Simplify finding a person by ID

When finding a person by ID there is no need to show a list of possible matches. The ID is ether valid or not. If valid there will only be one person in the list. it should take you to that person's page. A simple way to make Family Search easier to use. Thanks.

Firstly, "Welcome" to this "FamilySearch" ( "GetStaisfaction" ) 'Feedback' Forum.

Secondly, "Official 'FamilySearch' Representatives", do monitor; and, sometimes, participate in, this Forum.

Thirdly, I am just another User/Patron, just like yourself (and, happen to be a Member of the Church).

Many Users/Patrons who regularly participate in this Forum who have a great deal of knowledge and experience with "FamilySearch", like to assist/help other Users/Patrons, like yourself.

Finally, your post is intriguing to me; as, if I recall, I have only been presented with ONE single individual/person and "FamilySearch Person Identifier" (PID), certainly not multiple individuals/persons with different "FamilySearch Person Identifiers" (PIDs).

Can you post a URL as an example of what you are referring to.

There are two possibilities that I can envisage; but, even then, I have never seen it.

The first is if there are a number of "Alternate Names" for an individual/person with the same PID.

The second is if "Deleted" / "Removed" individuals/persons with different PIDs that were "Merged" / "Combined" with the particular PID that you were "Finding" with, are included in the list.

    Just curious.

The person ID is a unique identifier for a person record. Finding a person by ID will only give you one person record. Even after you merge two people the ID for the person record that is deleted is not reused. You can see this by finding a deleted person by ID and you will get the old person information with a big banner showing that is person was deleted. Hope this helps with your curiosity.

I agree this is a worthwhile idea. Hope you don't mind if I add some clarifying illustrations and discussion for Brett and others.

    Here is the current workflow:

    1) Go to Find By ID and enter the ID number:

    2) Upon clicking Find, there are only three possible types of responses that I am aware of:

    3) Click on the individual's name to open the summary card then click in the summary card to go to the desired view of the individual.

Ron's proposal is that if the result is valid, as in the first one above, to skip steps 2 and 3 and go directly to the individual's detail page, saving the time needed to look to the individual's name, move the mouse pointer over, click, find the right spot on the summary card, and click again.

This would make the Find By ID box function just like the Go To box under Recents:

One could then argue that one can just use the Recents menu. However, the Find sub-menu is available on every single FamilySearch page under the Family Tree menu:

whereas Recents is only available when in Family Tree itself.

Since the vast majority of the time one is typing in or copying and pasting in a known valid ID with the intent of jumping directly to the detail page of a known person, shortening this process as Ron proposes would save a lot of time cumulatively and also just make this particular work flow in the program smoother.

The only reason that I am not so keen on the suggested enhancement of 'Ron' is that what if the incorrect Person Identifer" ( PID ) is entered.

I know that we now have the "Copy PID" facility/function, great.

    But ...

Firstly, NOT all PIDs that are entered are done through/using the "Copy PID" facility/function, some a still entered character by character.

Secondly, 'Yes', the "Copy PID" facility/function negates a lot of mistakes; but, what if the wrong PID is selected and copied.

I would still prefer the in-between process, as a back-up, to check what was initially entered, was actually intended.

    Just my thoughts.

Amen! I have very frequently grumbled at the whole Find by ID process: three extra steps instead of just taking you to the effing person's page already. IDs are randomly assigned (or consecutively, which comes to much the same thing), so it's not like you ever need to look for profiles with IDs that start the same way or end the same way or whatever -- and anyway, if you entered only a partial ID, Find by ID would just complain that it's invalid.

Really what we want is the same "go to ID" as found at the top of Recents, but in a location that's accessible from other places on FS.

In regard to the "Find" process, 'Yes', great for the Experienced User/Patron like yourself and myself; and, others; but, not so good for the Inexperienced / Novice User/Patron.

I know that I am taking the matter to the extreme with my "Reply".

But, the system needs to be designed for all, not just Experienced User/Patron.

I do not disagree with you in regard your suggestion of a "Go to PID" as found at the top of "Recents"; but, in a location that is accessible from other places in "FamilySearch".
