I’m diasppointed

Let us download information in GEDCOM format

I have not had chance to investigate the new site very much, but one glaring omission appears to be the loss of the GEDCOM download facility.
I used this a lot! It enabled me to ged FamilySearch data into Reunion without transcription errors.
It seems that in reply to another questioner "The company has not planned to implement this." Please reconsider.

  • If you go to the bottom of the page and click "Use the previous version of FamilySearch.org" you will find it where it always has been.

  • Firstly may I say a big 'thank you' to all those who are transcribing new records. But Please, please could we have the old facility back to download records as a GEDCOM?? Or at least the facility to display a search in spreadsheet format? Many of us are trying to discover where a surname originated and how it spread.

  • I’m seriously frustrated
How can we download the internet pedigree and family group information for use off line or distribution to NON-LDS family and software programs. I find myself in the field with my laptop and not able to connect to the internet.

  • You can download a PAF file from new.familysearch.org using
    "Get My Ancestors" by ohanasoftware.com.

    ALLOW ANCESTRAL FILE DOWNLOADS
I have been a fan of the beta site and love the new changes. However, there is one ability that appears to be missing that really stops me. I am used to being able to view ANCESTRAL FILE pedigrees and downloading. The new Ancestral File display does not permit this.
I realize that the information is not perfect, but it is such an easy way to jump and get started. My new daughter-in-law wanted me to put things together for her. Where do I go to be able to download AF information? If this is not now available, please reconsider and reinstate. THANK YOU!

  • I’m thankful
Although new.FamilySearch does not provide for electronic downloading of information from the site, it can be done using third party software. There are two primary ways to do this. Information can be downloaded one name at a time using Ancestral Quest, Family Insight, Legacy or Roots Magic.

You can download several (1 to 10+) generations of either ancestors or decedents using Get My Ancestors (from Ohana Software), Ancestral Quest or Roots Magic. As far as I can tell Legacy does not have this feature. I would suggest using this feature with a new file and only downloading a few generations at a time since you will want to verify the validity of the data before you include it in your primary file and more than 3 or 4 generations can tie up your computer for some time. Once downloaded you can convert the data to a GEDCOM file quite easily - if you wish. One thing to remember is that data for only one husband or wife of an individual is downloaded. If you wish data for another wife or husband you need to do another download beginning with that individual and then link the data in your file. Get My Ancestors is an excellent program but Roots Magic and Ancestral Quest download a little more information.

This is great for those who have Windows PCs and have already bought one of the packages noted. But AFAIK there are no Mac OS packages that have the facility - I use Reunion and while I believe Leister are thinking about it, that's as far as it goes.

  • I’m at least able to get a gedcom out of New FamilySearch
I also don't run Windows usually. However, I've set up a virtual machine under VirtualBox in order to run a few programs, including Get My Ancestors. It works ok.
