Library Catalogue place search inadequate

You asked for Feedback on the new "beta" search facility for the Library Catalogue.

By the way, I wasn't sure what category to use for 'feedback' as I'm not exactly giving praise, nor asking a question or reporting a problem. Nonetheless, I chose "share an idea."

I use the current FHL Catalogue almost daily so will definitely come back and try out the beta site more but my initial comment is that the "place" search is inadequate. There is only one box provided - you don't know if you're entering a county, town/city, state, province or country! For example, "Ottawa" could be a county in Michigan or city in Ontario (and probably other locations as well). I use the current feature which allows you to narrow by indicating 'part of' so that you get the results you are looking for immediately.

I am sure I'll have more to share later -- will keep trying it out! Thanks for asking.

  • Great input... we would all like to see this feature. I see the company has acknowledged this problem...

  • I’m frustrated
I too use the Catalogue daily for international collections and am trying to develop a search technique which will replicate the readily accessible current format. If I find It I will share it but for now the current search does not work for me unless very simple searches. Some thought needs to be given to 300 film upwards collection for a place name as the current search and result display is ineffectual and confused.
To replicate issues choose any catholic diocese and try to locate a parish church record within that diocese. I'd suggest that this works rapidly in the existing Catalogue and identifies evenst and years. I'd suggest that in most cases the beta search you will find many sources but not the film, event and years you want.
Or choose a querter and year for a civil registration collection and try to locate the films for it.
I will be interested to hear of progress to improve this and would welcome a tutorial or document to enable users to adapt to a new search format.

  • I’m wanting FHL catalog results
Agree there is no guidance for how to submit a location for FHL Catalog search. If I type in "Marion County, West Virginia," the results page loads for 20 minutes with no search results. If you want users to use gedcom format (omitting geopolitical identifiers such as city, Town, County) it would be helpful to say so giving a few examples.
