New Person Details Page - Request

I read every post and I try to track all the goods and bads that users run into.

I know this new page has caused a lot of concern and some nice enhancements like timeline and map views. It is really difficult to sort through all the responses when there are duplicate responses pasted into multiple threads.

I'm requesting that we help each other, remain civil and feel free to post your concerns, once. Thanks

  • Joe, would it be better to have one big topic for all the bugs and problems people encounter, or separate threads for each problem?

  • separate threads work best that way people can comment on that aspect without it getting lost. I know, that's a lot of threads. However, if you do a run down of the issues that's fine with me too.

Until "FamilySearch" has time to digest the so many NEGATIVE responses, please revert the "Production" ( "Live" ) Environment BACK to the time BEFORE the new look design format of the "Person / Details" page / screen was implemented a number of HOURS ago.

DON'T GO BACK! The problems are normal when something new is introduced into the mix, however, I hope we continue to go forward and just let FS developers fix the suggested problems or suggestions. I really like the new look and feel.

I agree with you on most things ...

    But ...

Sorry, not on this matter ...

    YES ...

    GO BACK ...

It is not that I do not like the direction that new design format of the "Person / Details" page / screen is heading ...

    But ...

The new look design format of the "Person/Details" page/screen was NOT ready for the "Production ( "Live" ) Environment; and, should have never been released "Live" WITHOUT forewarning - at least a reasonable period of notice to give Consultants time to check it out in the "Beta" ( "Test" ) Environment and teach/train others.

It is not that people do not like change.

Many regular Users / Patrons who participate in the ( "GetSatisfaction" ) 'Feedback' Forum had informed you ( ie. "FamilySearch" ) that there were problems/issues in the "Beta" ( "Test" ) Environment that need addressing before the new look format went "Live"; and, you have NOT fixed/addressed those problems/issues!!!???

And, that is even before all the "New" problems / issues that have come to light.

    SO ...

Please REVERT back to the previous format of "Family Tree" before the new look format took effect a few hours ago.

    'Thank You' in advance.

I have never seen so many NEGATIVE reactions ( ie. Posts ) in relation to an update / release ( ie. the new design format of the "Person / Details" page / screen ) in the ( "GetSatisfaction" ) 'Feedback' Forum in such a short time!!!???

Hopefully this update / release was a mistake / oversight.

  • It's been in BETA for probably more than a month and many people have been testing it and making suggestions and comments. Sorry but I like it!
    • Ah! Found it! (I've been wanting to respond to this comment since I first read it last night, but couldn't remember which of the gazillion complaint threads it was on.)

Yes, the new interface was in Beta for a while, but because it was in Beta, it was impossible to tell what was intentional, what was incomplete, and what was a bug. It had all sorts of problems, but all of the ones I remember were entirely different from the ones we are seeing in the production version. For example: when I last looked at the Beta site, I don't remember Sources being segregated like this; if they had been, I would have complained, vociferously. I also remember that the main problem with Sources was that the Edit function was broken: it refused to save. The current fatal flaw, the inability to copy and paste source text, was not apparent on the Beta version (last I checked, anyway).

The new interface is Not Ready. It is impossible to use effectively, and several major aspects of it need to be re-thought and rebuilt from first principles, because they break fundamental user interface conventions and expectations.

This change needs to be reverted ASAP, so that the past two days of misery can become a distant nightmare, and the programmers can go attend some remedial classes in user interface design.

The only improvement I really see in this new layout is the addition of the timeline tab. It's not something I'll ever use, but I can see how it might be attractive to some kinds of users.

However, literally every other change I've come across has been a hinderance that will increase the likelihood of me making errors and reduce the likelihood of others finding and correcting those errors.

I would gladly give up the timeline view to revert back to the previous interface. Then perhaps introduce these changes incrementally, with more opportunities for feedback and revisions before they're pushed live.

'Yes' you are correct ... "It's been in BETA for probably more than a month and many people have been testing it and making suggestions and comments."

I am not saying that I do not like the direction that new design format of the "Person / Details" page / screen was heading.

I am just saying that the new look design format of the "Person / Details" page / screen was NOT ready for the "Production ( "Live" ) Environment at this stage.

There were still TOO many problems / issues with the new look design format of the "Person / Details" page / screen that had been raised in the "Beta" ( "Test" ) Environment that have NOT been addressed / fixed.

And, that is even before all the "New" problems / issues that have come to light since the implementation ( WITHOUT Notice ) in "Production ( "Live" ) Environment.

    Testing and Functionality were INCOMPLETE.

  • I’m sad about the smaller font sizes.
    2
New Person / Details / Vitals window - please increase the font size of the Location fields to equal the font size of the Date fields.

I am sure that the younger crowd is not having any issue with multiple font sizes, but as an older person I now have to lean in to the screen to read the Location field content. This is causing eye strain that I could do without. Thank you for considering this implovement.

My comments about change management come to the fore here. I have previously warned Familysearch that poor change management would come and bit them in the backside, and here we have hundreds of posts' worth of evidence of that very fact.

You MUST improve your change management workflow. Promote the beta site when big changes are on there for testing. Warn before a big release like this comes out so people aren't surprised when it happens: for example for me it occurred in the middle of sorting out an entry, completely out of the blue. Write release notes for something this big.

That won't stop all of the hyperventilating and comments that people just HATE the new change with no reasoning for HATING it. What it will hopefully do is provide a rationale behind design decisions and an opportunity for people to feel that their beta feedback has been taken into account. It will also reduce the shock factor, which is another amplification of the disliking change simply because it is change.

There are many legitimate grievances amongst these posts. You need to urgently address these bugs and problems.

  • Burial shown before death on the timeline! True, the burial has a full date and the death just the year, but this is still bad programming.

My plea, soon after the revised version appeared in Beta, was that there should be no rush to move it into the production live version. I suppose it was inevitable there had to be a deadline to get it "live", but it needed to be tested intensely in Beta, which obviously has not been the case.

  • Well, as a Beta tester for 3 of the other products that utilize FamilySearch - this was a disaster! There was no reason to change syntax on the record file location, however I should point out I only capture the FSID number and not the hyperlink that apparently most people have done.

In relation to the presentation layer - that is a disaster! 99% of all comments have been negative. I've seen only 2 people praise the new layout - that means the change FAILED in respect to usability.

The timeline feature is a nice to have, but not necessary since everyone has a genealogy software program that already has that feature?

Focus on the glitches in the current web interface and screen refreshes when merging a record to a person or the capability of updating data changes during the matching process.

Your priorities are out of order/focus.

  • Separate threads — one issue per thread — always work best for everyone, especially the engineers who are working to fix the problems.

This thread is not about problems you’re encountering, but posting one issue per thread and then working toward a solution and/or work around or “how to” process the needs to be used.

I’m on the road and as such, working only with my iPad, so I don’t have any way to see any given issue or I would offer some solutions.

    • As a CIO and a former Marine all I am hearing is deflection and no one addressing/accepting responsibility of the issues that appeared from the unannounced changes to the user environment.
    • Regardless of how the issue are related, Joe is asking for just one issue per thread. That was his request.

He is absolutely correct in asking that. Don't obfuscate the issue by bringing up other issues, please.

One and only one issue per thread. Not "the unannounced changes," which are obvious.
