Experienced players tend not to use warehouses much as a rule as it tends to take up too much space for their strategy and it isn't considered of much importance.
With this in mind, I propose another use for warehouses. As well as protecting resources as is, we should also be able to protect gold.
More importanly though, I suggest warehouses be used increase the total storage space for allowing resources to be produced from your resource fields.
Yes, I know you could max out 100% on one resource until it is full, and then switch to another. I see that as a legitimate strategy, much like changing production levels, and not an exploit.
And of course, the Stockpile research level would keep increasing the extra storage space too.
I also suggest that Stockpile research should also increase the basic storage space by 10% each level, so even if later you pull down all your warehouses, you will still have double storage for production if you have researched to lvl 10.

Other uses for warehouses - protect gold, increase production storage space
-
Um this all ready happens. Everytime you upgrade stockpiling you increase your resource capacity limit.
-
-
You sure about that? I never noticed. Pretty sure the Stockpile research only increases the warehouse space but I could be wrong.
-
Yep, it already does this.
40 level 9 sawmills with 0 stockpile = ~18mil capacity
with level 10 stockpile >30mil capacity. -

Why not just have warehouses hold 1M resources at level 10?
Then have stockpile increase from there, I don't like warehouses, only because they don't hold as much as they really should, especially when your making mass production of troops, you will have over 10M of each resource for sure... -
