FAQ: Why am I tagging photos and linking to FamilyTree? What's the purpose?

When you tag a photo and then link that tagged person to the tree, it is preparing your photos to be visible in FamilyTree in the Photos tab on ithe FamilyTree Ancestor page (Person View). See https://getsatisfaction.com/familysea... for more details about the Photos tab in FamilyTree.

The first tag you create for the person will create a default portrait picture that will be used on the “People” page. You want to create just one tag for each ancestor and re-use it when you tag other photos. To re-use a tag, when you tag a picture and start typing a name, you will see a list of previously used tags. Select your ancestor from the list to re-use an existing tag.

Here's a screenshot of a people page. Notice how the people are divided into two groups, depending on whether or not they are linked to the tree.

The “People” page serves as an index or directory into the people you have tagged. You should have just one entry for each person. The “People” page separates persons who have been linked to the tree from those that have not been linked.

If you have just one tag per ancestor, you can link that tagged person to the tree and all the photos that use that tag will be linked to the tree also.

To link a tagged person from the “People” page, click on the person you want to link. You will go to the FamilySearch Photos person page and on the right side of the page you will see a list of possible matches based on the name entered for the tag.

Here's a screenshot of a person page where you can match your tagged person to FamilyTree:

If none of these people are your ancestor, you can type in a different name and click Search, or you can open a new browser window to the FamilyTree, find the ancestor you want to link, and copy their person identifer (PID) to the Name or Person ID field on the photos page and click Search. When the search results are displayed, click on the name that matches. (Hint: if you click on the PID in the search results, it will display the FamilyTree Ancestor page (person view) which may help you decide if this is really a match.)

Tagging your ancestors and linking them to the FamilyTree will make them visible in the FamilyTree Photos tab on the ancestor page.

  • This is now working in Family Tree. We can see photos that we download and attach.

... is a quote from above...

but the system CURRENTLY 20151012, seems to create the FIRST tag.

So the HELP line across the just added photo should instead suggest the edit functions on the side be used to EDIT TAG ... instead of creating ANOTHER tag ...

    double click on the photo,
the functions on the right will appear,
    click on EDIT TAG.

then pull that created tag back to frame just the face of the person ...

If there is another person in the photo, double click,
copy from their details page (on a second tag opened to the family__)
past the name id #... then

ATTACH to the Family Tree by id number. ...

HINT: Find A Grave has some photos!!! Awesome find! (Plus children missing in family groups because they were born and passed between census years ... without death info ...)
