Is Recordseek not able to get a familysearch connection?

Earlier today, I was cranking away, attaching sources via Recordseek to Familysearch. (Don't get me started on the 20 minute timeout - it's frustrating)

Anyway, I noticed that Recordseek couldn't get a connection to FamilySearch, and it was manifested by not showing it connecting to FamilySearch, and then again when you put in a FSID# to go to the final screen, and it wouldn't go past that FSID entry screen.

Anybody else notice problems with RecordSeek and FamilySearch? (I've submitted a problem report to RecordSeek already, but wanted to check here as well.)

I'm spoiled, and love it! I just dread doing it the "FamilySearch way". LOL

I continued to have problems with RecordSeek and started checking some of the extensions that I have enabled on my firefox browser for privacy and security, and discovered that PrivacyBadger (put out by the EFF) was causing the problem.

Reading further on how PrivacyBadger works, it automatically learns about new trackers that pop up, and automatically blocks them if it discovers them being used on 3+ sites.

I've sent an email to the developer to ask what trackers he's using, but since reporting this problem 10 days ago (and a different one before that), I haven't received a single response from him.

I have long had some questions about RecordSeek, as it seems to receive records of where you surf once installed. It's a very useful tool, but I'd like more transparency about how this tool works and what info is being gathered on me, whether our privacy is being monetized, with info being sold to other sites.

I suppose once Jan 1 comes around, I can request that info, per our state law, and request that it be deleted for me, with a requirement that the functionality cannot be diminished for my wanting to not be tracked.

  • I have attached several "RecordSeek" sources this week with no problem . . . using Firefox . . . but not PrivacyBadger . . . could be valid data for RecordSeek to know in general terms from what web sites sources are being attached from . . . and whether to FamilySearch or Ancestry . . . would not particularly concern me.

  • I worked with EFF today (creators of PrivacyBadger, and the recordseek pop-up screen where it hangs had to be worked around, and backed up a step.

So what I did, was to let RecordSeek get to the screen where it lets you pick from familysearch or Ancestry.

(You'll notice there's no browser toolbar in there, where I would usually see my different icons in the toolbar.)

I copy/pasted that window's URL into another new firefox tab, this way the full address bar and toolbar would be available when I clicked on FamilySearch.

The next screen showed up with the bouncing rotating box and stayed there, hung. (I can't show you right now, because I have a current session via recordseek that lets me through.)

I clicked on the privacybadger icon

You'll notice the number 2 next to it. That says there are potentially 2 trackers on that recordseek page.

I click that icon and I get a window that appears showing me the items it saw.

(I colored in where the api.familysearch.org slider was, and what it looked like. (red) and then pushed it to green to allow it to work.)
    • BTW, I am a HAPPY CAMPER now! (I *DO* love this tool!) Having had to do it the normal way these last 10 days via familysearch was AGONIZINGLY SLOW and TEDIOUS!

(they really ought to fix that, and allow FSID number entries to attach more people, rather than force you to go to each person, then Source->Add Source from Source box, then click the paper clip.)

I think I and others have asked for that previously.

  • Here's the other recordseek-to-familysearch login screen. I had to make some changes to this as well, although it worked enough to get me past this screen earlier and get me to the busy screen where authentication was hanging up.
