More visible link needed to FamilySearch Research Wiki on FamilySearch.org

The FamilySearch Research Wiki needs more, not less, visibility. Removing a link to the Wiki from the Learn page on FamilySearch.org is a step in the wrong direction. In addition, the wording description on the Learn page is deficient.

  • here, here. Also, here is an alternative description

The Research Wiki is an encyclopedia of family history methodology–how and where to look for genealogical data. It is written for the community, by the community, meaning it is free to all, and is written and edited by any family history enthusiast who wants to participate. The [insert an automatic counter] Research Wiki articles are valuable resources for anyone who wants to learn more about researching their family history.

Agreed. Worse still, from a user perspective, this page is completely useless. It's pretty, but doesn't allow me to DO or FIND anything. Bring the most important information on the page to the top. Shorten the descriptions of wiki, research courses and forum, and include search boxes so that users can take action.

How about "Research Wiki - an encyclopedia of family history methodology, how and where to look for information about your family" or maybe even just "Research Wiki - an encyclopedia of research information,"

  • I am a little confused. Do you not like the link to the wiki on the learn page. It seems to me two clicks from the front page is not too much to get to the wiki main page. On the main wiki page you can search for whatever information you want. I am not sure from your comments what you would like to see. If I am confused, I am guessing the developers also do not understand what you would like to see.

Clicks should be value-add, not barriers. A first time user who chooses the Learn option may never make it beyond the "get started now" button. If they're looking at the Learn page from a laptop, they won't even know the wiki, research courses, and forum exist.

Grocery stores put the highest value items at eye level for good reason.

Gerry McGovern would agree, I think: https://vimeo.com/album/1694052/video/...

  • I think the biggest thing here is that the majority of the real estate on the screen is geared towards one big box that applies to the "getting started in genealogy" visitor. Because it's so big, the three sections under that get lost, relegated to afterthoughts, and don't seem very useful, simply because of their placement on the screen. You really have to know what you're looking for in order to find it.
    • Janell, you are quite right about the poor use of real estate. All that wasted space above the huge useless purple box. The link within it should ~say~ that it is a link to instructional videos which can be played but not downloaded. Many of us cannot view them (being on dialup or shaky wifi) at all, and it's a frustrating waste of time to wait 20 minutes for it to load -- just to find out what it is. There should also be a link to a text-outline beginning instructional programme with the same content as the videos, and with links to pertinent general-genealogy articles both to the Wiki and to some quite helpful external resources.
