I’m frustrated

Catalog search defaulting to Online material only

Searching the Library Catalog: some are seeing their account defaulted to searching Online records only, rather than Any records. This is limiting the results and not allowing books available in the FHL/FHC to show in the results. Is the Online radio button new? Can it NOT be set as the default?

  • I don't know how you are searching the catalog, but it is still showing non-digitized items for me. Windows 7, using Chrome. Also, same system, using Firefox.

Try this (you do not have to be logged into to do this search, but it doesn't matter).

    Search...
    Catalog
    Place: United States, Iowa
    Search
    Select United States, Iowa - Bibliography ( 6 )
Select the top entry, Iowa authors and their works : a contribution toward a bibliography
When it opens, note that it is a book and available at the Family History Library.

More and more films are being digitized. If a film is available, It will be listed down the page, under Film/Digital Notes. Just above that is where the film can be located, usually set to the Family History Library. Clicking on the field will reveal where else the film is located.

Note: Mobile apps work differently and may not reflect what I can see on a computer with a browser.

  • I'm an employee on the Collections team at the FHL. We have had several guests and missionaries with this issue today. It appears to only affect some - was there a recent rolling update to accounts? I'm on a PC, with Windows 10, using Chrome.

The initial search worked just fine, but if I wanted to edit or change the search in the left-side search window there were two radio buttons below the search boxes, one that said Online, which appeared to be the default, and one that said Any which would search all libraries. Within the last 15 minutes these buttons have disappeared! For mine, the missionaries, and the guests who initially had the problem. So maybe a new release was rolled back. I'm hoping the engineers will see this and check the default setting before it is rolled out again.
    Thanks!

    • Okay. Your patrons must have gotten lucky and caught the feature "out in the wild".

Regardless, if they do offer the radio options of search "All" (not any, which is a bad and meaning less term) or "Online Only", they need to set "All" as the default and consider "Online Only" to be a filter. The placement in the left column is also a bad choice, since it needs to be at the top of the search results, along with "Collections"
    • If it is added to the left-hand column, then it will likely appear under 'Type" which right now will not open and moves the screen back to the top of the results page.

In fact, there should be no default, but allow All or Online to be selectable. That whole page is in need of some serious rework.

  • According to Ron Tanner, FamilySearch is constantly having new code moved into production. It can happen once, twice, or many times in just one day, or even one hour.

This thread may have alerted the engineers to the problem and thus, the new code was "rolled" back out of production.

  • You can still see non-online items. Just click the button beside FHC (directly under "online") and you'll see the search results as you are used to them.

  • Can there be a way to set a specific computer to the default desired? Guests (and missionaries) in the Family History Library are extremely frustrated that they cannot find anything on the shelves because they don't know to check for the Online button to change it.

  • I’m Disappointed that this feature is a big FAIL!
I just checked and am going to open a new thread. The radio buttons are a very bad idea.

I do not want to limit my search to those catalog entries for online or availability at a given repository.
