I’m confused and frustrated

Getting back to my name after looking at another on family tree

When I am looking at a name on my tree, I think it would be helpful to be able to click on something to go back to my name on my tree. I am copying information from my tree to my Ancestory tree (unfortunately only 4 generations copied over automatically). If that is possible I haven't been able to locate.

How about trying this. Right after you log in go to Tree and bring up your Tree. This will place it at the left of/in the tabs bar. Anything you open (in a NEW TAB) from the tree will show to the right of your Tree and so on. Then if you use Find Search etc it will continue to the right, and you can then, from one of those tabs, open in a new tab and it will follow that tab, to the right of that tab. Then you can always have the tab open for your tree.
    • Sharlene may not know how to open all links in a NEW TAB. So I will mention here to use Right-Click on any button or link, and then choose from the top of the drop-down options "Open in New Tab". Many times the Ctrl-Click will also open that link in a new tab (unless it first wants to display a pop-up window).

But Paul's suggestion below is easier to manage: "your name should be at the top of the Recents list".

If you have default settings your name should be at the top of the Recents list when you open Family Tree. Unless you have looked at over 50 people since opening the program you'll find your name by scrolling down the list. Alternatively, as suggested, open FT again in another tab and keep it there unused, with your name at the top, until you're ready to return to it.

  • I think you are saying that you want to import the information from the FamilySearch Tree from Ancestry for more than 4 generations? If you would like to do that, you will need to use a third party software such as Roots Magic (which is free). You can download the software and install it on your computer. Then import form the FamilySearch tree and make your own file, then export to Ancestry. In that way, you can add anyone you want to your Ancestry tree easily.

You can import more than 4 generations from FamilySearch into Ancestry. Just go to the end generation in Ancestry and on that person select 4 more generations from FamilySearch. I have done this regularly. You can build your Ancestry Tree from FamilySearch ... only 4 generations at a time, but you can continue to pull over 4 generations for each of your end of line in Ancestry.
