9600
    PRTY = none
    DELAY = OFF
    REG.AD = 0

    2) Make sure the communication settings (BAUD = 9600, PARTY = none, DELAY = OFF) on the NI USB-485 converter are exactly the same with the 3208.

    3) Which COM Port number the NI USB-485 converter is assigned by the computer? You can find this from the Device Manager. You will need to ensure iTools is configured to scan this Port number.

    4) Please provide information of Computer Operating system, as Bob mentioned, and verify if the NI USB-485 converter is compatible with the Operating system.

    5) You will not be able to use Measurement & Automation Explorer to read from the controller.

    Please use iTools to ensure your wiring and NI USB-485 converter configuration are correct.

  • Hi Dimitris,

    Thanks for your message. I will check and ensure accordingly.
    May I know how I can do "You will need to ensure iTools is configured to scan this Port number. "? What I did now is after opening iTools, I directly click "Scan" button.
    Pls let me know.

    Thanks.

    With regards,

  • Hi Lui,

    All the information is in the iTools online help. Open the Help and go to the Index Tab and type Serial Port Tab. Read the section “Access from within iTools” onwards.

    Here are the instructions:
    From iTools Select 'Advanced/Show Server' in the Options menu. Select Show Server. This opens the Server. The server window may appear on the screen, or may appear only as a new item in the task bar, according to the Windows operating system in use. Click on the Server item in the task bar if necessary to open the Server window.

    Check your USB port appears is in the list. If it is not then, select 'iTools Control Panel' in the Edit menu.

    Click on the Serial Port Tab and Click on the relevant port to enable it for use by iTools. Port characteristics can be edited if required (Edit... key), but this facility should be used only by advanced users.

  • Hi Dimitris,

    Thanks for instruction. I tried to use iTools to communicate with 3208 but it does not work. I just highlighted Com port in the Show Server. Is it good enough for the scan?
    Btw, I tried with a new 3208. However, this 3208 is strange. Even I never set temperature. It tried to cool the temperature by Output2. The quick code configuration I used is Set1: KCHCx; Set2: 1WRxT. Is the combination of quick code is all right? Pls let me know.
    I am using a K type thermocouple and will need 0-1200DegC range and need 3208 to communicate with a desktop to record temperature.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Liu,

    If you still have a problem please provide more details what is you setup. The fact that you can not connect using iTools means you set up or wiring is not correct or the USB-485 converter communication settings are NOT exactly the same as the ones set on the 3208.

    Also verify the 3208 comms board hardware type is 485 and not 232
