A List of unresolved discussion threads about or associated with the new user interface.

First, feel free to keep bumping this to the top of the discussion list. Second, these are the threads for which varying levels of concerns or problems have been reported. They may or may not repeat what are in other discussion threads, but these are the ones that I am following. In a few cases, I've added a comment about the number of new threads that have results since the thread I'm following has started.

Font Size Issues https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... -- This is perhaps the most often repeated thread. In this particular thread I have identified the problem with the hard-to-read text (sizes). I have also indicated that some monitor modes can resolve the problem. We need acknowledgment that this is going to be addressed or is in the process of being addressed. There are associated issues, but this particular thread concentrates almost exclusively on the readability issue.

Change the 'X' to close -- this has been raised only a couple of times, but the use of the single letter has bothered more than one user (including myself). The old interface used the word Close, which removed any confusion. https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

Tagging Sources -- This is a carry over from before the new user interface was rolled to production. It deals with the fact that all events and facts with their conclusions need to be tagged with the relevant sources. While this is not a bug, it would be nice to get an update on whether or not this will be addressed -- ever. The changes to the interface have an adverse impact in a number of areas, and will make tagging individual events with the relevant source difficult and require reworking the way Other Information is displayed. https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

Minor bug that needs to be corrected for the portrait pedigree view -- https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... Need to know if this has been logged or not as something that needed to be fixed.

Mapping issue -- Several different threads were posted before this one, but have now well disappeared off the most recent pages. The problem is that only the first instance of a location is highlighted in the timeline. This discussion carries a suggested solution to the issue. Need to know if this has been noted and is somewhere in the system (as a bug or as a feature to be implemented). https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

There are two "Research Help" issues (there are actually several more -- all related. We need an update on what is being done with dropped features that specified which couples and persons were involved in the old user interface, but not in the new user interface. Missing Child -- https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... and Couple May Have Children -- https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

Filtered Event (in Change log) Issue. https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... This is where the Tagging Sources problem takes an additional hit. There are actually three related problems in this thread: 1) Filter does not work on the individual "Other Information " entry. 2) Past Contributor count is incorrect. The "move" had only one contributor -- me. Even going down the entire filtered change log, only two contributors are listed - me and FamilySearch. 3) Restore does not show up on recently Custom Event removals. We need to know whether these are being addressed, bugs logged, or if nothing is going to be done (despite the fact that when individual "Other Information" events and fact can be tagged with the relevant sources, item 1 will be a major roadblock.

Marriage Place problem in couple relationship area... This appears to be a problem that is new to the new user interface, despite very little of the couple relationship area was impacted. The "standard" is being displayed, rather than the user-interred place. https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... -- We need to know if this has been noted as a bug to be fixed or not.

Ordinance Status icon is missing from the Ordinance tab -- BUG. This was created when the mini-scroll bar issue was fixed. This needs to be fixed, but if not going to be addressed soon, then a status on whether it has been logged or not for repair. https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... -- This is another often-mentioned concern/issue.

There were several other "Bugs" but were noted by FS personnel. In some cases, the TW-xxxx number was noted, in others, the bug was acknowledged.

If possible, will someone check to see whether these have been noted on the bug list, or placed on a feature list 'to be developed.'

Thanks.

  • There are several new issues that have been brought up over the past day or so. I will likely add them to this list.

Any that any of you can think of, please feel free to add those to the list, and include links to the applicable discussion thread.

Let's try to follow what Joe Martel asked us to do and limited each thread to just one issue or concern (I admit that I haven't always done that). Where possible suggest an improvement or solution, which can then be discussed.
    • I will likely start a thread on Feature Requests that may or may not involve the new user interface. The Mapping Issue is really a feature enhancement request, but because there is only one place (out of many) highlighted with the new interface, I've included it on the list.

For updates, including threads that have additional pertinent information, I'll post the "title" of the issue in bold and reference what ever is involved. The next reply is an example.

Once a response has been received from FS personnel (with or without any reference to a logged item), I consider the issue at least temporarily resolved.

I cannot help being amused (although the word is somewhat of a misnomer, I guess) at the fact I once posted a suggestion that, to avoid glitches that appeared every time there was a "minor" update, any changes should only be implemented through less frequent major updates.

How silly that suggestion now seems given the huge amount of problems in this major update / new user interface! It seems regardless of the size of any update or change, glitches / bugs, or whatever other description fits the issue, are bound to occur. Or are they?

