Film Ordering Innovations

I'm excited to have film ordering online. It will attract more users, but it will attract even more users if you let us click "order" from the film catalog. It is such a wonderful idea, I bet you are already working on it.
Also, it would be helpful if there was a tab to view the films available in your home fhc and even locate the closest fhc with the film you want.
I expect that the films most often ordered will be bumped higher on the list of the next to be digitized? Also, the catalog will have a view button instead of an order button for those that have been digitized, but an order button should still exist for those that prefer looking at the film, just put that button in a less obvious place.
This catalog system would be a great thing to include on a FamilySearch cell phone app.
Is this all being worked on? When will it happen?

  • Thank you for you comments about online film ordering. You have some good ideas. Some of the things that you suggested are already in play. When you try to order a film, if the film is already at the FHC that you use it will tell you so you don't need to order it. Also in the catalogue, if a film has been digitized and is available on line, either through historical records or another source you will be told and given a link to that digitized record. The engineers are continuing to upgrade and improve the Library Catalogue but there is no time limit as to when these things will occur.

Great ideas! We are currently working on placing an order button directly on the Catalog and we also want to have a feature on Online Film Ordering that allows you to view a map with flags on all the locations where a particular film resides. That way you can see if a film exists maybe 50 miles away and it makes more sense to visit a neighboring center rather than placing an order. That will be a feature deployed likely sometime next year.
