    Transcription Error...
On 1900 Federal census for Rabun County, Georgia, page 83, line 44, there is a transcription error. The name of Joseph Brooks' mother-in-law was misread as Anna A. Daily when it should have been Vina A. Daily.

  • I’m frustrated for those who search in vain
    Re:United States Census, 1900 > Alabama > Autauga > 0001 Precinct 1 Prattville (part) Prattville town > Image 3 of 42
Previously the battered, torn, taped but accurate (as a census goes) page of this 1900 census was easily located on the Beta FamilySearch when searching Nancy McCrary (my example). I made a copy of the census. I had already made a copy of this same census back in 2007 off of Ancestry.com.

I pointed out to Ancestry's tech support via e-mail that they had removed the original digital shot of the battered census page which had the correct names and replaced it with a handwritten (recently rewritten - not at time of census) substitution by one of their employees using the incorrect transcription.

As soon as I did that, I see that now the incorrect rewritten page of census is what is located ONLY when the son, Tom is used in the search, not his mother, Nancy McCrary because she is now listed as Francis in this rewrite.

The Mc Crary family has three errors now with this newly transcribed, handwritten version.

    Francis should be Nancy
    Austine should be Antoine
    Hed should be Ned

Fortunately, the others in that family, Ethel, Tom and Gordon are correct.

I just realized that the first name on the census is rewritten as Ed, Pearl and Ragill Brickman. It was not until I collaborated with the distant relative about Nancy (Jane Singletary) McCrary's family that I realized that the wife of the family listed at the top of the page is her daughter, (Henrietta Nannette) Pearl (McCrary) Buckner, not Brickman, born 14 December 1877.

This means that two families are listed incorrectly due to the poor transcription and rewrite of this census page. This is going to cause a lot of searchers problems.

If we are to avoid duplication, get correct information (as close as possible) no matter where we are in the world accessing this information, then a gross error like this needs to be attended to right away to end erroneous information from being propigated.

PLEASE, either repost the original battered copy, with search associations corrected or have someone rewrite the census substitute using the correct names I have given for those I know. This is causing erroneous information to be distributed. I've already had a common researcher try to tell me that the head of family is Francis because she is seeing the associated incorrectly transcribed rewritten census page here.

I have attached a clip of the top part of this census page, both versions, to make the obvious differences clear to understand how bad an error this is.

    Respectfully yours,

    Marilyn Howard

  • I was checking the 1905 NYC census. On page 4 of 21 on the right side bottom, 1905 Kings, Brooklyn, Census, AD 21, ED 24, my Great Grandfather and several member of his family are listed. The proper name is "Riffelmacher" and I understand it was hard to read. That is not the way it transcribed but I hope it can be corrected. The other thing I noticed is that the names have not been transcribed properly because the census taker listed the last name, then the "Middle Initial" and then the first name so the listings all start with the middle initial. I hope this can also be corrected. Example. My GGrandfather's name is John C. Riffelmacher, but is being shown as C. John Riffelmacher. Then my attention was drawn to the way the rest of the names were listed on this page and possibly the rest of the census. Hopefully it is not too late to get these records corrected.

Please let me know what I might be able to do to help. I didn't look through all the pages but there are evidently only 21 pages in this 1905 census so it should be easy to check out. It would seem to me that this would seem odd to someone if they were checking it to notice that all these people's names probably don't start with an initial, but I know that indexing is very hard. I don't mean to sound critical, but hope this can be corrected. I was really excited to see this census. Thank you for you help. Darlene Hubbard. I can be emailed at momluv@sbcglobal.net.

Hi, this transcription has been changed on your search site. The forename was originally transcribed as "James" but suddenly it appeared to change to "Thomas" as follows:
    Name Thos. Swan
    Gender Male
    Event type Christening
    Christening date 21 Sep 1789
    Christening place Disley, Cheshire, England
    Father name John Swan
    Mother name Martha Swan
    Image number 564
    Digital GS number 4011847
    Film number 1655666
I have looked at the parish register and although the document is poor, the name is very definitely James - spelt "Jams" with the "s" as superscript.
It is a very unusual thing to have happened and quite worrying that an entry which was accurate has been changed to one that is inaccurate.
Please could you explain to me how this happened and whether it is a one-off problem or is it a common occurrence?

What can be done about extraction errors? I know of two errors that affect people I knew. For example on the Ellis Island records my grandmother Herta Strew came through with her brother and mother. Simple errors can crop up like her name was transcribed HERTHA. Could there be a way for us to catch and suggest corrections to work that has already been extracted or indexed?

    Ohio Deaths 1908-1953

    JOHN DAVID EVANS
    DIED JANUARY 11, 1938

John was born in 1934, NOT 1937. Can someone please fix this? Thanks!

Make that 39 people who have had this problem. It would be nice to be able to browse the census (I'm looking at the 1905 NY State). That way perhaps I could solve the problem myself by going forward or back a page.

  • Correct the spelling of "Montreal" in the index where it is now
    * Quebec, Catholic Parish Registers, 1621-1900
    * Montréal
    * Notre-Dame-de-Montréall
The spelling in the parish record volume is "Montreal" not "Montrreall".
By correcting this, all volumes for Notre Dame Church will be in one place.

  • I’m a little bummed.
mis-labled images: I started reading the images from the Catholic Church in Mexico and found that the 9 records for the pueblo Villa Ahumada, CH, "Matrimonios 1874-1876" for the Church Santa Maria Magdalena are actually from San Fernando in Carrizal. Thank you.

  • Hello.
Have just visited this page on your records at your Wiki site (1850 US Fed Census for a Thomas family in Union County of Indiana). By the way, this wiki is a very nice addition to the Family Search site.
However, there is an error in the transcription at this page: api.familysearch.org/records/pal:/MM9.1.r/MWY4-VC2/p_209229083
The man transcribed as 'John Homer' should be 'John Thomas'--per image. The wife and children are listed as Thomases, but for some reason Head of Household seems to be mistake.
Thanx again for the expanded data and the census images. --CJH

  • These errors are found on many places. I had tried to manage some of them but was unable to do it. I saw the solution on this site and was really useful.