As I (from my working experiences) and others have pointed out, more robust user testing in beta and extending any deadline to put this into production would surely have saved so much of the remedial work the development team have been subjected to.

One of the best lessons to be learned from all of this is users should be informed, say, a couple of weeks before the "just about ready for release" new version is due. Experienced users can then get heavily into the beta version to examine and report all the possible / actual problems. Of course some of these would be missed, but I'm certain many of the problems could have been sorted in beta if involvement in testing had been far more widespread.

Many of the Family Tree users who regularly use this forum are really experts in the field, so please utilise their knowledge and skills. Even the problems that WERE mentioned on this forum were seemingly ignored, however. But all this is "forgivable" as long as lessons have been truly learned from this exercise.

  • * Biggest issue that came out of this, is that there is no true bug-reporting process for the users. These forums are it -- and bugs fight for viewability with every other response. Under the current system, there is rarely any indication as to whether we're being heard.
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * FSID management needs work. FSID's carry a distinct pattern that should be recognized by the system with some automatic forgiveness in entry. And the copy ID function should only copy the ID, not any extra white space. This may be a problem with certain browsers, or certain (perhaps historic) versions of those browsers.
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * While the new version did not *create* this next issue, more people are discovering the issue as they adapt to the new system. Each person on a given record should only be attached to a specific profile once. System needs to understand that it is a multi-user system, and check whether the document is already attached to the individual just before attachment. It may have been attached since the user opened the review attachments tab. See Jeff Wiseman's examples here:
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * Potential duplicates are now a data problem. I don't mind, but then treat them as every other data problem. See my illustration here:
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * Same Place / Same House is not a standardized place. Please mark it as such:
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * On the tree view, we don't see consistent displays of what work may need to be done for a profile:
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * The pop-up edit screens are scaled or filtered in some way that makes them look fuzzy. Correct this issue -- its hard on people's eyes. Correct the major browsers on the two major systems and other browsers should fall in line. (Chrome, Firefox, Edge on Win; Safari, Chrome, Firefox on Mac)
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * Sometimes one of the parents of a child is known, while the other has not been discovered yet. Would like the ability restored to add a child with unknown parent.
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * Unable to request someone marked as deceased to be set back to living:
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * With the split-tab approach, there's less to veiw on each tab, so much of the need for the More / Less buttons has been removed. Now they just necessitate extra clicks for no reason.
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * The tool to add a new person was strangely botched. It still gives a scrollable list of people -- but for each person found, the listing takes up more space, and the reminder of the information that I'm wanting to compare now scrolls with the listing. Which means after about the third listing, I can no longer see and compare with the details I entered.
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * Now that we're seeing sources supplied at the edit entry screen for the vital information, it looks odd when this is not supplied (but easily could be!)

    • Dan Shellman. You misunderstood. I don't want "Same House" "Same Place" to be standardized. As stated above (I *want* it to be marked as non-standardized), and as clearly illustrated in the thraed that I referenced -- I want them to always be red-marked. But they're not. There are several profiles where they are coming up without any kind of mark (no map pins, no red-mark -- even though no standard link has been identified) or they are showing with map pins (as if they are standardized). These should *always* be red-marked. The developers need to identify why they are *not* always red-marked.
    • My apologies. You are correct, it should always show the red exclamation point.

In order to keep this post even handed, how about also going back through the posts and also listing all problems that have been corrected? For example:
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...
is now resolved and links on the source page are working properly now.

Also, the temple icon is back.

There were also several other problems that were promptly fixed.

I also think it is only fair to divide this into four different posts:

    1) Critical bugs - programming problems that clearly interfere with working on the web site such as the problem on the source page that in which clicking on one URL opened a different URL. These are bugs that need to be corrected promptly.

    2) Major bugs - programming problems that decrease the effectiveness of the site but have simple if annoying work a rounds such as the temple icon temporarily disappearing. These are bugs that should be correct soon.

    3) Minor bugs - programming problems that have no effect in working on the site such as the small scroll bars on the menu line under the header which other than affecting appearance of the page don't matter at all. These are bugs that should be ignored until everything else is taken care of.

    4) Design changes - program redesigns of features that are now working perfectly fine as they were intended to do but have had unintended consequences or have in practice turned out to maybe not have been the best idea such as the Family section display collapsing to two columns even on huge monitors. These are likely going to take months of design and programming work and we are going to have to accept that.

