Please give better source information

Please give clearer source information and not unexplained numbers referencing microfilm rolls or indexing projects. If you can provide those numbers in one database and have another containing details of what sources those numbers represent, then you can join the two together to display that information in the one report. This would be so much more user-friendly.

As an example - a christening record doesn't even detail which church the christening was held at or whether the record was transcribed directly from the registers (primary source) or from bishops transcripts (secondary source). If you look up the film number in the catalogue all that information and much more is actually known.

Take Film number - 1702220 - We learn that the church was St. Alkmund's, the details were transcribed from microfilm of original registers which was held at the Shropshire Record Office. It gives catalogue references for the Shropshire record office and other relevant detail. There is no reason for this information not to appear on the record page itself alongside the names and dates.

Technical: If speed and server load is a consideration then the information might be requested via a 'More info' link on the record page, perhaps using AJAX so that all the information appears in-line with the record so that everything can be printed together. Technically this should be fairly simple addition that would improve the site immensely for family history researchers.

  • Since NFS is designed to reduce duplication of temple work, it is essential to know the geographical place and date associated with extractions and work already done. I find it very difficult to know if a person listed from these sources is the same as my ancestor (needing to be combined), and therefore, the work has already been done. Batch, film and other info listed as sources for extractions and temple records are useless to most people.
