Expand Entire Tree in Decendency View

Add an option to automatically open all arrows in decendency view, so that people combing through looking for ordinances don't have to open them all manually.

When you enter the descendancy view, you can click on the 4 to fully expand the list.

When I clicked on 4, it took around a minute or more to expand the descendancy chart to just those four generations and all the children. I captured the names and details as a text file and it was over 35,000 bytes in size.

My question is whether you want to really open up the descendancy to go an unlimited number of generations toward the present or are satisfied with the four that are now used?

My sampling is with an incomplete descendancy, which I am continuing to research and add people to the massive tree. There are better methods for "mining" ordinances to do, and in reality, that is a very bad practice, because it ignores the need to fully research each person, find all the duplicates (which involves more than just using the Possible Duplicates, but also the Find search feature), and seeking out other sources that might also have more children involved with the descendants of a particular ancestor.

Please do not encourage anyone to mine the tree for ordinances without learning how to do research and also to fully flesh out a relative's records to make it "worthy of all acceptation" -- Doctrine and Covenants, section 128:24 -- "24 Behold, the great day of the Lord is at hand; and who can abide the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appeareth? For he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fuller’s soap; and he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. Let us, therefore, as a church and a people, and as Latter-day Saints, offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness; and let us present in his holy temple, when it is finished, a book containing the records of our dead, which shall be worthy of all acceptation."

As a tool, there is a better method than to ask to expand the descendancy beyond the four generation, if a person is really interested in seeking out their ancestors and relatives who appear to be ready for reserving and performing proxy temple ordinances. It is the free "Find-A-Record" App in the Research Assistance section.

It also "generates different types of research opportunities such as finding missing information, finding missing people, finding sources, and fixing problems. It also guides you through the research process and tells you how to update your ancestor's information in the Family Tree."

The last option is ordinances, which allows you to look for temple opportunities for specific ordinances.

  • What happened to the selection box of # of generations (up to 4)?
I think it was expanding descendants on its own before, as long as you had the portraits option off.
And I think it gave you more than 4 generations when you asked for the maximum 4.

I guess this was a "performance improvement" to make us go thru all the clicking to expand each child / generation manually now? Makes me prefer alternate tools such as Hope Chest.

    • Interesting.

There is some inconsistency in the operation of the display. I reached the pedigree area directly from a relative that I happened to be working on. It went to the landscape view, which was the last view that I had used. When I switched to Descendancy, the selection box was already there.

I just checked and on Win 7 with Chrome, no matter how I get to the chart, the selection box always displays, even signing in and then opening the Tree chart view.

Curious that you would not see it until you press "Expand". What system are you using, Jon?
    • Chrome ver 67.0.3396.99 (64-bit) on Windows 10.
I should have done a screen shot, because it's working now. So either a glitch or has been fixed already.
If I see it again I will screen shot it, then hit refresh to be sure.
