Adding a related Step Child by ID# when attaching records listing a step parent..

I have a family where the wife remarried. The wife and her 2nd husband are listed on the 1900 US Census with the wife's daughter. The daughter is listed as a step-daughter. I want to add the 1900 US census record to her but it only allows a NEW entry. It would be helpful if I could add her information by searching on her ID# at the same time I'm adding the record to her Mother and Step-father.

  • When you click Add for the step daughter (and you know the ID of the person being added), I do not remember if you can select the person via the ID or not, but I believe that you can.

Regardless, after the record is attached, go to the step-daughter's page and she should appear in Family Members under two sets of parents on the right side of that section.

In her birth parents record, she should appear as biological with her father.

In her step father's parent record, expand her out as a child by clicking on the little note/pencil icon. There you can Add her relationship type as "Step" or, as was the case for my Aunt, "Adopted". You can specify the date and reason for adding this type. If Biological still shows, click on the word and there you can delete the relationship.

This workaround can be used when the person is already in the tree as a biological child of a non-biological parent.

Other relationships include guardian, something that is important when (again, in an instance that I had in my family) a child was born as a "one-night stand" where the name of the father was not known or recorded. We knew that her mother and the child lived with the mother's parents, who raised the child. So we marked, even though no legal record was found, the child under her grandparents with a relationship of guardian.

    Carol,
There are two, often overlooked, portions of the source linker, one of which will solve your problem.

First is the right sided Change button:

Click on that and either put in the ID number of the child or choose her from the drop down list. That will put her as the focus person on the Family Tree half of the screen. The left hand, record side of the Source Linker should then be able to automatically line her up. If not, click on the left sided Change button and choose her from the historical record to make her line up.

Second is the Choose Spouse button. It's the little grey sideways pointing triangle in the spouse area:

Clicking here allows you choose the correct spouse or add a new one. When the spouse is changed, that brings the children associated with that spouse into the area where you can attach records to them.

Notice how the above image changes when I change spouses:

  • Thank you,
I could use some more help with this. Can you make a few video clips showing how to solve this type of problem. I'm more a visual, hearing, step by step person.
    Thank you again.
