May 4th Update to FamilySearch.org

On Friday April 27th FamilySearch released a new version of the website and search tools. This release provides one of the top patron requests, the power to filter search results by collection, event date and places, and gender.

In analyzing patron feedback over the last few days we have identified two specific issues that appear to be the cause of many patron complaints. An issue in the data prevented many of the records and collections from being searched (results that were returned Wednesday were just not returned on Thursday). We also identified issues that generated "Unable To Display Results" errors. Both of these were unrelated to the new filtering feature and have been fixed in an updated release we made yesterday.

Based on patron feedback, we also moved the previously available collection filter tool to the top of all the other filters and renamed it to make it clear that you can filter your results by "Collection."

Thanks for adjustments but is a new problem searching.

In first search I entered parents' full names, did not specify place, specified date range, specified target person's surname same as father's. Got one result (death record of son) and many non-relevant other items.

Repeated search, changed nothing in search form but deleted target person's surname (hoping to find death record of married daughter, surname unknown). Got ~no~ results at all -- not the son's death record or the many non-relevant items that were listed afterward in the same search.

  • I’m seeing problems
The search engine is now unstable. Displays old search-target in header of results after I have deleted that target person's name, added parents for new parents and did search. Still got old target name in header of results, but then search engine said it could not display results. This occurred also after I clicked to clear form. Went back to main search form page (using the FS logo at upper left), put in the same data as in my previous search attempt (names of parents; location) and tried search again. Again search engine said it could not display results.

    Good luck fixing this.

I appreciate the effort being put into the updates for Family Search. I also understand it takes time to get used to change and for adjustments to be made, especially given the magnitude of the changes. you have made. For this reason, I hesitate to complain. It has always been clear to me that Family Search provides access to information that cannot be found anywhere else and that you go to great lengths to provide service to all who want to use it.

I am not a programmer, but it seems to me that your most recent updates have made your program unstable and that it is yet to be fixed. I am not convinced the new filters will be a problem once the instability is worked out. I think you are aware of the issues by now. It is hard to spend hours trying to find records that were available before your updates. It is also hard to have to make repeated efforts to search knowing any moment you will get an "unable to display results" message. I know you can access the oldest sites, but I haven't found the site program as it was immediately before the changes April 27. That is what I would most like to access. Thank you!
