Have you considered having a "Return book" cart on the second floor for those of us who retrieve a book from the third floor?

  • This needs to be brought up to the Library staff on duty, not here.

    • No, if you were instructed to use feedback, then you are okay in posting this request.

Having visited the Family History Library, I'm a little surprised that books from one floor made it to a different floor.

I wonder, could you have left the books at the information desk for that floor or the service window for that floor?

I know that we are not supposed to refile the books we pull (at least that was the case when we were last in Salt Lake), so leaving them for refiling should also be a good solution.

      'G'Day' from "Down Under" ( Australia ).

I am sorry for the delay in mt response - different time zone.

Firstly, "Welcome" to this "FamilySearch" ( "GetStaisfaction" ) 'Feedback' Forum.

Secondly, "Official 'FamilySearch' Representatives", do monitor; and, sometimes, participate in, this Forum.

Thirdly, I am just another User/Patron, just like yourself (and, happen to be a Member of the Church).

Many Users/Patrons who regularly participate in this Forum who have a great deal of knowledge and experience with "FamilySearch", like to assist/help other Users/Patrons.

Finally, I believe that this Forum is a legitimate place to submit "Feedback" for the operations within the "Family History Library" (FHL) in "Temple Square" in "Salt Lake City"; and, also "Family History Centres" (FHCs) in general.

I just think that such "Feedback" for the "Family History Library" (FHL) in "Temple Square" in "Salt Lake City"; and, also "Family History Centres" (FHCs) in general, has not been very frequent and forthcoming in the Forum; and, just threw many participants in the forum for 'Six' (or, as you may relate to, 'a Curve Ball').

Plus, your post was a little too cryptic and lacking is substance for some; especially, those who have not been blessed to be able to visit the "Family History Library" (FHL) in "Temple Square" in "Salt Lake City".

Please try not to get upset and hurt by some of the responses that you receive in this Forum.

Please be aware that this Forum is a very "PUBLIC" (if not a little "Obscure), run by a "Third Party" under involvement with the Church and open to all, both, Members of the Church and non-members, most of whom are Users/Patrons of "Family Tree" (formerly, "New.FamilySearch") of "FamilySearch" of the Church.

You may consider that the responses that you received were 'hurtful', 'Yes' a little 'abrupt' for a first time participant in the Forum; but, believe me, they were not meant to be 'hurtful'.

I watched this Forum for a number of years before joining in; as, I did not like or appreciate some of the responses; eventually, I gained a 'thick skin'.

The posts in this forum have been predominantly about "Family Tree" (formerly "New.FamilySearch"); and, "FamilySearch" Records and Searching; and, "Indexing"; but, actually also cover many other aspects of "FamilySearch" - FamilySearch Centers (eg. FHL, FHCs, etc); Research Assistance; Serving in Family History; Research Courses; and, more.

Please do not be sad or disappointed; and, more importantly, do not hold back you suggestions with regard to any aspect of "FamilySearch".

Everyone's comments and suggestions are equally worth being expressed - we can and should all be heard - just do not for get that there will always be, both, the good; and, the not so good.

I truly hope that the suggestion of yours in this post of yours, is passed on by one of the "Official 'FamilySearch' Representatives", who monitors this Forum, to one of the appropriate Authorities of the "Family History Library" (FHL) in "Temple Square" in "Salt Lake City".

      Good luck.

      Keep those suggestion coming.

      Brett

ps: I would love to 'pick-up' the whole of "Temple" Square (including the FHL) and surrounds; and, 'plonk' them here "Down Under". 'No', scratch that, 'go the whole hog', make it the whole of Utah and surrounds.

  • I think a teensy little, tiny bit of context might be helpful if this poster provides it.

  • I’m hurt. It's not the topic that upsets me, it's the criticism for trying to be helpful.
Most US and Canada books are housed on the third floor of the FHL in Salt Lake City. Patrons go there to borrow a book and frequently take it to the second floor where they are working. After using the book, the patron goes back up to the third floor to put the book on a return cart to be reshelved. (We are asked not to reshelve the books ourselves.) . It might be helpful to have a book return cart somewhere on the second floor.

This discussion makes me sad and I will not make any more suggestions. I'd intended to be helpful, not to be set up for criticism.

I'm curious. Is there a better way to make a suggestion? I was told at the library that the feedback tab is the proper place to do this, but apparently I was misinformed. (Perhaps the wonderful Missionaries at the Library should be told that this is not the way to make a suggestion.)
    • Try contacting the Family History Library Director's assistant: 801-240-3485
(I was given this number by the Director last year to respond to another Get Satisfaction thread.)

Not only should she be able to take your suggestions about carts for reshelving, she may be able to provide you with a more direct email or form for Salt Lake library specific communication.

      I hope this helps you.

  • That is very helpful. Thank you.

I appreciate your pleasant and helpful suggestion after the abrupt and hurtful answers from others, There should be more people like you.

Evidently those who have used the SLC facility realised what you were talking about. However I had no idea which second and third floor in which building in which country were being referred to, let alone that it was the library in Salt Lake City. After all there are other genealogy facilities operated by the LDS which are spread over several floors.