I also want to mention that over the past years on this board I have seen dozens of error reports which have resulted in very fast repairs. It has been clear that all error reports were taken seriously and promptly addressed even though that process was not on public display here.

    • The only problem identified above that I can see as critical and needing an immediate fix is the dead-to-living process. This has security implications. All the others are bothersome, with varying degrees of programming involved, but not show-stoppers.
    • I agree, but the problem is older than when the new user interface was rolled to production. There are several that need attention and include:

      * A means to correct (add to and change) index entries.
      * A means to add and enter conclusions to Couple events that are not pre-programmed
      * Stop the GEDCOM upload process at the end of the upload and prevent using the compare and add/change/mangle Family Tree via the add and change features.
      * The process of changing a person from deceased to living needs to freeze that profile until support has had an opportunity to review the proof and complete the process.

  • Per Gordon's request -- issues I've noticed that have been reported and fixed.

    * Initial issues with the search function. I saw a few threads opened on this in one way or another. Here was my own submission.
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * Sources tab cut and paste. Working now.
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * Able to add child with unknown parent again.
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...
    https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * I'm having trouble locating any of the threads on this, but there was initially an issue with the system generating family group sheets for non-LDS members. That has been resolved.

I am quite certain there were likely several others that have been fixed, but that I've forgotten or did not impact my use of the system.

  • Font Size Issue -- this is apparently being worked on. When I opened a profile that I was working on just now, the text seemed a lot clearer. Upon inspection, the text had the word 'test' in it. Not sure what that was referring to, but to my eyes, things definitely looked sharper and more clear.

Note the 'Description' text and conclusion is still too small, but it is readable.

  • David Wynn wrote somewhere above: "The tool to add a new person was strangely botched", and linked the discussion that points out the problem with the person you're trying to compare to scrolling off the screen (https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...).

There's another problem with the "add person" tool: the offered possible matches do not have any links to the people's profiles. A couple of relevant threads:

  • Tom

Your opening words for this topic: "First, feel free to keep bumping this to the top of the discussion list."

It is now 25 days since anyone contributed to this thread, although there have been other issues raised since, of course, that may / may not be directly associated to the introduction of the "new user interface".

I wonder if you might wish to kindly update us regarding the current status of these problems - excepting those detailed above as having been resolved. Of late, we have seen few visits to this forum from the "two Tylers" or other members of the development team, so I wonder if this means they have been concentrating on these reported issues and this means there is now very little outstanding.

Naturally, there are items that now seem unlikely to be addressed - such as the requests to reverse the change that led to placing of Notes & Discussions into a separate Collaboration section. But do you have a note of any unresolved, reported problems - especially those caused by glitches / bugs? Or, for that matter, does anybody else?
    • view 2 more comments
    • I see what you mean. I wonder if there is something in the underlying data that can't be fixed and if we will just have to fix them one by one as we run across them without the aid of red flag. Have you noticed whether adding "Same Place" through attaching the residence from the 1940 census via the source linker causes the problem? That is how the entry always gets onto records. Everyone I know in the 1940 census already has it attached so I don't have anyone convenient to test this out on.
    • For any profiles where I've added a 1940 census after the upgrade, I see the red-flagged 1935 Same House / Same Place. But that's just anecdotal. I can't verify across the board that we are not seeing any new instances. But the issues that I've seen have all been preexisting entries, added prior to the upgrade.

  • I started a reply to this discussion when suddenly this forum got minimized to an extreme degree. Even after closing the forum and browser (which clears a number of things) and rebooting my computer, the forum is still weird. I've increased font size (Ctrl-+) but that may not have fixed the problem. I've going to work through the list and provide an update. In the meantime, expect to see the (mostly) unresolved issues pop to the top of the list of issues.

Thank you all for bringing this list back to the forefront of the discussions. In this response, I'm addressing each issue from my list and those added by other users (thank you).

    * Font size issue: I'm not sure what was done to "fix" this issue or even if it was fixed. It may be a case that the users got used to the smaller fonts or realized it was their eyes, but at some point, things seemed to have "sharpened" making the small fonts (they were never adjusted) more clear and sharp, and more readable. If no one has any comment on this issue, then I'm with Gordon and I consider this issue resolved. https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... -- This issue is not resolved. See comments in the discussion.

