"The image is currently unavailable. Please try again later" for all Philippine records

I've just joined this community in the hopes of shedding light on my family's history. However, I'm already getting frustrated with the "The image is currently unavailable. Please try again later" notification I always get for all the images and records I've sifted through within 4 hours. These records are mostly Philippine catalogs.

Am I missing something in how I search?

This is a known "bug", but a solution by the FamilySearch engineers appears to be far from easy to find. At present, either direct access to these records - or a message advising of any restricted access - requires multiple page reloads: sometimes around twenty!

Firstly, I would check the Catolog section for the film numbers in question. If you wish to view these from home and they are only available for viewing at a Family History Centre you will be saved further time. However, even if you go along to your nearest FHC to view, you are likely to be met (initially) by the same message.

If it is any consolation, you are far from alone in experiencing this problem, so please keep persevering until a solution can be found.

(P,S. I'm not a FamilySearch employee, just another frustrated user like you.)

  • Like Paul said check the catalog to see if the film has a lock icon on it, restricted. I can say, because I worked with records most of the Philippines records had what we called a geocode lock. Geocode means a geographical lock so it means depending on were are viewing them you may be able to. Example in this case you can view them in the USA at a FHC but the Philippines you can't.

As others have said before, this bug is causing a lot of problems. A large chunk of the records on FS have some restriction on them, and almost all the time now when someone attempts to view a image they cannot (at least from their current location or religion), they get this message. Probably hundreds of people a day are seeing this and giving up on using FS.

I repeat what I said about 2 months ago- It is no use for FS to be adding millions of new records a month if so many of them have this problem that makes them unusable except for the small minority who know to refresh repeatedly.

By the way, some records are genuinely not / no longer available. I had downloaded many records relating to the Norfolk Parish Registers collection. I went to view one just now and received the "This image is unavailable for online viewing at this time" message, but after about twelve page reloads the message changed to "Image not available". When I went to the parish page within the collection I discovered images for that period were indeed no longer available - the only options were to view records for more recent periods.

These images, like those relating to many other Norfolk parish records, appear to have been withdrawn from FamilySearch. The lesson here being not just to save images important to you in Family Tree, but to download to a file on your hard drive, too, so they do remain available for you to view if FamilySearch no longer has the rights to display them.
