Cannot add sources to source box.

Cannot add records to source box, window opens but is greyed out and little wheel keeps spinning but never completes, opened source box and verified no record added. Cleared cache, logged out and back in. Still cannot add sources to source box. Happens on all records, marriage, census, death, etc. I have to refresh page to get back to window that's not grayed out.

I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron.

I just added a "Source" to my "Source Box", with any problems/issues.

And, I then, accessed my "Source Box", there was the "Source" that I just added.

By the way, I have many "Sources" in my "Source Box (18000+).

I am using the latest version of 'Google' "Chrome" with "Windows 10".

What "Browser" and version (etc) are you using?

I just took a look at that "Source" that you provided.

That "Source" is already attached to a "Henry Frank HALL" ( LCZG-47Z ).

The strange thing is that when I try to add that particular "Source" to my "Source Box", that that "Source" has NO "Title"; and, if you "Save" that "Source" to your "Source Box", without adding a "Title"; then, the "System" does as you describe.

I do not know why the "Title" of the "Source" disappears; and, a "Title" need to be added; but, I suspect that that is part of the problem/issue, most likely as that "Source" is ALREADY attached to an individual/person.

    Just a thought.

  • Thanks for the additional info, I am using Chrome on Windows 10, both are up to date. I tried the census record again, this time adding the title and it did save to my source box. The marriage records I've tried to add to my source box also didn't have a title and are connected to the person but not on the marriage relationship. So for some reason they aren't getting a title if they are already linked to one person. Thanks for the analysis and testing, hopefully this will be fixed.

I always add the "Sources" to my "Source Box" when I am in the process of attaching the "Source" to the individual/person for the first time, in the first instance.

That is probably why I have never experienced what you have.

The "Source" is already attached to an individual/person; and, in my "Source Box" at the same time; so, I do not have any problems/issues with attaching the "Source" to a Couple Relationship from my "Source Box" - already there.

I do hope that an "Official 'FamilySearch" Representative", joins in on this post of your's to, either, confirm; or, dispel, that there is a problem/issue, as you originally posted here.

  • There are some confusing things about using the sources box that is partially because different sources need to be handled differently in some cases. In general, copying index type sources to your source box and attempting to past them elsewhere will usually produce unexpected and incorrect results. Here's my thoughts on what you are seeing.

Depending on where your research is coming from, usually the most common sources are index related (i.e., sources from hints or from simple searches using the "FamilySearch" link in the "Search Records" box on the right hand side of a Person's profile page).

If you attempt to select one of these types of sources from a person's source list and copy it into your Source Box (supposedly so that you can copy it somewhere else later on), it is logical that the system would resist that in some way, because it would be a misuse of that type of source!

Consider the fact that, in this case, the source type you are copying off of a person's source list is a citation type source that points to EXACTLY ONE person in an index record. That means that that source belongs to EXACTLY ONE person in the entire history of the world, and it is already attached to that one person's source list! (i.e., the one you are copying it from).

In other words, you cannot correctly attach that same source to anyone else in the FamilyTree database since it is ALREADY attached to the "correct" person. If you need to MOVE that source from someone that it is INCORRECTLY attached to, and then attach it to the CORRECT person, you must initially detach it from the wrong person first. This does not require the use of a Source Box at all. It is done either via the Source Linker or directly in the Source List of the person it is not supposed to be attached to.

Putting that type of a source into your source box would be meaningless and useless. It appears that the system is attempting to prevent you from doing it.

    • yea, there might very well be something else going on here as I remember being able to do this sometime in the past. But regardless of how the system is behaving at the moment, in general, copying a citation to a person in an index record into a source box is something that you probably should not be dong. If you do you will eventually wind up with that source record for a single person being attached to two different people in the FamilyTree database. One of them will be wrong and the attachment that was just made will have to be undone once the mistake is discovered.

The real power of the source box seems to be in the support of custom sources and sources referencing unindexed sources/images
    • I copy a marriage record source to the source box, so that I can then attach the marriage record source to their marriage event.

  • Dee,
Thanks for catching this. We have a bug, the save button should not be active unless there is a title. The title should be auto generated, but editable.
    We will get this fixed.