    * Change the "X" to Close: While 'X' is common for closing a window, I still prefer to see 'Close' used in its place. There is no ambiguity and the term was already translated in the old UI (User Interface), so no additional work needs to be done. Since we have not seen any response (that I remember), I still consider this issue open and unresolved. https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * Tagging Sources: This is a pre- new UI issue and I do not remember seeing any response from anyone that works for FamilySearch. Recently, I have been working with non-FS resources and discovered yearly enumerations in Kansas as well as several collections of Polk Directories that provide residence and in many cases, work-related occupations. These sources, though many, still need to be tagged to the occupation, status, and residence for the individuals involved. Thus, this is an on-going and will continue to be an on-going feature request. Grouping the history for residence and for "Custom" events and facts together is, in my opinion, a big mistake and that will have to be "undone" to accommodate tagging a source to individual entries in Other Information. https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * Portrait Pedigree view drops Titles: Minor bug that needs to be corrected for the portrait pedigree view -- (Dropped Title, compared to the other pedigree views). This is still an issue. The update in the https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... discussion has new screen shots of each pedigree view, and illustrates the dropped title in the Portrait view.

    * Mapping Issue: No response that I have found on any threads about this issue, wherein only the first instance of a event place in the timeline is highlighted and there is no indicator of a) the number of events, or b) the ability to see all, the next, or the previous event. Two discussions - https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... and https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * There are two "Research Help" issues (there are actually several more): In particular Missing Children (https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...) and Couple May Have Children. W. David Samuelson added two more: Missing standardized birth date -and- Death Year before Marriage. All three (Couple May Have Children and W. David's two) are in the https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... discussion. The problem is the ambiguity of the message, something that was at least partially fixed prior to the roll-out of the new UI. Still not addressed.

    * Filtered Event (in Change log) Issue: This is where the Tagging Sources problem takes an additional hit. There are actually three two related problems in this thread: 1) Filter does not work on the individual "Other Information " entry. 2) Past Contributor count is incorrect. The "move" had only one contributor -- me. Even going down the entire filtered change log, only two contributors are listed - me and FamilySearch. 3) Restore does not show up on recently Custom Event removals (This third item has been resolved). We need to know whether these are being addressed, bugs logged, or if nothing is going to be done (despite the fact that when individual "Other Information" events and fact can be tagged with the relevant sources, item 1 will be a major roadblock. The solution is simple: Do not lump all Custom Events together. https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * Marriage Place problem in couple relationship area. This appears to be a problem that is new to the new user interface, despite very little of the couple relationship area was impacted. The "standard" is being displayed, rather than the user-interred place. Issue Resolved!

    * Ordinance Status icon is missing from the Ordinance tab -- Issue Resolved

    * No Bug Reporting process (David Wynn added issue): Biggest issue that came out of this, is that there is no true bug-reporting process for the users. These forums are it -- and bugs fight for viewability with every other response. Under the current system, there is rarely any indication as to whether we're being heard. https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... -- Tyler Peterson responded: I would mark this idea as under consideration, but it is about the company as a whole, and not just my part to tend. (pb) For my part, my teams work on FamilyTree. We are currently evaluating our practices for engaging with the user community, tracking defects, and tracking suggestions. (pb) It is our intention to increase our presence on GetSatisfaction because we already have access to it and a user base. We are evaluating what we can do, and what we can commit to doing in the future. He also added several other comments, but for now, I consider this an issue that has yet to be resolved. Note: FamilySearch is infamous for not providing adequate user documentation with changes are rolled to production, especially those that have an impact on the User experience.

    * FSID [PID] management needs work (David Wynn added issue): FSID's carry a distinct pattern that should be recognized by the system with some automatic forgiveness in entry. And the copy ID function should only copy the ID, not any extra white space. This may be a problem with certain browsers, or certain (perhaps historic) versions of those browsers. FSID's carry a distinct pattern that should be recognized by the system with some automatic forgiveness in entry. And the copy ID function should only copy the ID, not any extra white space. This may be a problem with certain browsers, or certain (perhaps historic) versions of those browsers. https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... deals with case problems. Still an issue.
Resolved but related: https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... and https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... with the browser issue of adding spaces before and/or after the copy ID function in the new UI. This issue (at least with Firefox) appears to have been fixed.

