I’m worried

We need a simple print button that produces a precise printout without paper waste.

Printing from the new Family History Library Catalog - It's nice to have larger print, but I think you went overboard on the headings and spacing. They are too big. This means that often the catalog entry must be printed on multiple pages at additional cost. Also the commands, "Print" and "Back to search results", do not need to be printed.

  • Printing library catalog information from the new beta site.

When I get ready to go to SLC, I go through the items I am looking for on the library catalog and print them out. I then have 1 sheet for each item that I can put in book call number order and microfilm number order. This allows me to be more efficient in the library.

I just tried printing an item from the "old" catalog and then from the "new" catalog. From the old catalog it printed on one sheet of paper. It also has the call number right under the most important info so that if I needed to I could tell my printer to print page 1 only and still get the data I need most.

The new catalog printed it on 2 sheets of paper. If I told my printer to print page 1 only, I would have had to remember to write down the call number. The print is way too big; I definitely do not need a magnifier. If you could bring the "Copies/Call Number" info up under the "subject class" information, it would help alot.

Just in case you need it I was printing information on "Masterful women slaveholding widows from the Amerian Revolution through the Civil War".

I am trying to give the "new" system a chance, but I really do not understand having to change it in the first place. New is not always better.

  • I’m disappointed
On the subject of the Family History Library catalog ... I recently compared searching for District Court Naturalization records in Illinois, on the old and new Family Search. I really like the way the new Family Search sorts the 13 catalog items in date order and puts the earliest dates at the top!

There was one thing that disappointed me, with the new Family Search. I like to print out a page of the listing that I want to look up when I go to the library, and put notes on the paper, of who I plan to look for. In the new Family Search, I clicked on the little printer icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen to print a listing I wanted to look up. It printed out two pages, for a listing that the old Family Search only printed one (actually 2/3 of a page on the old Family Search). It would be nice if the new Family Search had an option for selecting a print optimized choice. The printout from the new Family Search was a larger typeface, so was easy to read, but at the rate I print out listings to look up, I would go through a lot more paper than I already do, especially if there are two pages that print out, for every one page that I used to print out.

I really appreciate the fact that you have a button on the new Family Search, that gives a person the option of going back to the old, if they wish.

Thanks for all the improvements that are being made!
    Sincerely,
    Kay Jorgensen

PLEASE carry over the 'old family search' record printing for specific locations. The 'new' family search record printing wastes too many pages of paper for unimportant information totally unrelated to the location (at least 2). Thanks!!!

In order to print out the film numbers of a collection of 11 films, I was indundated with 3 pages of information, much of it extraneous. The older format of offering a printer friendly, condensed listing of films, is a much better option.

Printing of one page of the 1900 Census took three pieces of paper. This could be reduced to give only the pertinent information and not all the unnecessary stuff, i.e., Learn, General, Resources, etc., that is not pertinent to the printed content.

The printout from the classic familysearch library catalog was concise and easy to use. The wastefully large, confusing printouts I'm getting from the updated website are a disappointment to me. Can we go back to a plain black & white rendition of the facts we need, please? Thank you for all the hard work you are putting into this amazing resource!

  • It would be good if the England Births and Christenings information (after pressing the print button) would print on just one page (as seen on the screen) instead of over 3 pages.
I resort to using 'print screen' and using another program to cut it to size. The print button on the Norfolk Parish Registers pages is great, you can choose exactly what you want printed.

Printing from the FHL Catalog: It would be good to be able to print the list of source titles found in a catalog search, and also to print a page for each source found that is formatted like it was in the old FamilySearch (concisely). Right now it prints a lot of extraneous information on many pages. I know you are probably working on optimizing the printing, and just want to say I support this and it will be a great help.
Printing from Historical Records: It would be nice to have more source information on the printout for a document. Thanks very much.

  • I would really love to see some work done on making records from the Historical Record Collections more printable. Currently when I click the 'print' icon in the top left corner this is what I get:

It would be great if the format was something like this:

Here is what I did in my version:

    - a small FamilySearch logo (so it is a bit more official and you know where it came from)

    - the record title (ex: Sweden Baptisms, 1611-1920)

    - the actual transcript of the record

    - followed by a small brief paragraph of what the record and collection is

    - finally if there is an image, print it on a 2nd page where it take up the whole space.

  • I’m Disappointed
Regarding the printing of search results ... In the pilot version, the individual search results summary page is scaled to print on one page and has a very neat, professional look. I like this. Unfortunately, the beta version print is just a "print screen" that results in a much larger print size which runs over onto two pages with no way of scaling it back to one page. I don't like this. I would suggest going back to the much more professional looking pilot version for printing individual summary results.

  • I’m unsure why this was overlooked
THis site needs some easily clickable links similar to those found on Ancestry, Find my Past, Genes Reunited, My Heritage, World Vital records and other genealogy sites.

1.... A very visible (dark type face) link to a printable version of the page the person is viewing - that is a version without the fancy headers, side indexes and extraneous spacing. You had this in the old catalog search and it worked beautifully - recreate it for the new site. printing from the present pages - wastes paper and therefore resources, trees, water etc.

    2. The batch number and the film/source number on a search result should be a clickable link to search only the records from that batch or source. This has been discussed in many other places and is necessary for the patron to reap the full benefits of the library. If the source is also browsable that should also have a link.

  • I’m Hopeful
I have raised this topic as a way for users to provide input to staff on what we would like with regard to the ability to easily Copy and Print in future versions of Beta. I am also starting similar topics for: Search Criteria; Search Accuracy; Results Page Layout; Search Form Layout; Ease of Reviewing Records and maybe more. Your input may fit in more than one topic - that's O.K

    Here is my want:

I want a simple button to push to copy the data in the record and a button to push to print the data in the record. I want a button to copy images when that is allowed. I want a button to print images when that is allowed.

I do not want to have to use the mouse to select the data I want to copy -- it is time consuming and often results in copying things that don't or shouldn't be copied and produces poorly formatted output. The buttons in Pilot work great and result in great looking output.

    What is your desire?

Delighted to see images of Philadelphia death cert. online. Glad to be able to zoom in on the document. When printing, however, document is too small to be readable. Wish I could print it at the zoomed level! It would also be nice if when the document prints the source (right above it) printed also. Many people will not take the time to print out the source. Would that be too difficult to execute?

  • I’m baffled
    Three Things that are needed
    1. Recognize that the new monitors are shorter and wider - greatly limiting how many results can be viewed. The previous search gave results that were tightly packed vertically - this is needed with the new monitor shape. I help at an FHC and the patrons are discouraged at the amount of scrolling that is needed.
Two - since the results appear with their source information, the ability to 'click' on that information and then search for others of interest from the same source is needed. Irealize that one can go back to the browse function and then find the source and after going through several layers of qualifying screens, manage to do something similar to the old ability with batch numbers. But, patrons used the search by batch A LOT - Please make it possible to click on the batch number or film number in an entry to search that source for similar names or families. Since you produce the info as a source, you should be able to effect a search on that numbered source
Finally we need an easy way to download or print our search results tha doesn't include all the excess spacing (see one) Patrons really apprecated the ability to take their list of results away from the computer and check it against old family papers, etc.

    (1) New catalog prints in a very large size font - takes three pages to print what took 1.5 pages in old catalog.
    (2) New catalog seems to omit the Title field from the old catalog. New catalog just says Parish Registers, whereas the old catalog would say Parish Registers, 1558-1902
