"Image tag" an audio recording

While I like the new feature to audio tag memories, I suggest providing a complementary feature to tag an audio recording with an image. A thumbnail of the image could then be displayed in place of the microphone icon.

  • You mean like a create your own thumbnail icon or cover art for each audio file you upload? That's a great idea! I imagine it being similar to when you create a story on FamilySearch and you can upload a photo or choose from your gallery to select a photo.

Walt Disney would tell his Imagineers to "plus it" as a way to motivate them to take their work to another level.

Just going off that idea of yours - with stories, you can add up to 10 photos. How about being able to create a simple slideshow with the audio (up to 10 photos)?
Ex. I have audio of Charles Austin Jacobs (LL9P-K1V) telling his family story and want to pick a few photos and transition timecodes as he tells about his siblings, parents, grandparents, etc.

  • Hi Brian,

"Cover Art" is an appropriate description,. In fact, the mp3 format allows embedding of a jpeg image for such a purpose. Family Search could extract this image, when available and associate it with the recording.

A slideshow feature is one possibility. Ultimately, I'd like to see Family Search support video uploads. These may have to be limited to relatively short clips in order to limit storage requirements.

For the time being, you could consider creating a Family Search source with an external link to a slideshow stored on a site like Google Drive.

    Regards,

    David

  • Upload the recording from the person's record, rather than to the Gallery. That way the recording is tagged to the person and appears as part of the person's memories. As far as tagging other involved in the recording, I haven't worked with recordings at all, but I suspect that one can tag the recording itself, just not any details within the recording.

The other alternative, as suggested by Lightshiner, create a source with the memory attached to it. Title the source with something appropriate to the recording, and then add the memory to that source.

What this does is provide a source that can be tagged to an event, such as a birth or Christening/Baptism, name, etc., for instance, the person whose voice is in the recording could have said, "I was born 'in the summer' (citing Crocodile Dundee when asked how old he was)," which would identify when he was born.