    * (David Wynn added issue): While the new version did not *create* this next issue, more people are discovering the issue as they adapt to the new system. Each person on a given record should only be attached to a specific profile once. System needs to understand that it is a multi-user system, and check whether the document is already attached to the individual just before attachment. It may have been attached since the user opened the review attachments tab. -- I don't know if this has been resolved or not. The example provided by Jeff Wiseman may have been resolved by the user or by fixing a bug in the code that allowed the same source to be listed more than once. Jeff further commented For what it's worth, my experience is that when there are true duplicates, even if the system has time to find them, it cannot fix them. It requires some kind of manual intervention to correct them. If I am wrong on this, please let me know. But the ones I've seen can last for months and still be there. (pb) Actually, I've been calling them duplicates, but technically they are the same exact sources that have been illegally attached to either the same or different people multiple times. https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * (David Wynn added): Potential duplicates are now a data problem. I don't mind, but then treat them as every other data problem. https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... deals with a request to not list the possible duplicates as a data problem. I'm with David on this one -- they really do represent a data problem. In my opinion, this is a non-issue.

    * (David Wynn added issue): Same Place / Same House is not a standardized place -- the problem is that the flag is being applied inconsistently (sometimes with a red exclamation and others with a map pin). I do not know if this has been resolved or not, but David reported this as Still an issue. Same Place is still often reporting as a valid location when its not 7 days ago. I feel this is a bug that needs to be addressed. The standards team also agrees that "Same Place and Same House" are not in the standards and should not be.

    * (David Wynn added issue): On the tree view, we don't see consistent displays of what work may need to be done for a profile. See https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... for details. David Wynn reports from 7 days ago that Issue still persists. Research indicators in tree not properly reflecting research indicators in profile.

    * (David Wynn added issue): The pop-up edit screens are scaled or filtered in some way that makes them look fuzzy. Correct this issue -- its hard on people's eyes. Correct the major browsers on the two major systems and other browsers should fall in line. (Chrome, Firefox, Edge on Win; Safari, Chrome, Firefox on Mac) -- This appears to have been resolved with the "Font Size Issue" https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * (David Wynn added issue): Sometimes one of the parents of a child is known, while the other has not been discovered yet. Would like the ability restored to add a child with unknown parent. This appears to have been resolved.

    * (David Wynn added issue): Unable to request someone marked as deceased to be set back to living (Resolved -- https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...

    * (David Wynn added issue): With the split-tab approach, there's less to veiw on each tab, so much of the need for the More / Less buttons has been removed. Now they just necessitate extra clicks for no reason. This has been resolved for Notes and Discussions. The problem in the https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... discussion that applied to "Other Information" has been resolved with a scroll slider. The problem still exists for the Life Sketch and Source citations.

    * (David Wynn added issue): The tool to add a new person was strangely botched. It still gives a scrollable list of people -- but for each person found, the listing takes up more space, and the reminder of the information that I'm wanting to compare now scrolls with the listing. Which means after about the third listing, I can no longer see and compare with the details I entered. See https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... -- I don't know if the scrolling issue for the list of possible matches found has been fixed or not.

    * (David Wynn added issue): Now that we're seeing sources supplied at the edit entry screen for the vital information, it looks odd when this is not supplied (but easily could be!) Resolved -- The zero sources now shows the same screen as when there are sources, but with Tag 0 and no source links.

    * (Gordon Collett added issue resolved): Bug Report: Strange Behavior on the Source Page

    * (Older problem): A means to correct (add to and change) index entries. Still a major issue with numerous threads continuing to point out the problems. Irritating because it has been reported this has simply not had a high enough priority to get resolved!

    * (Older problem): A means to add and enter conclusions to Couple events that are not pre-programmed. The most irritating part of this is the push-back I've seen from Ron Tanner and others, as if this is not an issue. Yet, there are many couple relationship events and facts that are not considered and have to be shoved into the notes in the couple-relationship area. Joe Martel agrees that this needs to be addressed, but doesn't have the authority to make it happen.

    * (Older problem): Stop the GEDCOM upload process at the end of the upload and prevent using the compare and add/change/mangle Family Tree via the add and change features. I don't know how many discussions or how many people support stopping the GEDCOM upload process at the point where the GEDCOM file has been added to Genealogies. While we recognize that most of the problems are with inexperienced users of FamilySearch, the real problem is that this is the only process that actually instructs a person to add people from their GEDCOM file into FamilyTree or change existing information.

