Setting up iTools OPC Server

Currently, I have a 2 Eurotherms 2404 connected serially through COM port to 2 seperate PCs. Now I want to set up a central server, in which through an OPC iTool server, I can monitor both Eurotherms. Can you kindly support on how I can achieve this please?

  • There are several ways you can achieve this:

    1 - DCOM/Remote OPC:
In theory you can use DCOM (distributed/remote COM) which would allow you to access the OPC Servers on 192.168.1.51 and 192.168.1.53 from 192.168.1.250.
However setting up DCOM is troublesome and none-trivial - all depends on your computer networking setup. There are various online tutorials for setting this up - e.g. https://scadahacker.com/library/Docum...

    2 - Remote USB with USB-Serial converts - e.g.
AnywhereUSB - 192.168.1.250 is connected to both 2404 via remote USB

3 - MODBUS/TCP - use the 192.168.1.51 and 192.168.1.53 PCs as MODBUS/TCP to MODBUS Serial converts. You could purchase dedicated MODBUS-/TCP to serial converts (e.g. lantronix, or Raspberry PI running MODBUS/TCP to serial converter software), or if you get yourself an "iTools Open license", the iTools OPC Server running on *.51 and *.53 can become MODBUS/TCP servers (e.g. expose their serial comms port via MODBUS/TCP. Either way, *.250 can then access both 2404 via MODBUS/TCP network ports.

Personally, I would avoid DCOM/Remote OPC - very hard to setup and could break as/when Microsoft change/update the Windows OS.

The iTools OPC Server running as a MODBUS/TCP services is very straight forward, but would require you purchasing an Open iTools license.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi Adrian,

Thank you for your reply, I will try to go for the Modbus/tcp architecture.

I have followed the following article in setting up my system:
    http://www.eurotherm.net.au/itools/pd...

I have to purchase the Open iTools licence to get this done now as you suggested.

    Thank you and regards,
    Brandon!
