Change the Family Tree view for singles back to its original.

The new Family Tree view for single people is not very good. It will no longer place me in the principal position and it makes it harder to print my own four generation pedigree chart. It is also confusing when I enter Family Tree because I am accustomed to looking at the principal position instead of the children.

  • I agree. When I found I could not put me in the main position it made me fell like a second class person since I was not married. It was demeaning. My siblings I can put in the main position but not me. It makes me angry. There is no other genealogical program that I know of that I can't be in the main position. Change it back.

  • That is an interesting bug you two have identified. I'm sure no one did it on purpose and the programmers probably haven't even noticed. The more complex the program, the more difficult it becomes to test all possible situations or even to think of all the obvious situations to test for. That is why this board is here to report such issues.

So for the programming engineers, here is what they have found:

When I sign on, my wife and I appear in the central node of the tree with our children to the left and our parents to the right as it should be.

When I click on my son's name, who is single, to open his summary card and click on "view tree" he moves to the central node with his mother and I to the right and nothing to left, just as you would expect.

When my son signs on, my wife and I still appear in the central node of the tree. When he clicks on his name to open the summary card and clicks on "view tree," nothing changes. He does not move to the central node.

If he goes to his own person page, clicking on "Pedigree" to generate a pedigree chart works just fine. If on that page he clicks "view tree," the thee that appears still has him stuck in the child position.

It does seem strange that I can move him to the central node but he cannot move himself there.

I believe it is a patch for people who complained that they saw a blank because they were not married and they were discouraged when it showed a place for the spouse which they did not have. There are some get satisfactions threads to this effect. So the developers decided a simple fix was to make them a child and not allow them to be seen needing a spouse. However, because of the way it was programmed now they cannot move their record to the primary position in the pedigree and others do not like the solution. Apparently it is a flag which prevents them from doing it but you as a relative who can see their record do not have the flag so you can move them.

Another example of not clearly thinking about the consequences of a change. Just like sorting on the given name in the temple list. Someone needs to evaluate these changes before they are implemented.

I did read those threads but didn't catch there might be a connection to this. So this might be a good cautionary tale for people complaining too stridently that something relatively minor has to be fixed, NOW! It might be much better to express oneself's calmly and give the engineers a year to come up with a good solution.

  • Thanks for bringing this to light. Teachers of Family Tree need to know this.

  • I like the change. The previous version had a lot of lost space.