    * (David Wynn reported : Initial issues with the search function. I saw a few threads opened on this in one way or another. Here was my own submission.

    * (Juli reported problem): There's another problem with the "add person" tool: the offered possible matches do not have any links to the people's profiles. See https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... -- Juli reported that, "the "add person" procedure _does_ offer possible matches, but because there's no longer a right-clickable link that will take you to the relevant profile, you can't check whether they're actually matches or not. It takes three or four extra steps to do something that should take one." Also See https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea.... -- I don't know if this is resolved or not. Gordon Collett reports: "There's another problem with the "add person" tool: the offered possible matches do not have any links to the people's profiles. - this has been fixed and all names on this screen, the individual and any spouse or parents are all now links that can be opened in new tabs."

    * Date does not properly propagate. https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...) -- this may be a display issue. See the screen shots in the discussion. In some cases, the user-entered date is displayed, but in other instances, the "standardized" date is displayed, even on the same (new UI) page. This may also impact other dates, but I have not tested for them.

I don't remember if this was ever tracked, but it needs to be. I recently ran into a situation where someone removed an image, replacing the photo with the silhouette. I wanted to message the person who did that and ask why they removed the photo.

Would it really be too much effort for a FamilySearch employee to make a contribution to this thread? Perhaps something along the lines of:

"Thank you, Tom, for the time and effort you are applying in identifying previously reported issues, which have now either been fixed or are still outstanding. Users can be assured we are doing out utmost to address the unresolved issues and would be grateful if you could please bear with us for the time being."

Now, how much trouble was it for me to type that?

  • Issue Resolved -- When any page is scrolled, the header with the name of the person is scrolled out of view. This has been resolved with the header condensed to one line and the remaining condensed name and basic dates, along with the tabs now remain at the top of the screen while the page is scrolled. I did not have this previously in the list of unresolved issues.

  • New issue (new feature):

    * (Raised by Jeanne Koniuszy - https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea...): Temporarily dismiss, as needed, "Ordinance Ready" selected ordinances where the profile is incomplete or otherwise questionable, in favor of another that is truly complete. Move the profile into a "profile needs further work" type of list, flagging the reservation back to the originator and/or adding it to the patron (who noticed the discrepancy) list of profiles "to review". The Ordinance Ready is a relatively new feature that needs additional work and this is one area where a potential problem exists.

  • Associated with the font size issue: * (David Wynn added issue): The pop-up edit screens are scaled or filtered in some way that makes them look fuzzy. Correct this issue -- its hard on people's eyes. Correct the major browsers on the two major systems and other browsers should fall in line. (Chrome, Firefox, Edge on Win; Safari, Chrome, Firefox on Mac).

RealMac added this to this element: It is not only "elderly" users who find the fine print difficult to read. Also, it is not only FamilySearch that has contributed to this problem, I see the same thing on many other web sites.

Web designers, following the current fashion, have been using unsaturated colors (notably "gray") colors for text, especially small text. Considering what "gray" looks like at the pixel level (a mixture of black and colored pixels, thus without a sharp edge), this is a singularly bad choice if the goal is legibility even at small font sizes, even if it is esthetically correct.

Also, modern screens don't display all colors at the expected intensity when viewed from an angle, and modern desks/tables/laps usually make us view the screen from exactly the wrong angle to see all of the colors correctly. Right now, I'm viewing this screen about 20 to 30 degrees higher than optimal for seeing the correct colors -- with the result that the yellowish and bluish backgrounds and gray text that surround the "Reply to This Topic" window look very pale and mainly gray. Why am I looking at the screen this way? It's because the correct height of the keyboard for typing places the firmly attached screen on my laptop too low, and there isn't enough room on my desk to tilt the screen far enough back to assure the correct viewing angle. Besides, in some situations, tilting the screen far enough back for optimal viewing makes the laptop unsteady to the point of falling over. I suspect many of us are viewing our screens from the wrong angle and not seeing what the web designers believe to be their scientifically optimized fonts.

When I go through this list and compile it for a new thread of resolved and unresolved issues, I'll make sure this issue is among the unresolved issues.

  • I've known about this, but evidently did not place it in this list of unresolved issues. This may be nothing more than something that got broken or it may have been on purpose with relationship to legacy discussions.
