I’m worried others won't think to check films for stuff not allowed online.

No Extractable records view able for all.

when ever they church have some and some records not viewable it would be great if they have a very friendly reminder that some things might have extra on flim.

Just for clarification, is there a specific situation you can point me to?

  • Tommy it is really hard to say for many reasons. What I am suggestng is that you just a friendly reminder for us, just in case. I worry if when records are online that some thing is missed or their could have more information on films. the hints have helped some. In my humble thoughts as a researcher their is some times I felt the info on the image and on film has been better than what has been on line. One little sentence could fix this. all you would have to say is this their coud more info on the orginal copy of the film. I am asking this due to how we only index certain things, and I worry about stuff on film being lost forever.

  • S.,
I have passed this on to our engineers. In the meantime, I would like to reply to some of the points/concerns that you have brought up:

You are exactly right in that there is usually more helpful information on the original image than what has been indexed. Our hope is that patrons do exactly as you are doing, and going back to the original image. Our purpose and goal in indexing these records is to make the image searchable. This is part of the reason why we index only a few fields vs. typing everything that is on the document (indexing vs. extracting). The idea is if we capture just a few key fields (like a name and a birth date for example), a patron will be able to search for that criteria and find the original image, thus making many many more records available much quicker. It would take a great deal of time more to extract (type all the information) the same amount of records.

Also, as to your concern about losing what is on film, we share this same concern. This is precisely why we are digitizing these records. Not only that, but once they are digitized, we are able to store it in multiple, very safe locations. If somehow we did lose those records in a given location, we would have it backed up somewhere else. Hopefully that can bring some peace of mind to us all.

If I get any feedback from the engineers in regards to your suggestion, I will keep you posted. We know that the original image may have other helpful information, but there are probably many new patrons who haven’t yet learned this, and I think that’s a great point that you’ve brought up. It would be great to help them learn this.

Thank you S. for all your work and help here.

FS has many 'sources' available as "Indexed Information" and cited similar to this:
"England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1... : 30 December 2014), Thos. Weekes, 06 Apr 1742; citing Cowfold, Sussex, England, reference item 1; FHL microfilm 1,041,578."

While it does provide a link, it is to the index, which IS helpful, BUT, it would be INCREDIBLY more helpful to also include the link to the actual microfilmed record.

While it is 'relatively easy' to find that record from the microfilm number (which are often available online to view digitally), I believe many patrons may not be aware of how to do this.

It would seem a computer algorithm could easily identify FHL microfilm 1,041,578. with a link to https://familysearch.org/search/catal... or to the actual film itself, even better link to the actual page.
